DOUBLE BAY WATCH A REGULAR NEWSLETTER OF THE DOUBLE BAY MEN S BOWLING CLUB Vol. 4 No. 3, March, 2007 EDITOR: MIKE GOLLAND PICTURE BY EDDIE FINGRET $5000 to children s hospital DOUBLE Bay Bowling Club continued its support for local charities and community causes when a $5000 cheque was presented to the Sydney Children s Hospital, Randwick, recently. This brings the club s support of the Children s Hospital to almost $10,000 in the past three years. In addition the club has raised, through various functions and contributions, nearly $50,000 towards the Help Chloe Appeal, which went to cover some of the expenses required for Chloe, the (now) four-year-old daughter of club member, Hylton Bloch, and granddaughter of another member, Len Simon, to undergo overseas specialised stem cell treatment following her drowning accident at a Sydney swimming pool in December, 2005 The $5000 cheque was presented to Rebecca Hurst, (above centre) the Sydney Children s Hospital s Special Co-ordinator Fund Raising, on Wednesday, January 24, by men s bowling club president, Rob Hutchins and women s club president, Barbara Shotland. 2 Ken Shapiro makes a quick mark on and off the green NEW FACE ON THE MEN S BOWLS COMMITTEE Ken Shapiro (pictured) was one of two new faces elected to the men s bowling club management at the 64 th annual meeting in October. It was a meteoric rise for a member who only joined the club less than 12 months earlier, but those who know him and are acquainted with his record in sports administration, were not surprised. And the ability Ken has shown in his first season at lawn bowling has not stunned those with whom he has played sport in his youth, teens, middle age and now in retirement! In his first Double Bay club event he proved his potential when he won the B-Division of the 2006 Handicap Singles title, then he was teamed with Sam Abrahams to win the 2006 Drawn Pairs title. Ken was born in the Sydney suburb of Arncliffe in 1938 and attended Canterbury Boy's High School to Intermediate Certificate level. His early work experience was as an architectural draughtsman in the aluminium window industry - a trade he followed for many years before going into a number of his own businesses ventures. He is married to Cathy (in 1964) and they have two sons, Wayne and Greg, who have since presented them with five grandchildren, Wayne s two boys and Greg s two girls and one boy. Since the day he realised that walking could be turned into running, he has shown a sporting ability with an interest in more than a couple of codes. 3 KEN SHAPIRO PLAYER AND ADMINISTRATOR FROM PREVIOUS PAGE KEN SHAPIRO has represented NSW Maccabi at Interstate Sports Carnivals since 1956 in tennis, basketball, cricket, badminton and tenpin bowling. He also represented Australia in tenpin bowling at the European Maccabi Games in Antwerp FLASH BACK TO 1958/59 when Ken Shapiro (front right - number 27 shirt)) represented NSW Maccabi basketball at the Interstate Carnival in Brisbane. In the centre (front) is current Double Bay BC chairman, John Rosen (11). (1983) and at Maccabiah in Israel (1993), where he won a gold medal in the teams event. Then there have been his numerous club and open championship medals, such as the Australian Jewish Open Tenpin Bowling Championships in Ken s thoroughness in sports administration was to the fore when he worked tirelessly for 15 years as a committee member of NSW Maccabi Tenpin Bowling Club, including three years as president. His years of service to the tenpin club was acknowledged when he was honoured with Life Membership. At the 2005 Maccabiah Games he headed the Australian tenpin contingent as manager and only last year he put aside his lawn bowls for a tenpin ball and returned to the lanes as a member of the Australian team at the inaugural Maccabi Australian International Games (MAIG) in Sydney. Ken retired from the work force in January, 2005, after owning and managing retail furniture stores for the previous 20 years. Before joining Double Bay he was a long-time member of Kogarah Golf Club and his name is on the boards of that club for winning the C-grade Foursomes Championship 1960 and B-grade Seniors Championship 2002 and in So having encapsulated Ken Shapiro s sporting and organisational ability, there is little doubt that he will be a plus point for the club, both on and off the green. 4 Some facts and figures about the Double Bay Website Club is a hit with local and overseas browsers MORE than 500 people from America logged on to the Double Bay Bowling Club website in January. And another 200- or-more hits have come from computers housed in Europe, Asia and Africa. breakdown by Continent. North America recorded 505 hits, Europe 103, Asia 39 and Africa 14 The breakdown of Asia countries includes India 9 hits, Hong Kong 8, Singapore 7, South Korea 5, Malaysia 4, then there s Egypt 4, Oman 2, Saudi Arabia 1, Indonesia 1, China 1. Japan 1, America 490 and Canada 15. The local hit list now amounts to tens of thousands a far cry from January 2006 when the site went into operation In January 2006 we had 436 visitors to the site and in January 2007 there were In January 2006 we had 8834 hits (a hit is a request to our web server for a file such as one of our web pages) whereas in January 2007 we had 35,897 hits It is interesting that the busy times for the website are Monday night and Tuesday morning, where members are looking for the results of the Monday competition and reading Hot Off The Press, which gives all the latest results, news and views. Wednesday night and Thursday morning are even busier as the members are looking for the results of the Wednesday competition which has more players. From a personal point of view this is very satisfying, as it proves that our members are interested in what is going on in the club on the days we bowl. On Sunday nights we also get a lot of hits as members want to know about the matches that were played on Sunday morning, and obviously wanting to know who they are going to play in the next round. In February this year, the website had 207 file downloads, that is the number of people who downloaded the club newsletter Baywatch. This is surprising, as the newsletter is usually picked up at the club. Maybe people from other clubs are reading our great newsletter? It was also interesting to learn where these hits were coming from and here is a BY EDDIE FINGRET WEBMASTER One of the reasons for these figures could be some of our members on holiday logging in to find out what is happening. Well, I guess that is what it is there for. The Bandwidth report showed that in January 2006 we sent out 227 MB whereas in January 2007 we sent out MB, that is the number of bytes transferred by our web server to visitors to our site. The most popular Operating System used to access our site was Windows XP followed by Windows We still have people out there using Windows 98 and would you believe we have four people who are still using Windows 95 (I bet Bill Gates will be happy with those folks). Hopefully in 2007 more content can be added to the website such as the weekly Pennant results and maybe have a facility where you can book in for a game on bowling days. It would also be more resourceful if the website includes a link as to last minute decisions about weather conditions and the likelihood of play or no play on the day. It would save a lot of phone calls! If you have any ideas for the website I would love to hear from you. 4
IAN COHEN S UMPIRE UPDATE NEW LAWS OF THE GAME What to do if a bowl is damaged IF a bowl is damaged during the course of play the umpire should decide if a replacement bowl is needed. If it has been struck by another bowl during the course of play and splits into pieces, the end should be declared dead and the damaged bowl should be replaced by another bowl from the same set. However, if a bowl played splits open at rest not having been struck it shall be replaced by a bowl from the same set and the game continued. Law 49 states that if the damaged bowl cannot be replaced by another bowl from the same set, all bowls of the damaged set should be replaced with bowls from a different set.. In the past there has been some doubt as to whether a bowl should be declared dead when it comes to rest or when attention has been drawn to its position at a later stage, even though further bowls have been played. This situation is now clearly covered by Law 27.3 which reads: "The skips or opponents in singles should decide whether a bowl is dead or not. as soon as they noted it is necessary (if the players do not realise that a decision is necessary as soon as the bowl comes to rest, the decision can now be made even if a number of bowls have been played after the bowl in question came to rest). If they cannot reach agreement the umpire should be called to make a decision." Law 30.1 states inter alia If a jack is moved by a bowl in play it is a dead jack if it comes to rest at a distance of less than 20 metres as measured in a straight line from the mat line. Previously it was 18 metres. *Ian Cohen is a former Chairman of the club s Umpires Committee Men s and women s clubs support local causes FROM FRONT PAGE The cheque presentation was made before only a handful of members because the regular Wednesday intra-club matches, which attracts almost 100 players, were postponed due to inclement weather and rain-affected greens. The decision to call off the games was made too late to suggest to the Children s Hospital that the contribution be made at a later date, Rob Hutchins said. The $5000 was made up of $1163 collected by the men s Wrong Bias box, $1395 from the Rod Davies-organised men s Century Club and $1963 raised by the women s club s annual Charity Day, plus a contribution from the registered club funds of $479. Rob Hutchins emphasised that the $1160 from the Wrong Bias collection, did not represent the standard of bowling by the men s club. He pointed out that the minimum contribution for playing a bowl with the wrong bias is $1, but the majority of culprits recognise the importance of the appeal and make far more generous contributions. Ms Hurst said that in 2006 the Children s Hospital cared for 157 new patients, mostly suffering from the most common cancer diagnosis Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia (ALL), which requires a two-treatment plan period. 5
Another new face in the kitchen MEET Ewa (pronounced Eva) Smitt, who is now serving the afternoon teas on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. She is being assisted for a short period by Lorraine McLaughlin, who retired this time last year after almost 26 years as chief cook and bottle washer at Rose Bay and Double Bay clubs. The current caterers, Ron Jones, who took over from Ray Hitter during September last year, will continue to supply the menu, but its representative, Melanie Goodfellow, has been replaced by Ewa, who is now a casual employee of the club. Polish-born, Ewa says she has been in Australia a long time and is looking forward to her responsibilities at Double Bay. Lorraine knows every inch of the kitchen and the club, so it will be fine, she said. Sam Brick again leads team to Wednesday intra-club top spot THE consistent Sam Brick led his team of Harry Jacobs and Ivor Cohen to another Blue Division Midweek Intra-Club championship when they took out the Spring edition by tallying 18 points and a + 83 aggregate. They finished ahead of Fred Ginsberg, Len Simon and Pepe Glick (14 pts +63), while the Rod Davies, Les Ferguson and Eddie Fingret team was joined by Brian Grill, Jack A. Stern and James Cook dropping to the Orange Division.. Promoted to the Blue Division were Orange Division winners Carol Engelman, David Carroll and Julian Engelman (14 points +69) along with runners-up Kevin Sheridan, John Rosen and Rob Fetherston (14 pts +62). The Phil Gordon Snr, Gerry Cardash and John Volanakis team finished at the tail of the division and will now play in the Red section. Topping the Red Division was the combination of Peter Goldman, Max Pazaky and Bernard Fridman (16 points +96), but this team has disbanded, allowing the second placed unit of Arthur Horwitz, Harry Scott and Eddie Cohen (14 pts +44) to gain promotion to the Orange section.
ALL SMILES AT BONDI James Wall Shield winners (from left) Pam Stein, Barbara Shotland, Ros Garden and Jenny Walton Picture by Eddie Fingret Women win Wall Shield DOUBLE Bay s Women s Club team of Pam Stein, Barbara Shotland, Ros Garden and Jenny Welton won the Eastern Suburbs Division of the James Wall Shield at the Bondi Club on February 2, defeating Randwick by 19-shots Earlier, the team qualified for the final with a one-shot (19-18) result against Matraville. The club just failed to make it an all-double Bay final when the combination of Flora Cohen, Helen Bloom, Audrey Weinberg and Alma Goldman lost its semifinal to Randwick FOOTNOTE: Double Bay Women s Club also won the James Wall Shield in 2002 Players say no to 13-man Pennant teams MEMBERS registered a resounding no vote to the proposal for 13 man 2007 Pennant teams. Chairman of selectors, Werner Kos, and the majority of his panel wanted to name 13-man teams for each pennant grade with a roster system when leads and seconds would take the responsibility as side manager on a rotating system. Kos stopped the poll of 93 members after he had canvassed 51 votes, of which 31 were against the proposal and 20 were in favour. A disappointed Kos said that even if all the remaining 42 votes were in favour of the scheme, it would have failed to reach the 75% (65 votes) he considered a workable majority. It was a scheme of great initiative, rich in potential, but shot down in flames, for the time being, Kos added. Orion Cruises offers special deals for members FULL DETAILS ON OUR WEBSITE 7
AFFABLE member, Sam (call me Shmuel) Abrahams (pictured), is the postmaster at Rose Bay North, says that being behind the counter has it moments. like when a regular carefully placed a large parcel at his window with a row of stamps already affixed to the address of a relative in South Africa. Sam, according to protocol, weighed the package and told the customer: "This package is too heavy, you'll need another stamp," to which the man replied, "And that should make it lighter?!" THEY say you re are never too old to learn and that must be one of our most revered member s principles. John Davis (pictured left), now nearing his 101 st year, last week purchased a lap top computer and is already sending and receiving s. He and his constant companion, Karina, happily holidaying in Cairns, are going to take computer lessons, John would appreciate it very much if members put him into their address book at johngdavis@bigpond.com, but not sure if he s up to receiving the X-rated ones! THERE S Barefoot Bowls, now there s Shakespeare on the Green Waverton Bowling Club is the venue for the presentation of Shakespeare on the Green, performed by a professional, non-profit theatre company, which aims to bring The Bard outdoors on Friday and Saturday nights, along with food and wine all for $15 a head? Well the first offering was Twelfth Night. But they could have chosen a more appropriate play for the bowling club s patrons such as Measure for Measure, All's Well That Ends Well, or A Comedy of Errors, while the wife suggests Much Ado About Nothing would be the perfect presentation for us bowlers! DID you read the new page on our Website under the title "Webmaster s Ruminations, which included this gem? People think Pennants is a matter of life and death. I assure you, it's much more serious than that. WHATS going on around the club these past weeks? First Paul (Boof) Brandon starts growing a monster moustache (pictured right) and club administrator, James Cook, had an afternoon with the dye bottle and finished up with a bristle of blonde hair (pictured left). Paul says that he is very proud of his fuzz but, like his friend, Jonathan Moses, (remember Jonathon s Chloe Appeal head shave?) is willing to have it cut off (at a price) for the club s next charity function. Not sure, if, how, or when James, will have a chairty hair colour change, but someone suggested it could be worth quite a few dollars, if he went for the club colours of maroon with a gold stripe down the middle! 8
