1 BRUSH PARK BOWLING CLUB NEWSLETTER JULY/AUGUST 2016 Editor's note In view of the recent AGM and relevant activities by our Presidents and other Club Officials I have included in this newsletter the Men's and Women's Presidents' reports which were part of the Sixtieth Annual Report. This is for the benefit of those members who receive the newsletter who were not able to attend the recent meetings at the club. PRESIDENT S REPORT 2015/2016 This year, I will begin by thanking on behalf of you all the members of the Management Committee. They all have made a contribution and have helped to oversee all aspects of Brush Park Men s. On behalf of the Committee I also thank the Board members for their support with our endeavours in and around the running of bowls. As with all bowling clubs, the main working office is that of the Secretary and here at Brush Park we are very fortunate indeed to have in that role Peter Murphy. He continues to work tirelessly to ensure what happens on the greens runs as smoothly as possible. His attention to detail is second to none. He has been ably supported over the year by Geoff Young and between them and their helpers, I believe we have one of the best run Offices in the zone. On behalf of all bowling members I thank them all for the time they put in. To our Major Sponsors for our Tournament/Special Days, Wayne and Teena Vaughan from McGraths, Hunt & Hunt and Tooheys, together with Brookers Brakes and Clutch and Happy 888 Restaurant who continue to support in a major way our numerous functions with the associated raffles, many thanks. My thanks also go to the group responsible for our greens here at Brush Park which includes Trevor Siviour (our Greens Liaison Officer) together with our green-keeping team led by Vince Maree for their time and efforts spent. We continue to see the improvements we were all hoping for in the playing surfaces. Many thanks also to Selectors, Umpires and Coaches for carrying out their duties. They all play their part in the running of a bowling club such as ours. This year Brush Park fielded four sides, 3s, 4s, 6s and 7s, in the Zone 10 Pennants competition, although unfortunately, once again we were unable to win a section. The best performed side was our 3s. We will now have to look to next year where we will hopefully have our efforts rewarded. We continue to have good numbers of bowlers on the greens for our social bowls days. From the many comments made by visiting bowlers, our numbers must be the envy of all within our Zone and you are all to be congratulated for your support. Our special Tournament days have all added to the busy bowling calendar and to all those involved in not only the organisation but in the participation, many thanks. Again this year the club was asked by the Zone to be the venue for the Zone Veterans and Super Veterans day and from the comments of both participants and Zone officials all enjoyed the successfully run event. Volunteers continue to be very important to the fabric and success of small clubs like ours. So it has been gratifying to see the results of the various subcommittees/ groups that have been formed over the last year or so. To the mowing (under Barry Goldsworthy), gardening (John Roddy and John Higgins), raffle (under Neville Sercombe, Joe Mazzaferro and Phil Roy), newsletter (John Arkins), flag officer (Lloyd Hoare and Barry Goldsworthy) teams, many thanks for all that you do in and around the club. Worthy of special mention with thanks are Glenn McDonald with his work on the new Honour Boards and Steve Walmsley with his continuing work with replacement/upgrade of all lighting within the club.

2 Our Wrong Bias Box collections and donations go to our current nominated charity Allowah Children s Hospital. In September last a presentation was made to their representative with a cheque covering the amount collected of $2,411. Well done to all. In November we again held the combined Men s and Ladies Presentation night with the evening being enjoyed by all present. The M.C. for the occasion was once again our own Greg Doherty, who handled the duties with ease. Many thanks, Greg. Thanks also to both Tony and Eileen Bromley who organised a very successful evening s raffle with a number of Christmas hampers being among the prizes. The social race days held at Gosford in October and May were thoroughly enjoyed by all of those who attended. The highlight for those selected on both occasions was being part of the mounting yard presentation ceremonies to the winning connections of the Brush Park Bowling Club named race. Thanks to both John Roddy and Barry Goldsworthy for organising these days. The social race day has now become a regular event within the calendar. In conclusion may I express my appreciation to all members for your ongoing support, especially those, that when approached, willingly gave of their time to ensure that the various tasks were completed. I am confident that this attitude will continue and will bring success to this your club both on and off the greens. Richard Summerhayes

5 Women's Club News PRESIDENT S REPORT As my term as President of Brush Park Women s Bowling Club comes to an end I would like this opportunity to thank Acting Chairman Trevor Gardiner, his Executive, Men s President Richard Summerhayes, his Committee and gentlemen of the Men s Club for the support and assistance given the Women s Club over the past year and beyond. The relationship and co-operation between the Men s and Women s Club will no doubt help for the continued success of our Club. In the year three sides were entered in the Pennant Competition, two sides in the 2 s and one side in the 4 s. One side in Grade 2 and Grade 4 won the District and progressed to the Regional play-offs, although both worthy competitors were not successful. Our Major fund raising Day held last August, sponsored by McGrath Real Estate was a great success, some 26 teams from around the District attended and enjoyed their day of bowls and the many prizes awarded to the winners and runners up. Major and Minor Championships also mixed days of Hunt & Hunt, Melbourne Cup, Australia Day, Anzac Day & Memorial Day and late last year Twilight held with the Men s Club proved to be a success and most enjoyable days. Our thanks to the organisers of the Club Diaries for the work that goes into the preparation of this very necessary book. Women s Club Championship Winners Major Singles Jenny Roddy, Minor Singles Elizabeth Bell, Pairs Jennifer Leek and Jan DeVries No results for Club Triples and Fours which commence in July and August. To my fantastic Committee who have worked and assisted me during my four years as President, my heartfelt thanks and appreciation, for without you all I would not have been able to carry out my duties as President, also to all my lady members my sincere thanks for your loyalty to our Women s Club. My thanks to all members of Brush Park Bowling Club, our Umpires, Coaches, Greenkeepers, Bar Staff, Restaurant-Catering Staff, Management & Office Staff I wish all good health, good bowling and continued success of Brush Park Bowling Club. 9 Dick Wilson This is an article which is well researched and written by Barry and Kerry Goldsworthy for your information. Whilst most Thursday bowlers are aware of Dick Wilson s background, I am forwarding this article to enlighten all members. Richard James Wilson was born on the 1 st July Dick was the second eldest of four children. As a schoolboy, Dick was a NSW athletic champion and developed into a talented rugby league player, who, by his ability to drop kick the ball, scored many team points by drop kicking try conversions, penalty shots for goal and field goals. During August 1942, at 18 years of age, Dick was called up in the Commonwealth Military Force, given an Army Number of N and sent to Bathurst in the 32 nd Infantry Training Battalion. On the 26 th May 1943, Dick was transferred to the AIF and given the Army Number of NX Below are details of Dick s Army Service (Note - how long the discharge took) and a photo of Dick taken in Borneo 1945 (Back row Ist on Left. Note - Japanese constructing an Air Strip in the background). In Queensland during 1944, Dick was enticed into an army Australian rules game. Prior to that, he had not played a game of Australian Rules. A former North Melbourne Aussie Rules player coached Dick in the game. In 1946, Jack McMurray, a Melbourne Australia Rules umpire, who had seen Dick play in an army game in Borneo, recommended him to the St George Aussie Rules Club. Dick gave a polished display as a rover in his first game for St George. St George beat South Sydney at Erskineville Oval 12-16(88) to 11-7 (73). Dick became one of the best players in Sydney and represented the State sixteen times. Twice in 1946, three times in 1947, four times in 1948, six times in 1949 and once in May 12 th 1998, Dick became a Life Member of 2/28 th Battalion. In 2008, a proposal was forwarded to NSW government nominating Dick as a NSW representative for Australian of the Year. In 2012, Dick became a Life Member of the Brush Park Bowling Club
