1 Halls Head Bowling & Recreation Club The Weekly Bias Newsletter Tuesday, 6th November 2018 Good morning everyone What a week that was!! Such a superb effort by everyone involved with the AP&ES Games. This was a wonderful honour for our club to be able to host such an event, so thank you to everyone who gave up their time. We appreciate you all so much. Just a few of our valued volunteers who made the photo on Saturday. Ladies & Men s Bowls Doug Myers, Men s Captain What a week we have just experienced! The Australasian Police and Emergency Services (AP&ES) carnival put the Halls Head Bowling Club s resources to the test and we came through with flying colours. It really made me feel proud to be involved in such a wonderful club and its members. As the dust was settling, we got involved in one of our premier events, the Harcourts Cup that was run on Sunday. We are extremely lucky that the club has such generous sponsors in Paul and Lisa Harris. This charming couple are truly great members of the Halls Head Bowling Club. It was a busy day and the event was eventually won by Keith Guelfi and Pauline Peirce and they walked away with a cool $1000 first prize. Graham and Kerry Steele worked hard all day and captured second prize while Linda and Richard Young came in third position. The first leg of the Men s Pairs Championship is scheduled for next Sunday 11 November Nominations for this event will close on Friday 9 November so get your names in if you want to participate. The last nominated team will be relegated to reserve status if numbers are uneven. The Novice and Veteran s Singles nomination sheet has been placed on the notice board so get your names in if you are eligible for these events. You should be over 70 years of age to play in the Veteran Championship. You need to have been bowling for less that two years to qualify for the Novice event.

2 Coaches Corner Some terms for the beginner to better understand the game of bowls. Back Bowl A bowl that comes to rest beyond the jack. Blocker A short bowl that blocks someone from reaching the target. Potato Bowl Sometimes called a pineapple amongst other names. When delivered it hops, skips and jumps. Up Shot A bowl that is delivered a little heavier than draw weight. A Drive A bowl that is delivered with force, something to leave for the experts. Draw Weight A bowl that is delivered with enough weight to reach the jack. A Toucher A bowl that hits the jack. These bowls are marked with chalk and remain alive even if they end up in the ditch. Dead Bowl A bowl that ends up in the ditch without touching the jack. A Wick Sometimes called a glide or straightener. Where the delivered bowl strikes another and continues without stopping. 5 ½ Yearly Club Meeting Please remember that we have our Club ½ Yearly Meeting on Monday, 12 th November at 7pm. Corporate Bowls Good luck to all our teams for corporate bowls this week. It s back and it s going to be great. Have fun everyone and if some of your members still have some energy, we always welcome volunteers to help out on a Wednesday night. It s also a great sign that Summer is Coming!!! To be the best club in the league both on and off the greens at all times.
