1 Congratulations The month of August was light on for winners this year. Members have enjoyed a couple of close Semi-Final games in the Men s and Women s CoCC Singles which were played at Yass late in July. Then again in the CoCC Pairs for the Women played at Canberra North early in August. A special mention and thanks to Pam Bishop for returning from Queensland to represent our club and play so brilliantly in an action packed Semi-Final against the ladies from Queanbeyan. Gayle and Pam went down by one shot on the last end after being down 6-15 at after 15 of 21 ends in the game. Queanbeyan went on to win the title this year. Harmer (WC), S. Lalor, R. Moore, K. James, L. Gillespie (QRSLM) Sports Day Once again we had visitors coming from all over the region to attend this year s Sports Day. The weather was exceptional. Cool to start but got better as the day wore on. Special thanks to the tireless workers behind the scene who put in a big effort to make sure the day was a hit with members and visitors alike. On the weekend 25 th and 26 th August the ACT Fours Championship for Women was held at our club. Once again our home team got defeated in the Semi-Final on Sunday morning. Thank you to all the members who contributed to ensuring that competitors enjoyed their visit and that the tournament ran smoothly. The eventual winners, from Weston Creek will now represent the ACT at Merimbula in December.

2 TEST YOUR KNOWLEDGE Q1. The lead in team A delivers the jack which passes the 2 metre mark. Before it comes to rest Skip A picks it up assuming that it will not reach the ditch and places it on the 2 metre mark. Skip B objects. What should happen now? A1. The jack has been displaced by a player of its own team therefore it must be re-delivered by the opposing lead who may reset the mat but must not play first. Q2. A player of team A is called on to put in a short blocker. Skip B believes that the bowl is too short and calls for the umpire. On measuring the umpire finds that the bowl is 14.1 metres away from the mat line. What is the position? A2. The bowl is a live bowl as it is not less than 14m from the mat line. Q3. A delivered bowl comes to rest on the green and in contact with the jack which is in the ditch. It is claimed that, as the bowl is a live bowl and is in contact with the jack in the ditch, it is a toucher. Is this correct? A3. No. No bowl shall be a toucher if it plays onto, or coming into contact with, the jack while the jack is in the ditch. Q4. A bowl comes to rest and then falls over and touches the jack whilst the next bowl is in course. The Skip moves forward to mark it as a toucher to which the opposing Skip objects. Is the bowl a toucher? A4. No. For the bowl to be a toucher it must touch the jack before the next bowl is delivered. Q5. A bowl, which had been a toucher in the previous end, is delivered with its chalk mark still on the bowl. It does not touch the jack but the chalk mark is not removed. As a result of play, several bowls later this bowl is forced into the ditch within the confines of the rink. What should happen? A5. If a player fails to remove a mark from a bowl before delivery and that bowl does not become a toucher, a member of the opposing team or the marker must remove the mark as

3 soon as the bowl comes to rest. A bowl is dead if, not being a toucher, it comes to rest in the ditch. Q6. A bowl finishes near the boundary line of the rink. Both Skips look at the bowl and allow play to continue. When the players change ends the thirds agree that the bowl is out of bounds. What is the position? A6. The thirds must refer the matter to the Skips. By looking at the bowl and allowing the game to continue the skips, being in charge of the teams, have indicated that they agree to the bowl being in play. The Skips will agree whether or not a bowl is dead. No member will remove any bowl prior to the agreement of the Skips. Once their attention is drawn to the matter, the Skips must make a decision. If they cannot reach agreement they must ask the umpire to make a decision. 4 Bugsy s Tech Notes This month is basically for those who are not entirely familiar with computing technology or it's terminology but has still ventured out to buy their first bit of tech that connects to them to the world as couple of members did recently. As there tends to be lots of computing terms drifting into everyday language that might be confusing to people just starting out. Like the Internet browser for instance, this is the engine that translates computer code into humanreadable documents. Browsers display web pages and each web page has a unique address called a URL. This stands for Uniform Resource Locator, "URL"s are the web browser addresses of internet pages and files. These are the things Google finds whenever you conduct a search. They may be listed at the bottom of business cards, on TV screens during commercial breaks or on just about every document related to business or government. Always shown in this format such as or google.com.au both would be able to be typed into the top window of a browser and it would find that web page. It is able to do this via another piece of technology that keeps a list of names which are called Domain's which delivers that web page to your screen. take credit card details with just a standard HTTP web page. Nor should you be dealing with them if they do. So it's something you should always check before putting in that type of personal information. The major difference between Tablets and desktop PC's is that tablets usually have an app (Software) for a specific function. That is tailored to the smaller screens and makes it much easier to navigate. Things like weather or news apps present the web pages tailored for your device. So if you find yourself doing something cumbersome and with repetition then usually there is an app for that with a tablet. On a PC most of these things are done via the web browser or with software for a specific purpose. Such as a word processor and the like, on a tablet it's the same but with slightly less functionality than a desktop pc or a laptop. Site this month is Yes it's our own ABC. As good as any around and constantly updated. It ranks in the top 300 domains in the world in terms of ranking. With data sourced from the Mozscape web index of 923 Billion domains and 5 Trillion pages. That's a pretty big world to explore. Greg Bourke (Bugsy) The important thing to know when giving your personal information on forms over the internet is the difference between HTTP and HTTPS HTTP is the acronym for "Hypertext Transfer Protocol," which displays standard web pages. When a web page has this prefix, the links, text, and pictures should work properly in your web browser. HTTPS is the acronym for "Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure." This indicates that the web page has a special layer of encryption added to hide your personal information and passwords from others. Whenever you log in to your online bank account or a shopping site that you enter credit card information into, look for "https" in the URL. This is an important difference as no commercial trading site worth its salt is going to

5 Bumper stickers for Seniors 1. Begin by standing on a comfortable surface, where you have plenty of room at each side. With a 2kg potato sack in each hand, extend your arms straight out from your sides and hold them there as long as you can. Try to reach a full minute, then relax. 2. Each day, you'll find that you can hold this position for just a bit longer. After a couple of weeks, move up to 5kg potato sacks. Then 25kg potato sacks and then eventually try to get to where you can lift a 50kg potato sack in each hand and hold your arms straight for more than a full minute (I'm at this level). 3. After you feel confident at that level, put a potato in each of the sacks. Worth a Try Just came across this exercise suggested for the over 40's to build muscle strength in the arms and shoulders.
