1 FROM THE PRESIDENT Welcome back to the new year of bowling. The weather has been too hot for bowling during most of January but we will soon be enjoying a full calendar of events. If you are on the Club list you would have received this information, but I would just like to reiterate the following words to ensure all members have a chance to read what was sent earlier this month. I am most pleased to be able to report that we have had an enormous December in terms of fundraising. The number of corporate bowlers we welcomed to the Club in the four weeks leading up to Christmas was well above anything we had seen in past years. On behalf of the Management Committee, I thank all involved. Our Club is very lucky to have so many willing to volunteer their time in this very busy season. The funds we raise over the Christmas period are vital to us continuing to maintain our greens to a good standard. It is a balancing act, as barefoot bowlers are not exactly compatible with championship standard greens. Our greenkeepers have deliberately let the grass grow a little longer over the past month to protect the surface. They will be working hard during January to renovate and prepare the greens for pennants, which start in early February for both men and women. Your Committee has been thinking of ways to ensure our continued viability. At the last meeting we discussed options to reduce our reliance on town water. The first step in this process is to undertake a feasibility study to identify options. These options will be presented to the AGM next October for discussion. A copy of the plan considered by the Committee can be found on the Club notice board. We will commence fundraising in the New Year focused on supporting this project. Our Club may be one of the smaller clubs in the ACT but we have enjoyed a very successful 2013 with a number of our members again achieving State selection, our Pennant Teams performing strongly, the Men s Triples team winning the ACT Champion of Club Champions, our ladies taking out the ACT Women s State Fours and the ACT Over 60 s Pairs, numerous local and district tournaments won by members of our Club, 2 of our members qualifying as Official Umpires, another member qualifying as a Club Coach, a female member becoming a State Selector, and more of our members entering into many of the Bowls ACT events. This trend is encouraging for the Club Committee to see that all the hours put in by our volunteers is producing positive outcomes. I am sure that 2014 will only be better for you all. David Kimber

Once again we enjoyed the company of teams from many other Clubs and a good time was had by all. The weather was great, with 2 games of 10 ends played before lunch and 1 game of 12 ends after. There was a lot of interest in the semi-final and final games with most non winning players staying to watch the battle for the prizes. The final game came down to a match between a home team and one from City. The onlookers weren t disappointed by the display of skill exhibited by the players. In the end the home team won out. J. Ogle, L. Waters, R. Moxon and D. Lindbeck had enough teamwork, skill, sportsmanship, and stamina to defeat the City team. 3 Eastlake Football Club Sponsor the Canberra Bowling Club s Christmas Carnival 27 th 30 th December Open Pairs winners Christmas Carnival 2013 The 2013 Christmas Carnival again saw great weather prevail. Players were in to the Club House before the heat each day. Players appreciated the lunch provided as most were famished by the 1.30 pm finish of games. All games were played in friendly, sportsmanlike manner with players coming from not only many local Clubs but as far afield as Nowra, Malua Bay, and Ulludulla. The Mixed Triples team of Margaret Henderson, Victor Pulling, and Barney Voveris was put together the day before the event to make up the numbers, and they went home with the money on the day. Well done. Overall our Club members came out on top. Thanks to Barry Freebody and his band of helpers for all the effort they put in to ensure the event ran smoothly. I believe they were a bit shy when they realised that they had taken the prize for the Open Triples on the last day. Well done guys. 4 Answer Next Issue December Issue s Solution Presentation Night is to be held on Friday 31 st January. There is to be twilight bowls, Men versus the Ladies for the Waters-Dengate Trophy, starting at 5.00 pm. Please add your name to the list on the notice board by 25 th January to assist with catering numbers. Prepayment is preferred, so see Helen Cody or one of the Committee members when putting your name down. The Grim Reaper came for me last night, and I beat him off with a vacuum cleaner. Talk about Dyson with death. I went to the cemetery yesterday to lay some flowers on a grave. As I was standing there I noticed 4 grave diggers walking about with a coffin, 3 hours later and they're still walking about with it. I thought to myself, they've lost the plot!! My daughter asked me for a pet spider for her birthday, so I went to our local pet shop and they were $70!!! Blow this, I thought, I can get one cheaper off the web. I was at an ATM yesterday when a little old lady asked if I could check her balance, so I pushed her over. I start a new job in Seoul next week. I thought it was a good Korea move. I was driving this morning when I saw a parked NRMA van. The driver was sobbing uncontrollably and looked very miserable. I thought to myself, that guy's heading for a breakdown. Statistically, 6 out of 7 dwarfs are not Happy. My neighbour knocked on my door at 2:30am this morning can you believe that, 2:30am?! Luckily for him I was still up playing my Bagpipes. Paddy says "Mick, I'm thinking of buying a Labrador. "Blow that" says Mick "have you seen how many of their owners go blind?" Non-smoking areas have now been extended to include all greens and the immediate areas around. Members are requested to smoke in the designated areas only and inform visitors of the rules. There are signs up indicating where smoking is permitted.

5 ACT EVENTS Congratulations Congratulations to Lois Waters and Julie Hancock for making the ACT representative side that played against Central Coast Zone (NSW) and to Barbara Winder for being the Team Manager on 18 th - 19 th January. The team played at the Golden Hind Women s Bowling Club, a little club in the Bateau Bay area. Lois position was Third to Margaret Bacchetto and their team was good enough to win 2 of their 3 games in very windy and challenging conditions. The weather was very hot and humid throughout the Challenge. Julie played Third to Sharon Harmer as her Skip and their Team was unlucky in some close games to only came away with 1 win out of their 3 games. Overall the ACT went very well but again only managed to win 1 of the 3 Tests. Lois played her usual excellent draw game with the occasional on-shot or conversion shot. Lois played so well during the Challenge that she was named Most valuable player for the ACT Team. Well done Lois. Where the ladies played had a synthetic surface and the Green was a player s dream, nothing like the artificial one at Weston Creek that we have all come to dread. Lois had no problems with kneeling to measure and the surface was soft underfoot and as close to real grass as you can get. Apparently all the local Clubs try to use this particular Green for their tournaments.

6 Before each game the Greenkeeper watered the surface or 5 mins and rotated the direction of play. This makes it run fast (15-16 secs), and as the game progresses the surface dries out and it slows down to about secs. It took our Team a little while to adjust to playing on such a lovely surface but adjust they did. Their undoing seems to have been the vastly different weather conditions. The humidity and heat not only affected their play but I believe that very few of the Team got any sleep as the nights were unbearably hot and sticky too. What a shame we don t have access to such facilities here in the ACT so that we all could have the chance to play on such lovely surfaces.
