LET US REMEMBER Gordon Robert Towson 14th November th May 2011 Men s Section We will host the District Fours on Saturday July 2 nd, there are four games in the morning starting at 9.00 a.m. and four games in the afternoon. This means our planned breakfast and Ladies v Men s Pennant trials will now be held on Sunday July 3 rd. Breakfast will start at 8.30 a.m. followed by round robin trials. The same format will apply to the upcoming trial Saturday June 11. Important, to help the selectors prepare for the day and to help with catering please put your name on the game sheets provided. A reminder about a few of the law changes early this year; Law 18.4 Giving the mat away : The winner of the toss of the coin has the option of keeping or giving the mat away in only the first end and any extra end. The winner of all following ends must keep the mat. Law Skips Duties : Skips between them to keep the scorecard and scoreboard where a scoreboard attendant is not available. Law Skips Duties : The skip cannot delegate the duty of keeping the card/scoreboard. Law Position of players at the head not controlling play : If they are members of the team in possession of the rink, behind the jack. If they are members of the team not in possession of the rink, they should stand behind the jack and away from the head. I guess everyone has heard rumours regarding one or two Clubs in the District going through hard times, a couple outside our District have closed their doors recently and it may well be true that more will follow. We certainly hope and pray that they are rumours and nothing more. President Don raised the subject at the last meeting of the Men s Section and spoke of the need to bring new members into our Club. Perhaps inviting a friend to dine with us on a Friday night might be a good start. You can be assured our guests will enjoy their meal and the company. It s well known that with the exception of our Chef, kitchen staff and Greenkeeper, all work in and around our Club is done by a handful of volunteers, as it has been since the Club was formed in the 50 s. Your support and patronage helps maintain their enthusiasm and in turn the health of our Club. We re doing well, let s all work to keep it that way. Cheers Bob. Ladies Section The ladies have been busy again this month with the usual away and at-home games. At the start of the month our visits to Scarborough and Caboolture were marred by wet weather however mid month we had enjoyable games at Narangba, Bongaree, Beachmere and of course our own Wander into Woodford Day. Our ladies also participated in other Club competitions with success. Well done to all ladies who competed in the Warman/Woodrow Trophy match, it was a great result. Four of our ladies also competed in the Solander Lake Ladies Major Minor Pairs and the Caboolture District Championship Pairs held at Bongaree with a win in the first round at Solander Lake and congratulations to Lorna and Ros for reaching the semi final of the District Pairs.
The finals of the Ladies Club Championship Singles and Pairs were also held this month and Lorna narrowly defeated Ros in a very competitive match and Lorna and Ros defeated Marg and Peteena in the Pairs. Both Lorna and Ros will now continue into the District Champion of Champions matches to be held later in the year. Congratulations to all ladies for reaching the finals. Two Pennants practice sessions have also been held with good results so keep up the good work ladies. The first digit is the number of zeros in the number. The second digit is the number of ones in the number, etc. For example, in the number 21200, there are 2 zeros, 1 one, 2 twos, 0 threes and 0 fours. Ans Q.2 Below you will find 10 well-known seven letter words, with only their endings remaining. Can you determine the words?...rem _...oct _...pso _...dma _...edo _...rre _...sfy _...ott _...hma _...dpa Ans. Theorem, concoct, calypso, grandma, torpedo, bizarre, satisfy, boycott, drachma, grandpa. I saw a sign at a petrol station. It said job vacancy. There was another sign below it that said self service. So I hired myself. Then I made myself the boss. I gave myself a raise. I paid myself. Then I quit. Right now I m having amnesia and deja-vu at the same time. I think I ve forgotten this before.
Open Triple Winners May 18 th - R.Sheedy s team from Caboolture Lakes
Open Triples Runnersup May 18 th - Bill Edward s team from Kilcoy Games for All There are a few Team spots available for the Mixed 3 Bowl Pairs played on the first Tuesday of each month. Anyone interested please place your name on the game sheets provided or contact Graham Jewell. If you don t have a full team it doesn t matter, we ll help make a team up for you. Saturday 14 th Margy Dahl and Shane Hipwell won the Jackpot Prize, it s now back to $50.00 for the next one on Saturday June 4 th. The coaching clinic run by Alan Thorpe and Mick Cherry on Saturday May 15 th was well worth while, their methods are simple, fun and effective. The next clinic will be held on Saturday July 10 starting at 9.30 a.m. and for those wanting to test their new found skills, it will be followed by a light lunch and bowls from around 1.00 p.m; all welcome. Thanks to Bill Warman and Bob Woodrow for their generous sponsorship of the Bill Warman/Bob Woodrow Trophy. The first round was won by Kilcoy with 5 shots up, the second played May 21 st was won by Woodford 46 shots to the good resulting in Woodford holding the Trophy for A great effort from everyone and a special thanks to Lewis, Nick, Tim and Darryl for backing up on the day after playing their Club pairs match. Congratulations to Tim and Darryl on their win in the pairs, a close match and a good one to watch. A team of four travelled to Dayboro on Sunday May 22 nd and won the day, each collecting a fairly substantial meat tray. Well done Nevill, Damien, Graeme and yours truly. Please don t forget the aforementioned Ladies v Men s Pennant Trials, the day will start with breakfast at 8.30 a.m., there will be a small fee to cover the cost. One very important date to note in your diary, June 19 th, Mapleton at home, register on the games sheet out now. We have a visit from the Gaythorne Services Club on June 26 th, welcome with Lunch and Bowls to follow, more about that later. Cheers, Bob
Open Triples Winners May 25 th - Graham Bleakley, Chris Derrick, George Cox
Open Triples Runnersup May 25 th - Cliff Mason s team from Caboolture Lakes Work Your Mind Q1 Exactly how many minutes is it before seven o'clock, if 40 minutes ago it was three times as many minutes past two o'clock? Q2 Practical Peter was asked to cut a 99 foot rope into three smaller, equal length ropes. However, as usual, Pete couldn't find his measuring tape so he guessed! When he finally did find his tape (it was under his hat), he discovered that the second piece of rope was twice as long as the first piece minus 35 feet. The third piece of rope was half the length of the first, plus 15 feet. How long were each of the pieces of rope? Two hunters are out in the woods when one of them collapses and stops breathing. The other pulls out his mobile phone and dials 000. He gasps: My friend is dead! What can I do? The operator says: Calm down I can help. First, let s make sure he s dead. Silence, then the sound of a gunshot. The hunter comes back on the line: Ok now what?
A man goes into a bar and says, I d like something tall, icy and full of gin. The barman turns and shouts in the kitchen, Oi, Tracey! Someone to see you! Q: Why do married women weigh more than single women? A: Single women come home, see what s in the fridge and then go to bed. Married women come home, see what s in bed and then go to the fridge.
Well done to all ladies for their bowling successes during the month.
