1 Advance Notice New Year s Eve Party Venue The Club Food 2 courses Band Live 8 pm 1 am Club Closes 2 am Cost - $25 per person Leave your name with Bar staff to ensure your place. June - Work Your Mind - The 8" pizza sells for $ 4.99 at my favorite pizza store. The store claims they have a great deal on the large 14" pizza, which is specially priced at $ What is the percent discount the store is offering? Answer 25% Solution:- The small pizza has a diameter of 8" and therefore an area proportional to 8 2. The large pizza has a diameter of 14" and therefore an area proportional to If the pizzas are priced in accordance with their areas, then Price of large pizza / Price of small pizza = (14 / 8) 2 = 3.06 so Price of large pizza = 3.06 x $4.99 = $ Thus, Discount on large pizza = [1 - (11.46 / 15.28)] x 100 = 25 %. NOTE WEDNESDAY JULY 7 th PUB DAY Due to rain the Pub Day scheduled for Wednesday June 30 th was postponed and will now take place on July 7 th. Men s Section On June 19 and 20 we hosted the District Singles Competition, weather was kind to us and all games were completed on schedule with great bowling by all competitors. The final was played between Ross Siegle, (Glasshouse) and Mark Ogarevc ( Bribie) Having played in the Final 3 years in a row not only was Ross sentimental favourite, his play in the preceding games possibly had him a short nose in front with the bookies. However, when shots were needed at the business end Mark Ogarevc lifted and won the day in a very tight match. Woodford was well represented by John Schiulaz, a nervy start but finished off with great bowls, unfortunately, just a little too late on the day. Our Club received a number of compliments over the weekend, many of the players commented on how well the green played, markers performed their duties professionally and the friendliness shown toward our visitors was well noted. Thanks to all who played their part and a special thanks to Alan Broomham who at very short notice gave up his day to act as Umpire on Saturday. We have three teams in the District Pairs, John Schiulaz and Barry Monks sides were eliminated in the first round. Paul West and James Schiulaz had a great win against last years Champion of Champions and previous District winners from Glasshouse, K. Turvey and T. Little. Paul and James were down 4-22 on the 14 th end, apparently their opponents suggested they were too far behind and had no chance so they should concede defeat. Paul told them they would have to play every end until he and James reached double figures. They went on to win They now move on to Round 3 to be played at Bongaree on July 3 rd.
2 Bowls Australia released their new Logo policy earlier this year and aside from outerwear (their words) all garments are now required to display the BA logo at BA sanctioned or controlled events i.e. pennants or above. I wonder if this means undies, singlets and bras. Does this mean anyone failing to register a shot by the end of a match could be had for copyright if hoisting their Bonds, Calvin Kleins or Berlei s. More detail will be provided as information comes to hand. Cheers Bob [Men s Secretary] Ladies Section Firstly BIG congratulations to Robyn for her composite teamʼs win in the Donnybrook Carnival. Ladies visits to Memorial and Glasshouse were most enjoyable. Just a little on Pennants. As you all know we have been upgraded to Division 3. This is a bit mystifying as we didnʼt win or come runners up in Division 4. It is a daunting prospect as there is no Division 2 so some teams who played in Division 2 last year will be relocated to Division 3, and we have several new bowlers. However our request to be put back to Division 4 has fallen on deaf ears and our failure to compete would incur suspension for next yearʼs Pennants competition. So girls we will have to bite the bullet and go for it! We are trying to use Pennants teams to play in the District events and Bob is organizing a game against the Menʼs Pennants team on Sunday July 25 th. Keep an eye open for details. Best wishes to Barb from all members. Happy Bowling, Terre Four bowlers Four bowlers were out on the Green practicing. As one of them was about to bowl at the 15th end, which was next to a busy road, they saw a funeral precession go by. Instead of bowling, the bowler removed his cap and placed it on his chest until the funeral had passed. At this point, the other three said, You know, that was the most touching thing I ve ever seen. And the bowler answers, Well, I was married to her for 15 years. It was the least I could do! ****UPCOMING EVENTS JULY*** Darts Tuesday Night Darts Every Tuesday 7.15 pm start Poker Australian Pro Poker Every Monday - Registration 6 pm start 7 pm. Coaches Corner Work Your Mind A farmer was asked how many chickens he had sold at market that day. His reply was I've had four customers today, and each bought half of my remaining chickens, plus a half chicken. The farmer sold all of his chickens at market that day. How many chickens did the farmer sell? Answer next month Club Championship Summary Ladies Singles Won by Lorna Smith Ladies Pairs Ongoing Mens Open Singles Won by Neville Hanna. Mens B Grade Singles Won by James Schiulaz Mens Pairs Won by John Schiulaz and Damien Leenen Men s Fours Won by Graham Bleakley, Noel Nell, Chris Derrick & George Cox. It has been a few months since I contributed to the News Letter, I have been rather busy with both Coaching and all must know by now, my appointment as Men s selector along with Gordon Towson. We had a very productive session with ALL the players who indicated their availability to represent the Club this forthcoming Pennant Season, a total of 24 names, I m sure that would be some kind of record for the past 10 years. What that indicates to me is the members now have a belief in themselves and their bowling ability, well done to all. The news on the Ladies side is not quite as encouraging, with their numbers being down this year and the possibility of them playing in the 3 rd Division, it looks like a tough ten weeks. One sometimes has to wonder what goes through the minds of Match Committee Members, when planning such events, anyway, what ever the outcome I know both the Ladies and the Men will give their all. What better time for me to remind our nominated Pennant Players what is involved in playing a game where the players are representing their Club at the highest level?
5 First and foremost is, of all the games played, Pennants is different in the fact that a team now consists of not four players, but eight players made up of two teams, there is no room for complacency or one of gamesman s ship (or should that be gameswomen ship?) Each team must give encouragement for the other and constantly be aware of the overall scores. After match team critique s is always recommended, this helps ALL team members know exactly how good or bad they played. One method of have found helpful is, at the completion of a game I grade my individual performance on a scale of 1-10, should my performance be lower than 5 then I will have a roll-up the next day to help sort out why my performance was so low, should my score be around 6-7, then I try to analyse why, taking into account such things as not felling well, got out of bed the wrong side, hang-over etc The above method works well and I recommend that you all try it, of course your Coaches are always available to assist you, we are still attending every Friday at 3.00pm or by appointment should you not be available at that time. Given the amount of Bowlers who have indicated that they are available there WILL be occasions when for no other reason than to give ALL members the chance to play a game someone will be either dropped from a team or be asked to go up or down a grade. It is important that should this happen to you and the reasons not explained by the Selectors then please approach us and enquire as to why. I know both Gordon and I are available to explain any of the changes we have made. To all who are Playing Pennants Good Luck, Good Bowling and always remember to have a PMA (Positive Mental Attitude) Teamwork Each member of the team has a role to enhance their team performance. Encourage and try to inject enthusiasm into each other s game, be aware of each other s role. Team members must be loyal and supportive towards the skip, and other team members throughout the game. If you are unhappy with your lot, do your best and after the game speak to the Chairman of Selectors. Any criticism should be nipped in the bud, otherwise the whole team morale will go down the drain. Tips Encourage each other, hand the bowl to the next player on the mat concentrate on what is happening on your rink, be part of the game at all times. Play the shot asked for without question, and to the best of your ability Do not anticipate the shot to play, stand behind the mat waiting for instructions If there is any doubt about the skip s instructions, ask to have them clarified, do not assume you know what is meant When you have been asked for to play a shot, visualize the path of the bowl as if there are no bowls in the head. Moments of motivation. No.1 I think it s the mark of a great player to be confident in tough situations - John McEnroe When a player faces a difficult situation, their mental and physical preparation should bring out the best in them. Any doubt will result in failure Confidence will improve their success rate Positive self-talk will improve a player s confidence and their belief in their competence. Confidence always says Yes, I can. Etiquette Tips - Friendly, sporting acts toward your team-mates and opponents are appreciated and reciprocated. Keep silent while others are delivering their bowls. Good Bowling, Barry Monk (Club Coach) Games for All It is great to see so many of our members getting involved in the District Competitions. As well as John in the Singles, we have three teams in the pairs and one in the fours. Our Club Champions will once again contest in the Champion of Champions Comp, venues and times will be posted on the board for those who are able to find the time to show support on the day. Well, the big news is we are 18 shots up for the first leg of the Woodford/Mapleton Challenge. The return match will be at Mapleton on the 24 th of October, please keep this date in mind, put it in your diary now and help bring the Trophy home.
6 The visit from The Downs Combined Services Club on Thursday June 24th was a great day. Apparently our visitors talked about our hospitality all the way home, especially the ladies. I think it had something to do with the free hugs and kisses doled out in copious numbers by our President. It was a good day and in no small measure brought about by Shaun s ability to get everyone relaxed and smiling. Everyone appreciated Margie s music, we literally had them dancing in the aisles. Two great days, thanks to everyone for their efforts, especially the ladies for the fantastic meal on Thursday and the great spread for Mapleton s visit on Sunday. Mens Pennants season starts on Saturday July 31st our first match is away to Donnybrook. We will be holding a practice session on Sunday July 25th. Starts at 8.00 a.m. with breakfast followed by bowls at around 9.00 a.m. Dates for the Diary are July 4, State of Origin, all welcome, the game starts at 1.00 p.m. Saturday July 10 Club Selected Whites. Saturday July 17 Railway Day, Starts at am., Saturday July 24 Club Selected Whites. Please get your name on the games sheet provided, they are there to help organise games for members and guests. If there are no names it may be seen as a lack of interest resulting in the game being called off.
