1 Village Green Bowls Club August 2008 Page 1 Fellow Bowlers: Message From The President Hopefully you and your loved ones had a good summer so far and hopefully the high temps have not broken your bank account. As you know the Lawn Bowls Club has been busy with tournaments, leagues and open bowling. Should you not have bowled so far please come and anyone of us will be happy to get you involved. Not everyone might know that the three tournaments of the year are determining the Club Champion. After two tournaments a number of bowlers are in the running and I m sure those bowlers look forward to the third and last tournament in September. The point system which we adapted for first, second, third and so on seems to be a fair and workable system. We just had another Board Meeting and here are a few of the items we discussed: Treasurer s Report, advertisement for our wonderful Club, repair of flood lights, future surface renewal/replacement of the bowling rink which will cost a substantial amount of money, community fair, etc. You might have heard that Earl Mulley was called to be a member of the Recreation Committee. To avoid any conflicts of interest he asked to be released from his duties on the Board. Del Scheid agreed to fill the vacant position. He will be directing leagues and tournaments with the help of Agnes. Earl will be providing all the assistance as needed during this transition and we are grateful to him for that. Mark your calendar on Saturday October 11, 2008; we ll be having a New Member picnic starting at 2:00 p.m. Please note sets of bowls, club patches and other accessories to bowling may be purchased from Jerry or Judy Brewer. President: Ross Sutherlin Secretary: Nancy Stryzinski Treasurer: Jerry Brewer League Play: Connie Weidert Del Scheid Publicity Dave Rider Spring Bowl Twenty-one members of the Village Green Bowls Club participated in the annual Spring bowl Tournament played on Saturday June 7. Initial play was a ten end single elimination round with eight winners continuing on for subsequent six end events. After some intense bowling we had two top notch bowlers, Bernie Slater and John Yeomans competing for the championship while Jack Board and Delbert Scheid competing for the consolation prize. In the consolation round Jack easily won over Del with a 10-4 victory. A much closer match between Bernie and John ended with a one point victory for Bernie to capture the championship. It is important that all club members keep us informed of their current address as this is the easiest and quickest way to get information to our members and to remind them of new information on the website. Mixed Pair League The Mixed Pairs League of 2008 is composed of 10 teams playing one 16 end game a month over a period of nine months. After five rounds, the standings are as follows: John Yeomans/Claudia Knudsen - 5 wins, 0 losses (1.000) Howard Davis/Sue O'Neill - 4 wins, 1 loss (.800) Guenter Scharnowski/Connie Weidert - 3 wins, 1 loss (.750) Evelyn/Lyle Wheatcroft - 2 wins, 3 losses (.400) Barbara/Earl Mulley - 2 wins, 3 losses (.400) Bonnie/Dave Rider - 2 wins, 3 losses (.400) Sharon/Jack Board - 2 wins, 3 losses (.400) Darlene/Bernie Slater - 2 wins, 3 losses (.400) Carole/Ken Wilson - 1 win, 3 losses (.250) Agnes/Del Scheid - 1 win, 4 losses (.200) The Wilsons and Scharnowski/Weidert 5th round match has not been played as of this date. 5 Village Green Bowls Club August 2008 Page 5 Summer League I The Village Green Bowls Club finished the first of three lawn bowling Summer Leagues in June. The final event was a playoff between the first and second place teams from each of the Morning and Evening Divisions. First place was taken by the Morning Division Bears (Agnes Scheid, Dave Rider, and Earl Mulley) over the Evening Division Lions (Evelyn Wheatcroft, Glenda Sutherlin, and John McKittrick) with a 15 to 13 victory in twelve ends. Third place was captured by the Evening Division Cowboys (Sandy Welter, Jack Board, and Ross Sutherlin) over the Morning Division Patriots (Bonnie Rider, Dud Lytle, and Guenter Scharnowski) 10 to 9. Both matches were decided in the last end of play, making an exciting end of this summer's first league. Summer League I Winners The Bears Earl Mulley, Agnes Scheid and Dave Rider Summer League II Summer League II was played during the hot month of July with both Morning and Evening Divisions playing. However due to unforeseen circumstances the Morning Division had to be cut short and there was no playoff between the Morning and Evening Divisions. In the Morning Division the champs were the Patriots (Claudia Knudsen and Charles Lewis). Morning Division Second Place went to the Saints (Sue O Neill and Dave Rider) while there was a tie for Third Place between the Chargers (Jean Lewis and Bernie Slater) and the Bears (Darlene Slater and Howard Davis). The Evening Division First Place winners were the Cowboys (Evelyn Wheatcroft, Del Scheid and Earl Mulley). Second Place went to the Broncos (Agnes Scheid, Judy Brewer and Jack Board) while Third Place went to the Falcons (Sandy Welter, Roger White and Lyle Wheatcroft)

7 Village Green Bowls Club August 2008 Page 7 Summer League III Summer League III consisted of four teams playing in an Evening Division as there were no sign-ups for the Morning Division. After three weeks of spirited play the Lions (Judy Brewer, Del Scheid and Earl Mulley) and the Falcons (Sally McKittrick, Jerry Brewer and Guenter Scharnowski) were tied with 6 match points each. In accordance with League Play Rules, the tie-breaker was total game points which gave the Lions the victory by just one point, 37 to 36. Third place went to the Broncos (Betty Zimmerman, John McKittrick and Frank Monaco). Summer League III Winners The Lions Earl Mulley, Judy Brewer and Del Scheid Fall League Starting on Tuesday September 9 at 7:30 PM will be the start of Fall League Play. The length of this League will be determined by the number of members signing up to play with a maximum of eight teams for a seven week league. You can sign up now at the clubhouse or contact Del Scheid at or Connie Weidert at Arkansas Open The Arkansas Open Tournament will be played on Saturday September 13 starting at 8:30 AM. This is the third of the three tournaments used to determine the 2008 Club Champion so be sure to participate. Sign up now!

8 Village Green Bowls Club August 2008 Page 8 Rules and Etiquette The Situation - The Vice Skip goes to the Head with his/her Lead without playing his/her last bowl. The two Skips roll their first shots and the Skip discovers that his Vice Skip's bowl is still there. Is the Vice Skip allowed to come back and play his unplayed bowl? The United States Lawn Bowl Assn. rule is - No, he is not, if both Skips have bowled at least once. If the error is discovered before both Skips have bowled, the forgetful Vice Skip may return to the mat and roll his forgotten bowl. So, while it is your turn, make sure you use all of your bowls. For Skips, check the bowls to make sure that none of your team mates' bowls is in the bunch by the mat before you bowl. This is a rare occurence, but, at our ages, not unheard of. New Member Picnic We are planning on a fun day of bowling followed by a pot-luck picnic at the Green on Saturday October 11 starting at 2:00 PM to honor our new members for Mark your calendars now and come join the fun. HSV Community Fair The Village Green Bowls Club will once again participate in the annual HSV Community Fair held at the Coronado Center on Wednesday September 24 from 10:00 til 3:00. We will have a table set up and manned to inform any interested visitors of our club and the sport of lawn bowling. Drop by and say hi if you will be attending.
