Excitement plus for men and women at Invitation Triples By Mike Golland and Carole Brickman DOUBLE Bay Men s Club members are as excited as are the Women s Club membership about this week s $8000 Invitation Triples event which has attracted some of Australia s best female bowlers. The tournament, the fifth since its inception in 2003, will be decided over two days, Saturday, August 30 and Sunday, August 31, which means that the greens will be out of bounds for the male members, but there is plenty of room for spectators. However, there will be a strong contingent from the men s club, which has offered to assist in the administration and control of the event as a support for the women s club s organising committee, headed by Carole Brickman with Barbara Shotland, Margo Michael, Jenny Welton and Lea Portrate. And there is a call for both men s and women s club members to volunteer to complete the 101 little tasks which need attention starting on the Friday of the weekend. The importance of the event has been emphasised by the fact that several of the club s Zone representatives have made themselves unavailable for a match against Zone 10 at the Ryde RSL BC on Sunday, August 31, because they have specialised responsibilities at Double Bay. Club director, Leon Portrate, has the responsibility of arranging the umpire s panel for the weekend, while club administer, James Cook, will among other duties, ensure the score board displays up-to-the minute results and the club s IT exponents, Les Lilian and Eddie Fingret, have the task of collating all the details for instant display on the club s computer network and website. Early indications were that the event would be the most successful yet. This was indicated by the fact that when the invitations were circulated in February, the entry list was filled within three week. The line up of top name players about to grace the greens of Double Bay is so exciting, and all members of Double Bay should delight in seeing some wonderful delivery styles as well as the tactics, which require a temperament able to cope with a tough schedule of seven 12-end games over the two days. A great many of the players are Australian or State representatives with the major attractions sure to be the trio of up-and-coming 18-year-old Kelsey Cottrell (Noosa WBC) leading for the 21-year-old 2007 Junior World Champion, Melanie Macaulay (Cabramatta WBC), and skip Claire Duke, 24, (St Johns Park WBC) the 2005 Australian World Cup representative and last year s Tri Nations winner, who won the Queensland Open Singles a Kelsey Cottrell few weeks ago and was runner-up as skip in the triples to Karen Murphy s team which included Macaulay. Organisers are thrilled that Cottrell is competing in the event, because she will sit for the Queensland equivalent of HSC at the end of this year, but was willing to sacrificing a full weekend of study to come to Sydney. And there could be a bonus if she finds time to address the players and spectators at one of the scheduled breaks in play.. Continued next page 2

TOURNAMENT SPONSORS Arthur Bailey Surgico Pty. Ltd. Kelsey s time out from bowls time out to play Double Bay tournament From previous page SEEN as the shooting star of Australian bowls Double Bay Kelsey Cottrell, a few months ago, called a temporary time out on her international career. Bowling Club After careful consideration, the now 18-year-old is in conjunction with in the midst of a six month break from the national Bradfield & Prichard squad as she completes her final year of high school Real Estate, on the Sunshine Coast. While the decision was not Double Bay Women's made lightly, the World Bowling Club. Championship silver medallist, who claimed the New South Wales and Queensland opens last year, believes her concentration should be solely focused on completing her Queensland Certificate of Education in November. It s been a hard decision, but it s only for six months, Cottrell was recently quoted. It s my final year of high school and I ve got my whole life to play bowls, so I want to give it my best shot and when it s all over and done with I ll be Cheryl Gillard able to play as much bowls as I like, she said. Another team likely to attract plenty of attention is the three Australian representatives from the Merrylands Women s Bowling Club skipped by ex-fiji international Willow Fong. Betty Herbertson Fong, who has won two gold and three bronze Australian medals, to add to her nine gold, five silver and seven bronze won when representing Fiji, will have Cheryl Gillard as her lead and Betty Herbertson as the second. Gillard represented Australia in 2003 and in the 2006 Australian Super League collecting three gold medals, one silver and a bronze. Herbertson represented Australia in 1993 and She won the Australian Pairs in 1991 and has held a number of Victorian state titles. Australian Open Pairs gold medallist, Arleen Jeffery (Merrylands), will skip the team of Elizabeth Lochte and Janine Stockham. Leading players from Double Bay Women s Club will be among the challenging teams, including the combination of Marie Thatcher, Barbara Shotland and Pam Stein. Former member, Leila Levy, now living in Melbourne and a Victorian representative, will skip a grouping of top Double Bay players, Karen Levinson and Iris Kampel, while two other Double Bay members, Mary Newin and Sandra Ballard will play for Jan Watson from the Matraville WBC. The $8,000 prize distribution is $2700 (winners) and $2100 (runners-up). Third-placed will take out $1500 with $600 (4th), $450 (5th) and $300 (6th). Now all that is required is good weather! 5 CHAIRMAN S PROMISE: Members to be involved in club s future plans THE club s board of management has received a report from its taskforce committee which has been investigating and planning the club s future development, chairman, John Rosen, told the membership last week. Speaking to the men s and women s club members Rosen said that the board is aware of the responsibility that it has to provide for the club s future well-being and its continuing viability and sustainability as well as its direction of going forward. It has for some time been investigating through one of our board members [Alan Rosenberg] and a sub-committee [Barbara Shotland, Fred Ginsberg, Carole Brickman and Michael Beaumont] a plan that has now been presented to the the board, Rosen said This is currently being pursued and there are many aspects and questions that have yet to be resolved, but please rest assured that the board is doing all in its power to address the complexities placed before it. At all times we will inform the membership of its progress. When a final decision has been reached all members will be invited to a meeting to discuss the future of our club, Rosen added. THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 25 DINNER & SHOW NIGHT with star entertainer JOEY FIMMANO SUNDAY, OCTOBER 19 ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING By James! Veranda painting complete THE painting of the club house exterior was completed early this month when the Craig James Painting Service put the finishing brush strokes to the veranda floor and steps. A pennant lawn bowler, Craig James, who operates the company with three fellow bowlers from the Taren Point Club, has offered Double Bay members a special discount on any domestic or commercial paint job in the eastern suburbs. We do most of our work in the Zone 13 area and discount our quotes by 10 per cent for local bowlers I don t see why we can t offer the same to eastern suburbs players, Craig told Bay Watch. He can be contacted on or TOP: Craig James puts the finishing touches to the clubhouse veranda floor in Beach Sand colour; ABOVE: The steps with distinctive brown facings. 5

Zone final four spot best for our three THE trio of Harry Black, Les Lilian and Harold Jankelowitz did the best of the club s entry in the Zone 11 State Triples championship played on the Double Bay greens earlier this month when they made the final four. In the semi-final decided on Sunday, August 17, the Double Bay combination went down by six shots (21-15) to the eventual winners, the threesome from Greenlees Park of Ray Coombes, Mark Gorlicki and Tony Monda. After 10 ends, Jankelowitz and Co. were down 15-1, but rallied over the next 10 ends to score 14 shots to their opponents five and have the score line on the 21 st end. Double Bay was well represented in the event hosted by Double Bay on August 2-3 and 17, with an entry of 10 teams, but only the Jankelowitz side found the form needed to win a section and make the semi-finals. In the section matches they knocked out club mates Ken Shapiro, Les Ferguson and John Rosen 25-18, then went on to win section 4 with a resounding decision over the strong Kensington trio of T. Croke, Mark Cross and Craig Scott. and no joy in Zone fours ONLY one of Double Bay s four entries in the 2008 Zone 11 State Fours Championship survived to a section final at the Greenlees Park Club on August 9. The team of Doug King, Arnold Javen, Rob Fetherston and Jack Kampel missed out on qualifying for the semi-finals when they went down by one shot (19-18) in the Section 4 final against Terry Henville s side of Geoff Seton, T Delmar and R Wallis from Alexandria-Erskineville. CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT: Doug King, Rob Fetherston, Jack Kampel and Arnold Javen. 6

They re in the money! MORE than $2300 was distributed to 20 Double Bay Bowling Club members during the afternoon tea break on Wednesday, August 13, by president Rob Hutchins. The cash was prize money for the club s 2007 championship events. At the same time engraved ball point pens were presented to winners of other club events. Leading the list was James Cook for winning three titles and being runner-up in the Major Singles. Les Ginzberg Drawn Pairs winner John Wineberg Minor Singles Fours Champions: Sam Brick, Len Simon, Harry Jacobs and Ivor cham Cohen, winner Double Bay players in Senior Inter-Zone tourney SIX Double Bay players were in a squad of 15 selected to represent Zone 11 in the 2008 Alphapharm Senior Inter-Zone Sides Championship played at Maitland on July They were Gerald Weinberg, Jack Kampel, John Wineberg, Harry Black, Alan Rosenberg and Pepe Glick. The Zone finished second in its section with four points from three games and a plus five shot aggregate. The section was taken out by the unbeaten Zone 14 (North Coast), which defeated Zone 11 in the vital third round after sharing the rinks and taking the aggregate by three shots (52-49). In its first match Zone 11 defeated Zone 8 (Albury-Wagga) and then won against Zone 7 (South Coast) by one shot Gerald Weinberg, as Zone 11 s chairman of selectors, said that it was a good performance by the team, but slightly disappointing after being runner-up last year. We used all 15 players, but in future it would be better to take only one reserve who should perform the function of team manager and will only play if someone is ill. Giving reserves a game because they have made the trip is a disadvantage to the top 12 players selected and disrupts team spirit, Gerald said. Matches were played at Maitland City BC on tift dwarf and couch greens running at 17+ seconds All the latest club news and views now on the daily updated and enlarged DOUBLE BAY BOWLING CLUB WEBSITE 7

ON THE GREEN EDITOR: ALMA GOLDMAN TWO TAKEN TO HOSPITAL DOUBLE Bay s Grade 2 championship team competing in the 2008 NSW Women s Bowling Association s State Pennant playoffs at South Tamworth last month not only had to battle the best in the state, but an outbreak of suspected food poisoning which effected a number of players with two having hospital treatment. In spite of all the problems the team performed well enough to collect 12 points with two wins from its five games. The Grade 2 Pennant was won by Batemans Bay with Northmead the runner-up. This report by Iris Kampel, a member of the team and the club s recently appointed publicity officer. Food poisoning hits team at State Pennant playoffs THE team was mentally prepared for a cold winter start to the No. 2 Pennant Round Robin Playoff at South Tamworth Bowling Club and despite some early morning sunshine the temperature kept dropping. By start of play at 9:30 on the morning of July 21, players were putting on ear muffs, gloves or mitts, hand warmers and anything that would help to keep them warm. Our first match against Cowra produced a good result with a shot to finish with a maximum of five points (winning both rinks and aggregate score), but it was more difficult in the afternoon playing Goulburn Railway because, not only was it cold, but the wind had freshened and it made accurate play very difficult. We went down by only two shots 39-37, collecting one point from a great 25-9 rink win. Next came the turning point in our bid to take challenge for the pennant. A few hours after the second match Barbara Shotland became very ill and despite all efforts to get a doctor, an ambulance had to be called to rush her to Tamworth Hospital with suspected food poisoning. After numerous tests and anti nausea injections, as well as a drip to overcome hydration, the doctor discharged her at midnight. Carol Engelman, our reserve/manager also felt ill and was taken to hospital, but fortunately her condition improved and after seeing the doctor she was soon discharged. It was a very difficult time for all of us and the team that night had very little sleep.the following morning Barbara was showing no signs of improvement and with Carol not feeling fully fit we knew it was going to be a rough day both mentally and physically for all of us. 9 Drama at Tamworth From previous page Despite all the trauma and drama we had a maximum five-point win against Greenacre in the morning. However, there was more misfortune in the afternoon with Carol suffering the onset of cramps and diarrhoea during the game. Club stalwart, Phyllis Glasser, who travelled to Tamworth as a team supporter readily agreed to substitute for the ailing Carol. With borrowed bowls and playing on an unfamiliar green Phyllis did her best and everyone expressed appreciation for her "forever young" spirit and passion for the team. Although we won one rink 24-17, Double Bay lost the game (4-1) against Taree Railway the team which was in 4th place in its section. The best news came that evening when Barbara said she was feeling a lot better and would possibly be able to leave her sick bed the next day for the last match against section leaders, Batemans Bay. Mathematically, a maximum points win over Batemans Bay would give Double Bay a chance to go to the final against the winner of Section 2 It was not to be; Bateman's Bay collected the five points with a solid victory against Double Bay and went on to beat Northmead (42-33) to take home the No.2 State Pennant Flag for Next year s State Pennant Playoffs will be held at Coffs Harbour and we look forward to the challenge of winning our Zone Playoff to again compete in this event. Team picture above from Lorraine McLaughlin shows fill-in substitute Phyllis Glasser (front right) NIGHTINGALE AWARDS BARBARA Shotland has asked On The Green to thank the Double Bay team, local club officials and other competitors at Tamworth for their concern and well wishes during the time of her illness during the State Pennant finals. She and Carol Engelman suffered from suspected food poisoning which necessitated short periods of hospitalisation. There is nothing better than good health - only when its not there can one appreciate it fully, Barbara said.. The support and well wishes from the home-based supporters was wonderful - we all appreciated their calls and text messages. I have Florence Nightingale awards to give out; the girls were fantastic! My special thanks goes to the team - their great spirit and good bowling and determination in all the effort to get so far and try so hard, Barbara added. 10 Trés chic Barbara wins way to State singles championship BARBARA Shotland, the Eastern Suburbs District s Singles Champion, looking trés chic in the new Double Bay Women s Club jacket, with blue slacks and the goldtrimmed shirt, stepped onto the rain-affected green at Earlwood Bardwell Park Bowling club on Friday, July 18, to contest the Group J (Zone) singles final against Cheryl Harrison, of the Engadine Club. Ready for the event was a bank of about 20 uniformed officials, three of whom were from Double Bay. They were alongside a number of Double Bay members who formed the support group for Barbara.. The first two ends were nervous ones with Cheryl playing round the clock and picking up four shots. She has a delivery as smooth as Barbara s but, as well she drew on subsequent ends, Barbara out played her. If Barbara was two or three down, she would came in for the shot and often turned it right around to add two or three more to her score. As the green dried out and the wind came up it was going to be a matter of who adjusted best to the conditions. Barbara managed to remain flexible and concentrated, assessing each hand and delivering superb draw and yard-on shots, Barbara Shotland very chic ON THE GREEN 10 to run out a reasonably comfortable winner by Now Barbara can look forward to the State finals in November. She will be hoping that she can go one better than Iris Kampel, who last year after winning the District and the Group singles titles, had the daunting task of playing Australia s high profile champion, Karen Murphy in the State event. Barbara will face similar opposition, but her standard of bowling at the moment augers well for a fine result. Every member will wish her good bowling and good luck. In the NSW Women s Master Singles at Gymea, Barbara won her first round match against Betty Smith, of Ryde Phoenix 31-24, then in the round of 32 came up against Lisa Prideaux, a member of the NSW squad. After 39 ends Barbara was eliminated Prideaux went on to reach the semi final. A CASE OF THE HAM IN THE SANDWICH! THE suspected food poisoning suffered by Barbara Shotland and Carol Engelman at Tamworth is believed to have come from a plate of mixed sandwiches. Ironically, they became effected because they swapped with team member Lorraine McLaughlin their ham sandwiches for those with an egg filling. Lorraine told On The Green that Barbara suffered the most because she ate only egg sandwiches, while Carol had two of egg and several others with different fillings. It appeared that Barbara suffered the most because it was the only food she digested at that time.

ON THE GREEN Experience key to Major Pairs crown By Iris Kampel JENNY Welton chalked up her second title in recent weeks when she teamed with Karen Levinson to take Double Bay Women s Club s Major Pairs crown on Tuesday, July 15, with a win over Mary Newin and Marie Thatcher. A few weeks earlier, Jenny skipped Rayna Rosenberg to capture the District Pairs title. This year s Pairs Final featured two new team combinations highlighting the great depth of the playing membership and fresh names being added to the honour boards. Mary Newin and Marie Thatcher are both excellent draw bowlers and very good leads, who have proved their worth in the top pennant sides, while Jenny Welton and Karen Levinson are both outstandingly talented and versatile players able to cope with any position in a team. In the final the No.2 green was running well and, with the fine weather, each head was keenly contested, bringing out the best in the four combatants. Eventually, experience won the day as Karen and Jenny pulled away for a comfortable win. Karen Levinson Jenny Welton TRIO TEAM DOWN IN GROUP PLAYOFF Mary Newin, Karen Levinson and Pam Stein played a very strong Blakehurst combination of Gai Henry, Kay Parnell and Norma Richardson in the Group J Triples, last month. Conditions of play were extreme, with a cold southerly wind gusting across the green and a swirling westerly adding to their woes. Our girls got off to a very good start and pulled away to 6-1 lead. Without warning disaster struck and they gave away five shots for six-all. This "tonic" gave Blakehurst momentum and they gradually went ahead. By the 15 th they led Then an excellent three shots by Double Bay levelled the score to after 17 ends. After 19 ends the score stood and anyone's match. On the 20 th end the opposing lead put her first bowl a few inches from the jack and followed up with another two very close bowls. No matter what our girls tried the opposition kept them out. The tension mounted as Blakehurst built up a formidable position. With her last bowl Pam tried valiantly to save, but the opposing skip drew well and scored. - IRIS KAMPEL 11 Valiant in Zone Pairs defeat AFTER heavy overnight rain and a cold morning southerly, the first round of the Zone J pairs playoff between Eastern Suburb (Double Bay s combo of Rayna Rosenberg and Jenny Welton) and St George Canterbury (Blakehurst s Gai Henry and Norma Richardson) the players got off to an exciting and keenly contested game at Randwick. on Tuesday July, 29 Despite the intermittent showery spells and the strong gusts of wind, both teams handled the conditions very well and the scores were quite close. However, St George gained momentum from the10th end and ran out to a 10 shot difference and looked to be on their way to an easy win. Rayna and Jenny fought back and bowled beautifully so that by the 19 th end were trailing by only four shots On the 20 th end, facing a further deficit of three shots, Jenny played a perfectly weighted bowl to get the shot and the score at 15-18, the underdogs looked poised to cause a tremendous upset. After five bowls had been delivered Jenny had a trail on four shots. With her first delivery she hit the jack, but it didn't move forward, and her next bowl again just brushed the jack without staying on her bowl Lady luck was not with our girls on that 21 st end, but they were valiant to the end and we were very proud of their fighting spirit. -- IRIS KAMPEL

BOWLS NSW the monthly magazine produced by The Royal NSW Bowling Association, is a very worthwhile publication and in recent times has made great advances in the number of pages and in its print style. The July edition was so chock-a- block full that editor Rex Davies included a paragraph which alerted the readership that many articles and photographs have been held over due a very high demand for space, despite extra pages added In February this year Bowls NSW introduced LIFESTYLE OPTIONS a 12-page magazine within a magazine, which has little if anything to do with lawn bowls, but offered advice on general health matters, women s beauty and fashion. The July issue of Lifestyle-Options contained an article about Baby Massage Awareness Week, another on the important background to colds and flu and then there was the illustrated page about a special bra for women who travel to compete in events, plus a full page advertisement (pictured left) extolling the secrets of the most comfortable bra you ll ever wear. That, we would suggest, is taking the push for lawn bowls unification a bit too far! EVER wonder what would happen if the caterer who provides our afternoon tea breaks is a last minute withdrawal from duty? Well, it happened a few Saturdays ago when Ewa phoned in sick and couldn t make it that afternoon. No worries, said administrator James Cook, he and barman, Graham Armstrong, would take care of the chores. And they did, but it was nothing like what we have come accustomed to; tea (or coffee) in plastic cups and help yourself to a couple of Arnott s biscuits. And what a mess we made, as evidenced by the pictures at right! WITH many exgolfers in our membership Eddie Fingret (a highly rated golfer in his day) suggested that this item would be appreciated. The husband reluctantly agreed to play in the Couples Alternate Shot tournament at his club. He teed off on the first hole, a par four, and blistered a drive 300 yards down the middle of the fairway. Upon reaching the ball, the husband said to his wife, "Just hit it toward the green. Anywhere around there will be fine." The wife shanked the ball deep into the woods., but the husband said "That's okay, sweetheart," and spent five minutes looking for the ball, finding it in a horrible position, but played the shot of his life to finish within two feet of the hole. He told his wife to tap the ball in, but she sent it off the green into a bunker. Still maintaining composure, the husband somehow holed the shot from the bunker. Walking off the green, he put his arm around his wife and calmly said "Honey, that was a bogey and that's okay. I think we can do better on the next hole." To which she replied "Listen, dear, don't yell at me. Only two of those five shots were mine! 12
