SCOUTING THE CRUSADERS Holy Cross finished the 2015-2016 season with an overall record of 15-17 and went 11-7 in conference play. The Crusaders finished their season placing 3rd the league after a loss against Lehigh in the Patriot League Championship Quarterfinals. Holy Cross is coached by Bill Gibbons who has been with the program for over 30 years. On Monday night, the Crusaders lost to Bryant 76-74 in an overtime battle. Junior guard Infiniti Thomas-Waheed led Holy Cross with a total of 23 points. In October, Thomas-Waheed was named to the preseason All-Patriot League following an average of 11.8 points per game and 4.7 rebounds per game during the 2015-2016 season. FILL IN THE GAPS After the departure of Marist seniors Tori Jarosz, Sydney Coffey, and Eileen Van Horn, the Red Foxes will look to replace 59 percent of its points, 50 percent of its rebounds, 57 percent of its assists, and 45 percent of its minutes played. MAKING THE LEAP The Red Foxes will rely on the sophomore to junior jump from Kendall Baab and Allie Clement, who finished third on the team in scoring behind Jarosz and Coffey. Along with the junior veterans the Red Foxes will hope for a freshman to sophomore jump from point guard Claire Oberdorf, guard/forward Maura Fitzpatrick, and contributions from frontcourt players Lovisa Bjort Henningsdottir and Morgan Bartner. NEWBIES The already young core invites three new freshman to the team as well. The young trio is expected to make immediate contributions from the guard and forward positions. Twins Rebekah and Hannah Hand enter the fold after highly successful high school and travel careers that led to national recruiting rankings for both. Hannah Hand is a 5 10 guard from Argyle, Texas that can space the floor and handle the ball from the point guard position. Rebekah Hand is the bigger of the two twins, standing at 5 11. Rebekah can also shoot from deep but will handle the ball much less as more of a true shooting guard. Along with the guards Molly Smith joins the team as a multidimensional big that can shoot the three and play the interior. ALL-MAAC PRESEASON HONORS Junior guard Allie Clement has been selected to the women s basketball preseason All-Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Third Team. Clement, who was named to the All-MAAC Rookie Team in 2014-15 led the MAAC in three-pointers per game, was fourth in the MAAC in three-point percentage, and also led all returning players in scoring, assists, and steals from last season. TWO-SPORT PHENOM Sophomore guard Claire Oberdorf appeared in 30 games and started 18 for the Red Foxes last season, averaging 21.5 minutes per game while averaging 4.5 points per game. Oberdorf eased into the point guard position from the start of her freshman campaign but quickly grabbed the reigns with her tenacity on defense and stout offensive rebounding ability on offense. Oberdorf turned into a serviceable three point shooter by season s end and her game is only expected to grow in year two. Oberdorf along with her sister Jayne are also Outstanding softball talents. Oberdorf was named Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Rookie of the Year in Softball along with helping to lead the Marist Softball team to an NCAA Apperance. Allie Best, Willow Duffell, and Gabi Redden will join the Red Foxes as true freshmen for the 2017-18 season. All three of them bring something that we need in the program. Giorgis said of the newest members of the Red Foxes. WELCOME ALLIE BEST Allie Best 5 8 / Guard Voorhees High School / Glen Gardner, NJ Allie Best, a 2015-16 Section Title and Hunterdon Warren Sussex county champ, was the captain of her high school basketball team, and received Hunterdon County First Team honors for the 2015-16 season, as well the 2015-16 Hunterdon Country Player of the Year award. She was also named to the 2015-16 Courier News All-Area First Team and averaged 11.9 points, 4.8 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game as a junior. Best was also the captain of her high school soccer team and is a member of the National Honors Society. Giorgis on Allie Best Allie is a pure point guard. A pass first point guard who can shoot it real well, but always finds the open person at the right time. WELCOME WILLOW DUFFELL Willow Duffell 6 2 / Forward Monroe Woodbury HS / Harriman, NY Willow Duffell, a 2015-16 First Team All-Conference player, helped lead her team to a Section 9 Championship her junior year averaging 10 points, 7.1 rebounds, and 2.1 blocks a game. Duffell spent the summer playing for the Empire State Basketball club where she averaged 15 points and 15 rebounds a game. Duffell also won a Section 9 Soccer title in 2016 and is a member of the National Honors Society. Giorgis on Willow Duffell Willow is a very athletic 4/5 player, somebody who can really get up and down the floor. We were very impressed when we watched her in AAU that she could switch onto guards and stay in front of guards. She gives us some really good athleticism up front. PRESEASON PICK The Marist women s basketball team has also been selected fifth in the 2016-17 coaches preseason poll, the first time the Red Foxes haven t received a top three preseason poll position since head coach Brian Giorgis second season at the helm. The preseason poll is voted on by all 11 head coaches in the MAAC and the Red Foxes received a total of 72 points in the poll. Last season Marist finished 14-6 in the MAAC and 16-16 overall. At the top of the poll, Quinnipiac University has been selected as the Preseason favorite to win the 2017 MAAC Women s Basketball Championship. Reigning MAAC Champions, Iona College placed second in the Preseason poll, receiving the other four first-place votes. Rounding out the top-five are Siena College who placed third after going (10-10 MAAC, 14-18 overall) last season, Fairfield University coming in fourth after a (11-9 MAAC, 16-15 overall) finish in 2015-16, and Marist. MAAC HONOR ROLL The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference held its annual MAAC Honor Roll dinner at the Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame Court of Dreams. Marist s honorees were Alan Tomiday and Stacy (Gengler) Girard. Alan Tomidy was one of the top big men to ever suit up for the Red Foxes. A mainstay in the paint during the mid-1990s, Tomidy is the only player in program history to average a double-double in a season. Stacey Girard, known as Stacey Dengler in her playing career, is one of the top post players in Marist women s basketball history. She graduated as the program s all-time leading rebounder with 888, and its second all-time leading scorer with 1,481 points. MARIST AND BREAST CANCER AWARENESS For the eighth straight year, the Marist Athletics Department partnered with the Women s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) to host a Play 4Kay game, formerly known as Pink Zone, when the Red Foxes played host to Niagara on Febraury 14, 2015. The Red Foxes have been actively involved in raising funds for breast cancer since 2003, and have raised thousands of dollars and reached over 17,000 fans at the McCann Center for these games. The 2012 game was particularly special for Marist assistant coaches Erin Leger and Alisa Kresge as their mothers, Margaret Leger and Diane Somers, who are both breast cancer survivors, served as the Red Foxes guest coaches for the game. MILES OF HOPE BREAST CANCER FOUNDATION Miles of Hope Breast Cancer Foundation is the primary beneficiary of Marist s Play 4Kay contest. A foundation based in the Hudson River Valley, Miles of Hope helps people in the Hudson Valley who are affected by breast cancer. The foundation serves eight counties: Dutchess, Greene, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Ulster and Westchester. The foundation was started by Dana Effron and Cathy Varunok who were both personally affected by breast cancer in their lives. The pair began their involvement with breast cancer fund raising at a national level, but decided to give back in their own community, the Hudson River Valley. Pari Forood serves as the Executive Director of the foundation and is responsible for all administrative aspects of the foundation including fund raising, public/media relations among other things. She coordinates four major fund raising events for the foundation each year, including the Hoops for Hope Women s Basketball Tournament, which is held at the James J. McCann Center in March. WOMEN S BASKETBALL COACHES ASSOCIATION The WBCA began the WBCA Play 4Kay, formerly known as Pink Zone and Think Pink, in 2007 as an initiative to raise breast cancer awareness in women s basketball, on campuses and in communities. The late Kay Yow, former North Carolina State University head women s basketball coach, served as the catalyst for the initiative after her third reoccurrence of breast cancer in 2006. The mission of the initiative is a nation of coaches raising breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond. The Kay Yow Cancer Fund will continue to be the official charity of the initiative. Founded in 1981, the WBCA promotes women s basketball by unifying coaches at all levels to develop a reputable identity for the sport and to foster and promote the development of the game as a sport for women and girls. PACK THE HOUSE HISTORY JAN. 25, 2008 The Marist women s basketball program recorded its first sellout in program history on its inaugural Pack the House night, one of only six schools in the nation to record a sellout.
