December 2015 Newsletter of the Brookville Lake Sailing Association From The Helm Commodore Scott Webb Design First Beneteau First 285 Hanna Creek, Slip 73 Commodore Webb Calendar We had a great season, capped off with a great banquet. Pictures were shared, drinks were served, awards were presented, and a few stories were told, I am sure. And through the generosity of club members donations and the attendees bidding, we had our most successful silent auction yet, raising over $2,000 toward our Social Dock at Hanna Creek. But thanks go out not only to everyone who contributed and purchased, but also to everyone who helped organize the event. Cathi Ege went above and beyond, getting this together again this year, with one foot tied behind her back. Thanks to Ron Stevens for his help, Dave Holdren, for organizing the venue, and to square for inventing a way for us to take credit cards on a phone. The Holidays are upon us, of course, so for the next few weeks we will all be busy shopping, preparing for travelling or hosting, and all the excitement that goes with the season. What about gifts for sailors? Anything with your boat name on it is good; Team jackets, like the CaJacob CutThroat crew. Past Behavin has monogrammed towels. On Design First, of course, we have unbreakable cocktail glasses (as it turns out however, they do not float). Maybe the best idea for your uninitiated family members, is to send them to Strictly Sail for a gift certificate. Then you can get something really cool for next season (like bottom paint). So we ll all get through the Holiday season and toast the end of 2015, only to be greeted head on by January in the Midwest with 5 months before the docks at Hanna Creek are floating again. It will go faster than you think, so here is my plan for getting through In January, the Board will be working on the social and racing calendars for next season. Page 2 The Mainsheet December 2015 Send us an email, give us your thoughts on a new social event for the year. Let us know which events you like, which you don t, and what new rules you want to see for the racing. And make your list of your boat projects for the off season. Spend those gift certificates. In February, we ll start the membership drive, and will have a winter get-together. The Board will be setting budgets for the various programs. Take another look at your project list. It s still too cold and dark to do much. Have a Corona, think about the missing pieces. Look for a new picture for the membership book! In March, we get our first glimpse of Spring. You ve sent in your membership form, and maybe even been to visit your boat. Those projects look totally doable once it gets a little warmer. It s practically time for the Sock Burning. Spring arrives in April. We burn our winter socks, the season is set, and the membership books are on their way to the printer. Time to work on the boat. But there are already boats in the water. A bunch of Club members are wintering over at Kent s. Maybe we ll sneak in an early sail with Tim & Tracey, Bill & Patty, Phil & Laurie, Barry & Jan, Randy & Janice.. It will be over sooner than you think. Social Director Dave Holdren Wind Shadow Kells 23 Hanna Creek, Slip 55 The annual Awards Banquet and Meeting was held on November 14, 2015, at the Hueston Woods Lodge and Conference Center with 55 members in attendance. Scott Webb conducted the business meeting and John Slawter did a great job presenting the racing awards for 2015. Nicole Holtkamp was the recipient (unfortunately she was not in attendance to accept it) of the newly established social Save the Day Award that is awarded to the member that truly saved the day for a social event host. Nicole jumped in with both feet to assist Tim Fry with the 1661 social. This is the end of my tenure as Social Director and I want to thank everyone that hosted social events over the last two years and everyone that pitched in and helped the hosts set up, tear down, and repack the social trailer. It takes more than the hosts to put on the events and that is the great thing about the BLSA club, members pitch in and help the hosts without being asked. This makes the Social Director s and Hosts job a lot easier. Again, thank you to everyone. I really appreciate the assistance.

Page 3 The Mainsheet December 2015 Racing Director John Slawter Uno Mass S2 7.9 Hanna Creek, Slip 71 Tis the Season (to get ready for next season!) Thank you again to everyone in BLSA for a great 2015 racing season. Your participation and support made it a fantastic summer. The annual banquet was a blast as usual and we recognized several people. Uno Mas took home the club championship with Bullship II and Cut Throat following in 2 nd and 3 rd respectively great job! More importantly, I want to recognize our new racers this year. All of them will receive a subscription to Sailing World magazine this year as a thank you for their participation: Skyp and Jana Harmon (also awarded 2015 Best New Racer ) Frank and Maureen Parsons with Geoff and Susan Fine Matt and Angela Cunningham Nelson and Chelsea Mead Andrew and Lydia Thaler Perhaps most importantly, we also recognized our volunteers who served on committee duty and organized and ran our 2015 Family Day event and the Anchoring and Rafting Seminar. We owe a huge thank you to all of our volunteers, including the following stand-outs: Paul Hemker support during Family Day and throughout the season The Tacy Family served committee duty (and flying hot dogs) at the Pig Regatta Jack Slawter served committee duty as our Unofficial Race Steward Ashli Slawter ran our kids program at the Family Day event Chris Hughes ran the Anchoring and Rafting Seminar Now that 2015 has come to a close, it is time to think ahead to the 2016 season. We will continue to adapt the racing program to meet the needs of the BLSA membership with the following goals in mind: have fun in a competitive but relaxed atmosphere, increase participation in the racing program, and improve our sailing and racing skills through competition and education. In the coming months, I will be soliciting ideas from everyone in BLSA on how to improve the racing program to meet those goals. If you have any suggestions at all, please do not hesitate to reach out to me at john.slawter@gmail.com. I am looking forward to another great season in 2016! Don t let the cold weather get you down. April will be here before you know it and the next few months are really just extra time to prepare your crew and your boat for more great racing! Have a wonderful holiday season and see you on the starting line!
