At the Helm Commodore Dan Robinson Traveling I want to thank the membership for responding to our call for prospective new members at the New Members Happy Hour last month. There were more new candidates present than I ever recall during my years at the club. Your response proves that there are people in our community who want to go sailing and associate with sailors. All we need to do is bring them to the club, and the club will sell itself. Your sponsorship of a new member will benefit CSC for years to come. I had the pleasure of congratulating the award winners at one of our Youth Camps in June, and it was great to see how excited the children were about sailing and how much fun they had at the camp. When I asked how many of them wanted to keep sailing, many hands went up. Of course, I pointed that out to the parents and grandparents in attendance. I want to thank Zoe Dommel, Dick Dommel's daughter, for stepping in and being our CSC Logos We want pictures of CSC members wearing their CSC- Logo clothing while traveling/vacationing. Add a few sentences about your trip. Gary and I went to Annapolis in early June! See page 4 Margeryballowe@aol.com (803) 381-8732 Page 1
instructor this year. By all accounts, she did a fantastic job, and we were fortunate to have someone with her sailing and teaching skills to make this year's camp special. I also want to thank Charlie Brooks, our Youth Sailing Chairman! Charlie is to be congratulated for running a successful camp this year. It is a bigger job than he realized, and he excelled his first time out. I appreciate his taking on the task and have a feeling that my canteen tab will be much larger for the rest of the year. Finally, the July 4th holidays are upon us; the celebrations are cranking up. This will be a special occasion for our club as we celebrate our 60th anniversary, the grand opening of our new beach house, and Independence Day. Get out to the club and go sailing, enjoy the beach, or just sit on the porch and watch the boats go by. It s summertime on Lake Murray! See you at the club, Dan New Members Happy Hour 2017! Page 2
The Vice Report Vice Commodore Jan Jernigan Education On Saturday, June 10 th, CSC hosted another America s Boating Course for teens and adults. New provisional member, Hilarie Brush and her partner, Braxton Sorg, once again did an excellent job teaching about safe boating. The class was attended by several teens, including M Roney, the daughter of Margaret Clarkson and Peter Roney. She is also the niece of our Immediate Past Commodore, Andrew Clarkson. M and the other class members, including our Entertainment Chair, Emery Clark, completed the class successfully and received ABC certificates. This was a very comprehensive, informative course. CSC is all about safe boating and this was a great class to learn what we all should know. We had 17 students and most were new to the club. This was a great way to meet our education requirements and showcase our beautiful club! Membership You were in luck if you were at CSC on Friday, June 2 nd! Alecia Milling and Lee Bell put together a New Members Happy Hour to remember. The porch was crowded from end to end with lots of smiling faces! Many thanks go to everyone who brought delicious food and wonderful guests. Our Membership Committee did a great job meeting, greeting and signing off on new member applications. We signed eight applications that night which must be some kind of record! The Membership Committee includes Bruce Seiffert, Jerry Jowers, Stanley Hassinger, Robby Garfield, Wayne Smith, Pete Korn and me. If you have any other new applicants, please get them to meet us. You will need three of these committee members and yours truly to meet new applicants and sign the applications. And thanks again to Alecia, Lee and CSCA for putting on a fabulous party! The Board of Stewards recently voted in two new provisional members, Amy Howard London, and Chris Ward. You might recall that Amy is the daughter of Jerry and Mary Howard and mother of Bane London. Bane was the winner of the Outstanding Junior Sailor Award last year. Amy is thrilled to be at CSC! She has lots of wonderful memories of sailing as a child with her family. Chris is very passionate about sailing and is a SCUBA Diving Instructor. Clearly, he loves the water! He also loves photography. He was a member of the College of Charleston Sailing Club, where he sailed J/22 s. He is sponsored by Bruce Seiffert. Please introduce yourself to Amy and Chris and welcome them to the CSC family! Rich Horton has applied for membership with CSC. He is sponsored by Robert Key. Rich is married to his lovely wife, Amanda. Between the two of them, they have four darling children. Rich attended summer camp at CSC about 30 years ago! He still loves to sail his Sunfish. He and Amanda have enjoyed two week-long bareboat charters. Rich and Amanda are looking forward to meeting more CSC members and getting their children involved in sailing. In addition, Juanita Wright is applying for membership. Juanita is the CEO of a local non-profit organization, Welvista. She is married to Ben Wright, a radiation oncology doctor with SC Oncology Associates. They have one son, Colby, daughter-in-law, Mandy and a grandson, Xander, who will likely attend CSC Summer Camp in the future. Juanita is sponsored by Maria De Hart. Juanita and Ben are excited about the possibility of joining our CSC family! Ben Simons is applying for membership. He attended several youth sail camps at CSC. Ben became such a talented sailor he went on to become an instructor! Years ago, he represented CSC in the SAYRA Bemis Youth Semi-finals. Married to his lovely wife, Tracy, Ben has sailed on Sunfish, Lasers 420 s, Y-Flyer s and you name it! He is sponsored by his brother, CSC member Arthur Simons III. A Jack of all Trades, Ben is eager to help on CSC projects. Having many wonderful memories of CSC as a youth, Ben hopes to be able to join the club as an adult! Jan Our trip to Annapolis, Maryland Temperatures were rising and our son Charles needed the air conditioner for his liveaboard Bristol 35.5! Although cool while we were there, it was noticeably hotter when we were leaving. While in Annapolis, we enjoyed a day-sail on a new Beneteau 41.1. Gary and Charles removed and re-bedded the bow pulpit on the Bristol 35.5. (Charles is a firm believer in butyl tape as a bedding compound.) *Take a photo wearing your CSC logo clothing/hats while on vacation. We want to feature members pictures and travels. Page 4
The Rear Commodore s Report Rear Commodore David Mosely The summer dinghy sailing series in in full swing, however the wind Gods have not been so nice. But, the food has been! Special thanks to Pat Freeman and Marybeth Mahrer for some really excellent meals and desserts that even dieters couldn't pass up! If you have a Sunfish, laser, or want to sail one, come on out and let us help you get started. Columbia Sailing Club s youth sailing camps were awesome again this year. Thanks to many people: Charlie Brooks, Dick and Zoe Dommel, and a host of young sailors, most of whom have participated in the camp before. There was a lot of coordination, nail biting about the new beachhouse opening, and getting all those kids to get out and lose that fear of the boom hitting their heads. There were many smiles and many appreciative parents the two days I spent with the kids. Thanks to all who helped and all who participated. I hope to see you on the water soon! David CSC Auxiliary News President Kim Milling The longer days of summer are finally here, and that means more time to enjoy hanging out at the lake and having fun. FUN was definitely the order of the evening for the New Members Happy Hour in June. Thank you to Alecia Milling and Lee Bell for planning and hosting a great party! The new Beach House is finished and open for use. The Auxiliary added some finishing touches with new shower curtains and trash cans, and over the coming months will be working with committee to determine what others items, such as furniture that might be needed. As part of CSC's 60th anniversary celebration, the Auxiliary is offering a special edition t-shirt designed by Jim Edwards. There will be a limited amount so if you want one make sure to get your reservation in to Diane Augsburger. The t-shirts will be available at the July 4th celebration on Saturday July 1st. Since the Auxiliary had the summer off, our next meeting will be September 12th. Have a fun and safe summer! See you on the beach. Come and be part of something Great! Kim Page 5
