General Safety Notes for CROMOX Chain Slings (Grae 50/60) Instructions for safe use an avoiance of anger. Keep this safety note/manufacturer's eclaration for the entire utilisation time. 1. Choosing the appropriate chain sling: Application is only allowe for slinging an lifting loas. It is to be mae sure that the safe working loas inicate on the attache tags are not exceee. Changes in the safe working loa in epenence of the temperature t are as follows: -40 C to + 250 C over 250 C to 350 C* over 350 C to 450 C W.L.L. 100 % 75 % 50 % *1.4462 max 350 C allowe Use within the amissible temperature range means no permanent reuction of the safe working loas after return to room temperature. Use in acis an alkalis or application in aci or alkaline vapours is only amissible if the material is resistant to corrosion. Any self-effecte moifications, such as exchange of components, thermal or galvanic treatment, will invaliate the prouct liability of Ketten Wäler GmbH. In the case of particularly enangering conitions (lifting of persons; caustic substances; liqui metals; etc.), the egree of enangerment is to be assesse by a competent person an the safe working loa is to be ajuste accoringly. On continuous operation, i. e. at automate prouction lines with high work cycles an often repeate similar movements an ways of transportation, a high ynamic strain (=> 20.000 stress cycles) occur. There is the risk of amage of the proucts ue to the high ynamic strain. In these cases it is essential to reuce the tension i. e. corresponing to mechanism group 1Bm M3 acc. to DIN EN 818-7 by using a higher nominal thickness or size. 2. Visual inspection: Prior to the first application, it is to be mae sure that the chain sling elivere is exactly the one that was orere, the test certificate has been provie, the chain sling is complete with markings an inications as to the safe working loa an that those ata are consistent with the test certificate, all the etails concerning the chain sling have been inclue in the car inex. Prior to each use the chain has to be visually inspecte to check if there is any apparent amage or sign of wear. 3. Hanling of the loa: Any particular specifications regaring the loa have to be observe. Before starting the lifting operation, it has to be mae sure that the loa is freely movable an that it is not anchore or fixe. The mass of the loa must be known. If not, it can be taken from ocuments or shall be etermine by calculation. The location of the centre of gravity shoul be etermine when choosing the sling points an shoul meet the following conitions: chain slings single-leg ouble-leg 3- an 4-leg lifting point to be perpenicular over the centre of gravity for both legs to be over the centre of gravity if ever possible to be evenly istribute over a plane about the centre of gravity an locate over the centre of gravity To ensure the stability of the loa when using multi-leg chain slings, the sling ß shoul be > 15 an shoul be within the inicate range. It must, however, not excee 60 (see example in Fig. 1). 2
Fig. 1 Loa acting on the sling leg Horizontal force The hatche area shows s of inclination greater than 60, where sling chains must not be use. The loa hook for attaching the chain sling shoul be irectly over the centre of gravity. Only slow movements are allowe. Enough space for lifting process must be guarantee. Workers have to keep safety istance, no contact to the loa. Aplication shortening evices: Warning Pull loose unloae chain through circular opening to esire length. Hook the chain into the position as shown in the photo. Ensure correct fit while lifting process. Never loa shortene loose chain stran. Pay attention to loa peaks ue to asymmetric weight istribution. Chain legs must not be twiste or knotte. When using a multiple leg chain sling in a vertical hitch, the hooks must face outwars. 5. When applying a loa to a sling, the following has to be observe: Chain legs must not be twiste or knotte. A loa shoul always be attache to the hook sale an must never be applie to the tip of a hook. Hooks an suspension links must be freely movable in orer to prevent eformation ue to bening stress. When using a multiple leg chain sling in a vertical hitch, the hooks must face outwars. When using the choker hitch, the safe working loa is reuce to 80 %. In orer to avoi amage to chains or to the loa when using choker hitches, it may be necessary to use intermeiate layers or ege protection. 3
In orer to avoi that a loa swings in a angerous manner, it is recommene to use a holing rope. Do not shock-loa chain slings or jerk loas. In inicating the safe working loa, it is assume that the iniviual legs of the chain sling are loae symmetrically. Symmetrical loaing can be assume if all of the following conitions are met: u the loa is less than 80 % of the rate safe working loa an u the of inclination for each chain leg is not less then 15 an u the s of inclination of the chain legs o not eviate by more than 15 from each other an u the sling attachment points for 3- an 4-legge chain slings are locate in a sling plane of not more than 15. For unsymmetrical loaing, the classification of the lifting operation as well as the etermination of the safe working loa is to be entruste to a competent person. Alternatively in the case of unsymmetrical loaing, the safe working loa shoul be reuce to 50 % of the rate value. When using multi-legge chain slings, the following is to be observe if not all of the legs are require for lifting: u Iniviual legs which are not being use shoul be hooke back onto the master link. u In such cases, the following loa factors apply: Type of chain sling Number of Factor to be applie with iniviual legs use respect to the rate SWL 2- lege 3- an 4-legge 3- an 4-legge 1 1/2 2 2/3 1 1/3 All influencing factors are to be taken into account when etermining a sling type an choosing the appropriate chain sling, with the safe working loa to be greater than the loa to be lifte. Safety uring lifting operations: u ISO 12480-1 is to be observe in the planning an carrying out of lifting operations. u Hans an other boy parts are to be kept clear when tautening the chain sling. u No other persons must be put in anger. 6. When putting the loa own, the following is to be observe: The place where the loa is to be put own shoul be prepare an mae sufficiently accessible. The groun must have sufficient loa-bearing capacity. It may be necessary to stabilise the loa by using wooen blocks or the like. In orer to prevent amage, the sling chain must not be wege, nor pulle out by means of the lifting gear. Storage of chain slings that are not in use: u In orer to minimise corrosion attacks on chain slings that have been use in acis or alkalis or in aci or alkaline vapours, those chain slings shoul be cleane thoroughly also before removing them from operation temporarily. u Chain slings shoul be store on specially esigne an provie racks. If chain slings are lying on the floor, there is a risk that they might get amage. u Chain slings remaining on the crane hook shoul be hooke back onto the master link. u If chain slings are not to be use in the foreseeable future, they are to be cleane an protecte against corrosion. 7. Maintenance: 4 Inspections shoul be performe by a competent person at intervals of no more than 12 months. If necessary, these intervals shoul be shortene in epenence of the circumstances of use. Prior to inspection, the chain slings are to be cleane thoroughly. Any cleaning metho that oes not attack the basic material is amissible, whereas any processes or proceures that may cause hyrogen embrittlement, overheating or material abrasion or which may hie surface amage are to be avoie. Sufficient lighting is to be provie uring inspections, an all components of the chain sling are to be examine. By means of visual inspections, the chain slings are to be checke for unmistakable ientification (tags) as well as for any visually noticeable efects. If any of the following efects are foun, the chain sling has to be remove from operation an inspecte by a competent person or service/repaire: u Marking/ientification illegible or missing. u Deformation of suspension or sling parts. u Inamissible elongation of chain links, ifferences in leg lengths.
u If, as a result of wear an tear, the nominal thickness of a chain link is < 90 % (see Figure 2). Fig. 2 1 + 2 = < 0,9 x n 2 u Damage (cuts, notches, grooves, cracks, iscoloration ue to heat, excessive corrosion, bent or twiste links, or other efects). u Signs of wiening (excessive throat opening) or eformation of hooks. The wiening must not excee 10 % of the nominal measure; if hooks with safety catch are use, the catch must not become isengage. Inspections are to be recore an prove in writing. 8. When performing maintenance work, the following is to be observe: Each iniviual part of the chain sling has to meet the requirements of DIN 5687, DIN 5688 Part 1 an DIN 7541. Iniviual chain links are not to be replace - replace complete legs instea. Any iniviual parts which are broken, noticeably eforme, seriously corroe, or show eposits which cannot be remove, are to be iscare or replace. Minor notches or furrows in parts of chain slings may be evene out if the remaining material thickness in this point is > 90 % of the nominal thickness an no suen cross-sectional change is noticeable. Wele chain slings may only be repaire by the manufacturer. If weling operations have been performe on chain slings, each iniviual leg which has been repaire has to be teste subsequently with twice the SWL value. Replacement of mechanical connection links requires no loa testing if the iniviual part testing is certifie. u CE Label for completely assemble chains. u The label guarantees that the technical requirements of the EC guieline have been met. Warning: It is prohibite to assemble chains an components of ifferent graes. 5
