Columbia scored six runs over their final three frames and Vinny Siena and David Thompson reached base a combined seven times. FAMOUSLY HOT: Columbia has won six of its last seven games, its best stretch of baseball this season. S-T-UPENDOUS: Vinny Siena and David Thompson are the only two Fireflies to start all 20 games this season (and are both in the lineup on Thursday, too). The pair has formed arguably the best 1-2 punch in the South Atlantic League: Siena:.377 AVG (#4 in SAL),.518 OBP (#1), 20 R (#2) Thompson: 23 RBIs (#1 in SAL), 8 2Bs (#2), 18 R (#4) PERFECT: On Wednesday night, Siena reached base safely in all four plate appearances. The righty singled, walked, tripled and was hit by a pitch. He is reaching base more than 50% of the time. Only three other players in professional baseball have a higher on-base percentage than Sienna (.518). GOOD EYE: No other team in the South Atlantic League has drawn more walks than Columbia. Fireflies hitters have drawn 81 free passes in 2016, good for at least four per night. That s helped the club s run production. Columbia is first in the SAL in total runs scored (112). The Columbia roster features not just former high school football players, but two who played collegiately as well. After starring at Lamar Academy, Witt Haggard played at Ole Miss (later transferring to Delta State to play baseball exclusively) and David Thompson was a member of the Miami Hurricanes roster for a season in 2012. Joe Tuschak (Northern York-PA) and Thomas McIlraith (Tascosa-TX) were also starting quarterbacks at their respective high schools. 2016 FIREFLIES MANAGER MANAGER JOSE LEGER On January 27, 2016, the New York Mets announced Jose Leger as the first manager of the Columbia Fireflies. This will be Leger s seventh season in the Mets organization and second managing New York s single-a affiliate. Last year the 2015 South Atlantic League Manager of the Year led the Savannah Sand Gnats to their secondhighest win total in team history and a playoff birth. The Sand Gnats topped the Southern Division in each half of the 2015 season finishing with a record of 84-53. Leger piloted the team to one of the best stretches of baseball in South Atlantic League history. In August, Savannah won 18 straight games the longest streak in the majors or minors in 10 years and finished the month with a 25-2-1 record. Ironically, it was a rain-shortened tie on August 23rd that snapped the win streak. Because of his success, the Mets added Leger to their Major League coaching staff in September of 2015. Prior to last season, the 33-year-old from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, served three years as manager of the Mets advanced-rookie affiliate the Kingsport Mets in the Appalachian League. In 2013, he led Kingsport to a division title. In 2010 and 2011, Leger managed one of the Mets two Dominican Summer League clubs. Leger played professionally in the Minnesota Twins organization from 2004-2008 as a catcher and infielder. He also had a standout collegiate career in the Peach State. Leger started at Middle Georgia College (Cochran, GA) and helped lead the team to back-to-back Junior College World Series in 2001 and 2002. The infielder then played his final two seasons at Georgia College & State University (Milledgeville, GA) and was an All-Peach Belt Conference selection in 2003 and 2004. This past winter, Leger was the bench coach for St. Lucie Mets (Advanced-A) manager Luis Rojas Leones del Escogido that won the Dominican Winter League championship. Leger also served as the hitting coach for the Dominican Summer League Twins in 2009.
