F Melbourne, Fla. / Holy Trinity Season Notes Navy will host Michigan State in its season opener in the inaugural Quicken Loans Veterans Classic on Nov. 14. VCU will face Tennessee in the event opener at 6:30 PM and Navy will host the Spartans at 9:00 PM. Navy will play at Notre Dame (Nov. 16) and at Providence (Nov. 20) in the campus site rounds of the Basketball Hall of Fame Tip-Off Tournament. Navy will also play two games at the Mohegan Sun Arena on Nov. 22 and Nov. 23. Navy returns five starters from last year and its two leading scorers in seniors Worth Smith (11.8) and Brandon Venturini (11.). Also back is junior guard Tilman Dunbar, who averaged 11.9 points and.0 assists in 10 games. Senior Kevin Alter will serve as the team captain in 2014-1. Alter has played in 6 career games at Navy. Alter, at -foot-6, will be the shortest player in NCAA Division basketball this season. Head coach Ed DeChellis enters his fourth season at Navy in 2014-1. This will be his 19th season as a Division head coach and he has 239 career wins. Navy opens the 2014-1 season with players representing 10 different states (California, Florida, Michigan, Missouri, New Jersey, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia). Navy increased its overall win total for the second straight season in 2013-14 and will look to make it three straight years in 2014-1. Navy also doubled its conference win total from 2013 to 2014. Navy was an improved team in 2013-14, but still struggled to win close games. The Mids were 0-3 in overtime games and lost nine games that it led at halftime. Additionally, Navy lost nine games that it led or was within three points of the lead with under two minutes to play in regulation last year. Navy defeated Army in the annual Star Game last season, 79-7. Worth Smith scored 23 points and had eight rebounds, Kendall Knorr had 17 points and eight assists while Brandon Venturini had 12 points and eight assists. Smith is one of three players in Navy history (David Robinson and Sitapha Savane) that has surpassed career totals of 80 points, 40 rebounds, 80 blocks and 80 steals. Smith has 867 career points, 480 rebounds, 86 blocks and 80 steals. Smith (867) and Venturini (693) will both seek to score their 1,000th point during their senior seasons. n 2013-14, Navy s 376 turnovers ranked as the second-lowest in school history and the 12.7 turnovers per game also ranked as the second-lowest in school history. 3 3
