DeChellis arrived at Navy after successful stints at East Tennessee State and Penn State, and is the 19th head basketball coach in the 109-year history of Navy basketball. In , DeChellis helped Navy post its most wins in seven years with the team s record. Navy was 9-9 in the Patriot League and finished in a four-way tie for fourth place. Navy s six-win improvement from the season ranked as the fourth-best improvement from one year to the next in program history. Navy also set a program record for most road wins in a season with 11. It was the fourth straight season that DeChellis increased Navy s overall and conference win total. Navy s defensive efforts were a key to the team s success in Navy led the Patriot League in scoring defense (64.7) and field goal percentage defense (.413). Will Kelly was named the Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year and was also named to the all-league second team. Tilman Dunbar was named to the All-Patriot League Third Team. DeChellis has won at least 19 games at three different schools (East Tennessee State, Penn State and Navy). He is the only current Patriot League head coach that has accomplished that feat. DeChellis arrival in Annapolis has corresponded with an increase of exposure for the Navy men s basketball program. Navy was invited to compete in the inaugural Pearl Harbor Invitational in Hawai i in and competed in a field with Oregon, Oklahoma and 2016 National Champion Villanova. Navy also hosted the second annual Veterans Classic during the season, with top-ranked and eventual national runner-up North Carolina, Temple and Florida joining Navy in the field. In his fourth season in Annapolis in , Navy tied for sixth place in the Patriot League standings with an 8-10 record in conference and the Mids were overall. Navy s 13 wins overall was a four-win improvement from the previous season and it was the third straight season that DeChellis increased the team s win total from the previous season. Navy also doubled its conference win total (8) from the previous season (4). DeChellis led Navy to three wins over Army, including the Army-Navy Star Game and in the Patriot League Tournament. It was the fifth time in program history that Navy went 3-0 against Army in a single season. In , Navy ranked second in the Patriot League in scoring defense, allowing 64.3 points per game and its turnover average of just 12.2 per game was the secondlowest in school history. Worth Smith was named to the All-Patriot League First Team and Kevin Alter was just one of five Division I players to be named to the Allstate NABC Good Works Team. Under the direction of DeChellis, the Navy basketball program began a new tradition in the season by hosting the inaugural Veterans Classic. Navy hosted Michigan State, while VCU faced Tennessee in the season-opening showcase in Alumni Hall. 32 I I I I I I In his third season in Annapolis in , DeChellis increased Navy s overall win total for the second straight season and Navy doubled its conference win total from the previous year. A highlight of the campaign was a victory at Army in the Star Game, while the Mids also defeated Bucknell, the defending Patriot League Champion, and Lafayette, the 2013 runner-up. With defensive always being a staple of a DeChellis-coached club, Navy ranked 57th in the country in scoring defense, giving up just 65.2 points per game. At the time, Navy s 376 turnovers and 12.7 turnovers per game that season were the second-lowest in school history. Navy (9-21, 4-14) opened the season at 5-5 and went 4-0 in non-conference home games during the season. In his second season at Navy in , the Midshipmen posted an 8-23 overall record, winning five more games than it did in his first year in Annapolis while playing one of America s youngest lineups, and showing fans what the future might hold for the Midshipmen. The story of the season was taking care of the ball and defense. Navy averaged just 11.3 turnovers per game, the fewest in school history by over two turnovers per game, while ranking 17th nationally. Navy also excelled on the defensive end of the floor, where Navy allowed just 60.9 points per game, the third-lowest total in school history and the lowest for a Navy squad since The Mids ranked 42nd nationally in scoring defense, their lowest rank in over 30 years. The Midshipmen were competitive in almost every game during the season, losing 13 games by single digits or in overtime, including five by three points or less. The Midshipmen closed out the campaign with a 3-26 record. DeChellis led Penn State to a record and a fourth place finish (9-9) in the Big Ten in , including the Nittany Lions first appearance in the Big Ten Championship Game and the school s first trip to the NCAA Tournament since The Nittany Lions were led by senior guard Talor Battle, who finished second in the Big Ten in scoring (20.2 ppg) and became the first player in school history to be named team MVP all four years. Battle finished his career as Penn State s all-time leading scorer with 2,213 points, surpassing Jesse Arnelle s 56-year old Penn State record of 2,138, and finished 10th all-time in Big Ten history. DeChellis was the 2009 Big Ten Coach of the Year, just the second Penn State basketball coach to ever earn coachof-the-year honors, as he guided a Nittany Lion team that started three sophomores to a school-record 27 wins and the program s first-ever national tournament title in winning the 2009 NIT. Along the way Penn State tied a program record for regular season wins (21), posted its secondmost Big Ten Conference wins (10) and second-best finish (4th) ever, recorded just the 10th 20-win season in program history, knocked off four Top 25 teams (including a road win at eventual NCAA runner-up Michigan State), set a record for home wins (17) and posted the program s most road wins (6) in the Big Ten era.

2 Coaching Staff I I I NAVY men s basketball I I I Penn State s remarkable run was led by Battle, who was a first-team All-Big Ten, NABC and USBWA all-region selection and NIT MVP Jamelle Cornley, who finished his career ranked fourth all-time in scoring and rebounding at Penn State. Neither player was a highly sought blue-chip recruit, but found remarkable success and achievement under the tutelage of DeChellis and his staff. His coaching performance in had many of his Big Ten colleagues and members of the media pointing to him as the conference s coach-of-the-year. Primed for a run to the post-season in his fifth year at the helm, DeChellis saw his leading scorer, rebounder and preseason All-Big Ten first-team pick Geary Claxton go down with a torn ACL 16 games into the season. Second leading scorer and rebounder Jamelle Cornley also suffered a knee injury that limited him for much of the season and caused him to miss six games, including the last three. All DeChellis did was lead a team that started four freshmen and five newcomers to its most Big Ten wins and best Big Ten finish since Along the way his young Lions knocked off No. 7 Michigan State and No. 17 Indiana while winning five straight home games to end the campaign. The Nittany Lions reached the NIT in 2006, DeChellis third year at the helm. Despite playing the youngest (12 underclassmen and one senior) and smallest line-up (just one player over 6-6 playing more than four minutes per game in league play) in the Big Ten, DeChellis led Penn State to its most overall wins (15), most non-conference wins (eight), most Big Ten wins (six), first Big Ten Tournament win and first post-season appearance (NIT) in five seasons. DeChellis recruiting and coaching helped Penn State claim its first ever Big Ten Freshman-of-the-Year (Jamelle Cornley, 2006) and three straight members of the Big Ten All-Freshman Team (Marlon Smith, 2004; Geary Claxton, 2005; Jamelle Cornley, 2006). The Lions had none before his arrival. He also set about changing and revitalizing the program s culture - stressing family, a team-first attitude and a commitment to excellence without shortcuts that his players embraced and took ownership of. DeChellis wrapped up the year by being named the 2006 National Coaches Vs. Cancer Man-of-the-Year for his contributions in raising funds and awareness in the fight against cancer. DeChellis was presented the award by ESPN s Jay Bilas before a large gathering of his peers at the Laurel Valley Golf Club in western Pennsylvania. Penn State was coming off two consecutive seven-win seasons when DeChellis was named the 11th head coach in program history in April of Energizing the fans and players immediately, he helped guide Penn State to nine wins in his first season, better than each of the prior two seasons, with fewer players on scholarship than the previous year. DeChellis began his coaching career in Happy Valley, serving as a graduate assistant coach under Dick Harter and Bruce Parkhill. In 1984, he moved on to Salem College in Salem, West Virginia, where he had a two-year stint as an assistant coach. While at Salem, DeChellis also served as the school s Director of Intramurals. Showcasing the overall commitment to the growth of the young people he comes into contact with, DeChellis increased the Salem program from a four-sport entity into a broad-based program offering 40 activities to over 800 students -- all in just two years, and all while serving as an assistant basketball coach. In 1986, DeChellis returned to Penn State and began a very successful 10-year run as an assistant coach for nine years under Bruce Parkhill, a mentor to whom he credits his development as a coach, and one season under Jerry Dunn. During his time as a Nittany Lion assistant, Penn State made the transition to the Big Ten Conference and had some outstanding post-season success. DeChellis helped guide Penn State to four straight post-season appearances from 1989 through During that four-year span of 20+ win seasons, Penn State posted an impressive record. The squad went 20-12, advanced to the Atlantic 10 Tournament finals and then on to the National Invitation Tournament. The next season, Penn State set a school record for wins in a season posting a 25-9 record. The Nittany Lions advanced to the 1990 NIT semifinals at Madison Square Garden, earning third place. Building on two straight NIT appearances and a record-setting season, DeChellis helped the Penn State team to earn the program s first NCAA Tournament bid since Penn State went and won the Atlantic 10 Tournament title. That win propelled Penn State into the NCAA Tournament and a first round upset of 16th-ranked UCLA. Penn State barely missed out on a trip to the Sweet 16 when it dropped an overtime heartbreaker to Eastern Michigan in the second round. The season was a transitional year for Penn State as its affiliation with the Atlantic 10 ended and the Nittany Lions spent a year as an independent with Big Ten play just a year away. The Nittany Lions went 21-8 and earned another trip to the NIT. Entrance into the Big Ten was a learning experience for the entire Nittany Lion athletic program, but improvement and growth occurred quickly for the basketball program. After a slow start in its initial year, Penn State improved in each year of conference play. 3 I I I NAVY men's basketball I I I Coaching Staff Penn State went 2-16 the first year in the loop, tripled that win total in year two going 6-12, and improved yet again with a 9-9 showing in That team went overall and earned another trip to Madison Square Garden for the NIT semifinals and took home another third place finish. The following year, utilizing many players that DeChellis helped recruit, Penn State had its most successful Big Ten season to date and earned a second trip to the NCAA Tournament for DeChellis. With Parkhill resigning prior to the start of the season, Dunn, an assistant on the Penn State staff with DeChellis, took over the helm of the Lions and along with DeChellis helped guide Penn State to a 21-7 record, a best-ever 12-6 mark and second place finish in Big Ten play, a top 10 national ranking, and another trip to the NCAA Tournament. DeChellis returned to Penn State as the head coach after a very successful sevenyear run as the head coach at East Tennessee State University. At ETSU he turned a last place Buccaneer team into a three-time conference division winner, a conference tournament champion and took ETSU to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in a decade. Taking over a program that went 7-20 the year before his arrival, DeChellis amassed a record in his seven years as head coach from to Showcasing the ability to build a program from the foundation up, DeChellis had his most successful seasons in his last three years. During that span, his ETSU teams went and won three straight Southern Conference North Division titles. DeChellis, who has a career record of at three programs he had to completely rebuild, is a 1982 graduate of Penn State. He and his wife Kim have three daughters, Casey, Erin, and Lauren, and two grandkids, Sophia and Nathan. 6 I I I NAVY men s basketball I I I Coaching Staff Emmett Davis will enter his second season as an assistant coach with the Navy men s basketball program in Davis assists in all aspects of the Navy basketball program, including recruiting, player development, opponent scouting and game-day preparation. Davis was the head coach at Patriot League-member Colgate for 13 seasons ( ) and served as an assistant coach at Navy under both Pete Herrmann and Don DeVoe for 12 seasons ( ). In his first season back in Annapolis in , Davis helped Navy post its most wins in seven years with the team s record. Navy was 9-9 in the Patriot League and finished in a four-way tie for fourth place. Navy s six-win improvement from the season ranked as the fourth-best improvement from one year to the next in program history. Navy also set a program record for most road wins in a season with 11. During his 13 years at Colgate, Davis became the school s all-time winningest head coach with 165 career victories. He led Colgate to either the top half of the Patriot League standings or advanced the team to the semifinals or the championship game of the conference tournament in nine of his 13 seasons. In his first year at Colgate, Davis led his team to a record and advanced to the semifinals of the Patriot League Tournament. In his fourth year, the season, the Raiders posted a record, which was the best record at Colgate since the Adonal Foyle era in Colgate s best season under Davis came during the season when the Raiders advanced to the Patriot League Championship game and tied a school record for wins with 18. In that season, Davis became the school s alltime leader for career victories when he reached his 138th win against Bucknell in the semifinals of the Patriot League Tournament. Davis was hired at Colgate directly from his previous stint at Navy, where he was an assistant coach for 12 seasons. Davis was involved with all aspects of the program during his tenure at Navy. He was responsible for working with the guards during his early years at Navy and worked with the post players over his final four seasons. In his 12 seasons, Navy won four conference championships and advanced to four NCAA Tournaments. Davis is credited with recruiting several accomplished Navy basketball players during his tenure, including two of the top 10 scores in Academy history in Michael Heary (1,590 points; 6th) and Chris Williams (1,496; 9th), and five of the top 25 scorers along with Wes Cooper (23rd), Sitapha Savane (24th) and Jason Jeanpierre (25th). In Davis first season at Navy, he coached National Player of the Year David Robinson. The Midshipmen registered 26 wins, a Colonial Athletic Association Championship and a trip to the NCAA tournament. Davis was also on staff at Navy for the program s Patriot League titles in 1994, 1997 and Following the 1998 season, Davis was named the USNA Foundation Co-Coach of the Year. The 1994, 1997 and 1998 league titles and corresponding NCAA Tournament appearances came in Davis last five seasons at Navy, during which he helped the Mids go (.763) against Patriot League opponents. Davis was also an assistant coach at Tulsa during the season, serving under 1987 Naval Academy graduate Doug Wojcik. Tulsa was overall and 10-6 in Conference USA games. Prior to his return to Navy, Davis most recently served as a college basketball television color analyst for the American Sports Network and Campus Insiders. He also helped coach his sons at Broadneck High School and worked for XOS Digital, a sports technology firm, as their Mid-Atlantic Regional Accounts Manager. Additionally, four Mids were named Patriot League Scholar Athlete of the Year. Navy s first year as a football playing member of the American Athletic Conference was a rousing success as it won a school- record 11 games and tied for the West Division title. The Mids also won the Commander-In- Chief s Trophy and the Lambert Trophy, which signifies the best team in the East, for the first time since The move to the AAC, which was engineered by Gladchuk, will continue to secure Navy s future as a strong national FBS football program for the future. Gladchuk s efforts have been recognized on a national level. He was one of four finalists this spring for the Sports Business Journal s Athletic Director of the Year award and will receive the John L. Toner Award from the National Football Foundation in December, which recognizes an athletics director who has demonstrated superior administrative abilities and shown outstanding dedication to college athletics and particularly college football. Gladchuk won the Bobby Dodd Athletic Director of the Year Award in The award is presented in recognition of an athletic director s support and commitment toward the successful advancement of the department, most specifically in the sport of football. Additionally, he was recognized by the Secretary of the Navy for his contributions and service to the Navy and the Naval Academy with the Superior Public Service Award to the Department of the Navy. Gladchuk has been able to parlay Navy s athletic success into an exclusive television deal with CBS Sports Network that has increased Navy s television exposure both in the United States and internationally. CBS Sports Network, the first 24-hour college sports network, televises every Navy home and select neutral site football games (excluding Notre Dame and Army which are televised nationally by CBS), as well as other Midshipmen men s and women s athletic events, original programming and documentaries centered on the storied Navy athletic program. The long-term, multi-media agreement includes internet streaming, broadband and video-on-demand rights and high definition rights. A major part of the agreement was that all home football games would be played on Saturday for the convenience of the Navy alumni. Navy sports are seen all over the world with the international distribution of Navy programming, especially to the troops serving abroad. Navy s contract with CBS Sports Network runs through Gladchuk has also added radio giants WBAL (1090 AM) in Baltimore and WFED (1500 AM, 1050 AM, 820 AM) in Washington D.C./Northern Virginia to Navy s radio network. WBAL Radio, which is also the home of the Ravens, is Maryland s dominant and most powerful radio station. WFED Radio, which is also the home of the Washington Nationals, is a 50,000-watt station that will air a minimum of 10 regular-season football games. Since being introduced as the Academy s 28th Director of Athletics on Sept. 4, 2001, Gladchuk has pressed forward on numerous fronts with energy and vision. From the hiring of some of the top coaches in the country to the renovation of Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium, Gladchuk has made improvements in several key areas that will prove more success on the athletic fields for years to come. Head coaching hires such as Ken Niumatalolo, who is the school s all-time winningest football coach, Bill Roberts in men s swimming, John Morrison in women s swimming, Paul Kostacopoulos in baseball, Keith Puryear in women s tennis, Nadia Ste-Marie in women s golf, Cindy Timchal, the all-time winningest women s lacrosse coach in NCAA history, Stefanie Pemper, one of the alltime winningest Division III women s basketball coaches in history, Larry Bock, the all-time winningest coach in collegiate volleyball history, Ed DeChellis, the 2009 Big Ten Basketball Coach of the Year at Penn State, Rick Sowell, who was a two-time America East Men s Lacrosse Coach of the Year, Chris Garner, who led Amherst to two NCAA Division III Men s Tennis titles and Joel Sharratt, a three-time All-American wrestler at Iowa. During Gladchuk s tenure at the Naval Academy, he has seen the Midshipmen win 138 conference titles, produce 195 All-Americans and 88 Academic All- Americans. He has embraced the local community and alumni base, and is an often-requested speaker, visiting areas all over the country as he shares the vision of the Naval Academy and the Naval Academy Athletic Association.
