Preface The 7th stage of the CARIFTA Junior Chess Championships was held in Paramaribo, Suriname from 29 March 2018 3 April 2018. The Carifta Junior Chess Championships are played in the official age categories U20, U16 and U12. Within these official categories there are also the subcategories U8, U10, U14 and U18. Besides the individual prizes, there are also team prices for the participating countries. The Carifta Junior Championships have become a prestigious tournament among the Carifta (Caribbean) countries. Previous Carifta Chess Championships 2012: Trinidad & Tobago 2013: Jamaica 2014: Martinique 2015 : Barbados 2016 : US Virgin Island 2017 : Jamaica 2018: Suriname Participation 8 federations participated in the 2018 Carifta, with a foreign participation of 68 players. The host country Suriname participated with 105 players. In total a participation of 173 players. As there were only 7 registrations for the U20 Female, these players participated, in accordance of the regulations, in the U20 Absolute. The amount of coaches and accompanying persons was: 72. 3
Organization: Organizer: The Surinamese Chess Federation (Surinaamse Schaakbond) Organizing Committee: Frank Lo Kim Lin, Ricardo dos Ramos, Caroline Ramdin Chief Arbiter : IA Aubrey Kappel Deputy Arbiters : FA Ricardo dos Ramos, FA Dewperkash Gajadin, FA Rudie Tjong Tjin Joe Assistant Arbiters, in total : 7 Appeal Committee: Chairman IA Rohan Waithe (BAR). In accordance of the regulation, the Continental President pointed Rohan Waitha as his nominee. The Appeal Committee was composed during the technical meeting and representatives of the 7 other federations were appointed as members. Hotel/Logistics The overseas players/coaches and accompanying persons stayed, due to the size of the overseas contingent, in the organizers officials hotels Eco Resort Inn (Torarica Group) and Mariott. Every day there was bus transportation to and from the tournament venue. During rounds there were shuttle busses available to bring persons to their hotels. Technical meeting/opening In advance to the Opening of the Carifta Championships, the Technical meeting was held with the captains/coaches of the federations. The regulations were reviewed en explained. Also the Appeal Committee was installed, consisting of chairman IA Rohan Waithe (BAR), Mikhail Solomon (JAM), Sandy Razark (TTO), Andrea Marshall (BER), Carlos dos Ramos (SUR), Wendell Meusa (GUY), Pieter-Jan Simonis (AHO), Raymuno Dijkhof (ARU. After the Technical meeting the Opening of the 7 th Carifta Chess Championships could start with speeches of the Surinaamse Schaakbond representative Mrs. Caroline Ramdin, Mr. Luciano Mentowikromo, director of the Ministry of Sport and Youth Affairs and Mrs. Kirti Algoe, representative of the Suriname Olympic Committee. The U12 was played on the ground floor and the U16 and U20 was played on the 1 st floor. 5 games (3 top boards U20 and 2 top boards U16 Absolute) were broadcast live via internet. 5
