Senior Football Championship Valley Rovers 3.12 Mallow 1.12 Valley Rovers defeated Mallow in the preliminary round of SFC at Pairc Ui Rinn on Saturday evening last. The Rovers started the better of the two teams and deservedly led after 10 minutes by 1.3 to 2 points, scores coming from Fiachra Lynch (2 points), Jack Walsh (1 point) and an excellent goal by Eoin O'Reilly. Following a black card to a Valleys defender, Mallow then had a purple patch surging into a lead of 1.8 to 1.4 after 28 minutes before 2 late points from Johnnie Kiely and Fiachra Lynch left Valleys trailing at half time 1.8 to 1.6. A strong start to the second half saw Valleys draw level with points from Fiachra Lynch and Eoin O'Reilly. By the 40th minute Mallow again led by 2 points but again 2 Fiachra Lynch points leveled the match on 44 minutes. A crucial goal by Johnnie Kiely on 47 minutes turned the game in Valleys favour before an outstanding goal from Fiachra Lynch settled the match late on. Team manager Ger Slyne paid tribute to the never say die spirit of the players. When the match was in the melting pot entering the final quarter, their will to win shone through and they deservedly ran out winners. Against a strong physical side like Mallow, Valleys stood up to the challenge well and the work rate of Eoghan Delaney and Jack Walsh up front was excellent. The calmness of the half backs and mid fielders in possession helped create scoring chances particularly for man of the match Fiachra Lynch. Team: Cormac Desmond, Noel O'Donovan, Tim Cummins, Ian Crowley, Darragh Lordan, Tomas O'Brien, Aaron Lyons, Kevin Canty, John Cottrell, William Hurley, Eoghan Delaney, Jack Walsh, Eoin O'Reilly, Fiachra Lynch, Adam Settini. Subs Used: Johnnie Kiely & David Lynch Scorers: Fiachra Lynch 1.8, Johnnie Kiely 1.1, Eoin O'Reilly 1.1 & Jack Walsh 0.2 Page 2 of 6 LGFA under 21 B Championship Valley Rovers Under 21 footballers had a great win over Dromtarriffe last Friday evening winning on a score of 4.12 to 2.8. The game was played under atrocious conditions with valleys playing against the wind and rain in the first half. Valleys started with two points from Daire Kiely before Dromtarriffe scored a fortunate goal. Valleys defended very well however after 15 minutes Dromtarriffe lead by 1.2 to 0.1. Valleys carried the ball well into the wind and scored three goals in the last 15 minutes of the first half to lead by 3.5 to 1.8 at half time. Having played against the elements in the first half this score fairly reflected the outstanding work of the defence in particular Cathy O Dwyer in goal, Rachel O Sullivan at full back and Niamh Hurley at number 5. The second half was very evenly matched with both teams playing against dreadful conditions. Eimear Kiely kicked a number of good points and a peach of a goal from Katie Lynch secured victory for Valleys. We now meet Skibbereen in the county Semi- Final to be played next weekend. Team: Cathy O Dwyer, Carol Cremin, Rachel O Sullivan, Katie Lynch, Niamh Hurley, Sarah O Dwyer, Jennifer Murphy Kate Wall, Grainne Dart O Flynn, Jennifer O Donovan, Eimear Kiely, Daire Kiely Danielle Murphy, Kate Bernard, Alison Murphy Subs: Sinead Dart O Flynn, Aoife Reilly, Cathy O Donovan, Laura Lowney, Laura Brew, Aileen Cremin, Amy Allen & Amy Mulcahy.
