Brown THE LEATHER GLOVE AND MITT INDUSTRY, CANADA 1934 Although one of the smaller Canadian industries, the manufacture of leather Cloves., and mitts is one of cohsiderable importance, in that it provides about 90 per cent of the total leather gloves, gauntlets used annually in Canada The total value of production in 1934 was $3,634,854 - the highest value recorded for any year since 1930. The increase in value over 1933 was $43,236, or 30 per cent, and over 1932, $1,489,307, or 69 per cent0 Working gloves, gauntlets constitute 66 per cent of the total output with regard to quantity, and 53 per cent with regard to value, and the principal item comprises unlined gloves of cowhide, made in sizes for men. The total number of dozen pairs of gloves, gauntlets of all kinds manufactured during the year was 538,636, compared with 448, 774 in 1933 and 365,201 in 1932. Chief among the various kinds of leather used are sheepskin, cowhide, horsehide and muleskin Other kinds used in less quantity are goat, deer, kid and lamb, and pig ekins. The total value of all kinds of leather and other materials used was $1,940,380, compared with $1,402,855 in 1933. The industry is confined to the provinces of Quebec, Ontario, Manitoba and British Columbia. To the total value of production in 1934, Quebec contributed 58 per cent, Ontario, 29 per cent, and Manitoba and British Columbia, together, 13 per cent. Table I, which follows, contains a summary of the principal statistics of the industry for the years 1921 to 1934, and table li the quantity and value of output, by items, in the years 1932 to 1934. In the main tables of the report, information is given, by provinces, for the year 1934, and appended are tables of imports and exports, and a list of the manufacturers of leather gloves, gauntlets.
