Authors Karl Marlantes and Sebastian Junger help make sense of this paradox, while military veterans reveal the truths of combat with unflinching candor. Saturday, November 11 NHK SPECIAL: RESCUING THE LOST BATTALION - THE STORY BEHIND THE "HEROES" @ 2PM During World War II, Japanese-Americans formed the 442nd Infantry Regiment to show their loyalty to the United States. Despite discrimination at home, they served with distinction on the Western Front and would come to be regarded as heroes. In October 1944, the regiment responded to an emergency order to rescue soldiers who were surrounded by German troops in France. Two hundred and eleven men of the "Lost Battalion" were saved but at a cost of hundreds of casualties. Supported by @ 4PM Hunting in Wartime profiles Tlingit veterans from Hoonah, Alaska who saw combat during the Vietnam War. The veterans talk about surviving trauma, relating to Vietnamese communities, readjusting to civilian life, and serving a government that systematically oppresses native people. Their stories give an important human face to the combat soldier and show the lasting affects of war on individuals, families and communities. Tuesdays @ 7PM Join Ann Curry for a new season of dramatic reunions of people whose lives crossed at pivotal moments. View history through their eyes and hear stories of heroism, hope and the forging of unbreakable bonds. November 13 SAVED IN VIETNAM Join Ann Curry as two Vietnam veterans search for the heroes who saved them five decades ago. November 20 SURVIVING THE HOLOCAUST Join Ann Curry as two Holocaust survivors search for those who gave them hope in their darkest days. JULIA LOUIS-DREYFUS: THE KENNEDY CENTER MARK TWAIN PRIZE Monday, November 19 @ 8PM This special was recorded at The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. It features a star-studded cast of Louis-Dreyfus friends, admirers and collaborators including Stephen Colbert, Bryan Cranston, Tina Fey, Ilana Glazer, Tony Hale, Abbi Jacobson, Keegan-Michael Key, Kumail Nanjiani, and Jerry Seinfeld. The evening pays tribute to the humor and accomplishments of the television icon.

Thursday, November 22 @ 2PM Through dramatic re-enactment and interviews from Graham Woodlief, a descendant of Capt. John Woodlief, Karla K. Bruno, author and biographer of Dr. Lyon Tyler, Chief Stephen Adkins of the Chickahominy Tribe, and several other individuals, The First Official Thanksgiving challenges the long-held belief that America's first Thanksgiving was held in Plymouth, Mass., and chronicles how the discovery of the Nibley papers led to a friendly rivalry between Virginia and Massachusetts about who can rightfully lay claim to the birth of America's Thanksgiving holiday.
