DALYELLUP PS NEWSLETTER Edition 2 22nd February 2018 Principals News In Term Swimming Lessons In term Swimming Lessons have finished for the year for our Year 4, 5 and 6 students. Once again, Koombana Bay was a stunning (and cheap!) venue for our students to access. I would like to commend all of our students on their behaviour and effort I have received nothing but praise from all of the instructors involved about how much they enjoyed working with children from our school. Swimming Lessons for our Year 2 and 3 students will be held at the South West Sports Centre from 30th July until 10th August, and for our Pre Primary and Year 1 Students at the same venue from 22nd October until 2nd November. Swimming Carnivals The conclusion of our In Term Swimming Lessons sees us now move on to our Swimming Carnivals. Trials for the swimming carnival were held Thursday 22nd February, with our Swimming Carnival being held at the South West Sports Centre on Tuesday 27th February. Please note that only students participating in the Swimming Carnival will attend this event. From the Faction Swimming Carnivals, students will be selected to represent our school at the Interschool Swimming Carnival. This will be held on Friday 16th March at the South West Sports Centre. Participating students will receive information notes prior to this date. As always, volunteer assistance is always gratefully received if you are in a position to assist with any of these events, please talk to Mr Nicholson. Class Meetings Thank you to the many parents/carers who have attended class meetings in the past fortnight. Regular, consistent communication between the home and the class teacher is a proven strategy to assist children to improve their performance. I encourage all parents to be proactive in contacting their child s class teacher if they have any concerns over the course of the year. PTO
Page 2 DALYELLUP PS NEWSLETTER Principals News Cont. Road Safety The start of the school year is always a good time to reflect on the need for us all to be vigilant with road safety. The beginning and end of the school day are very busy and dangerous times on the roads arounds schools, and all road users need to ensure that they are doing their part to ensure the safety of all children. The following points can assist in ensuring that accidents are avoided: Parents - DO NOT park or drop students off in the staff car park. Bays are allocated for staff only, and this area is used by our bus students arriving and departing school. Children - If possible, park away from the school and walk, as parking is at a premium If using the Kiss and Drop, do not leave your car Drop your speed to walking speed around the school grounds Whatever you are riding (bike, scooter) wear a helmet Use the bike paths across the estate, where possible Always follow the road rules don t race Public Holiday Monday 5th March is the Labor Day Public Holiday. Students DO NOT attend school on this day. Gary Quinn Principal
EDITION 2 Page 3 Cyber-Safety Parents / Caregivers The Federal Member for Forest, Nola Marino, will be visiting our school on Thursday 8th and Friday 9th March to talk to our Year 4, 5 and 6 Students about Cyber- Safety. Nola has been our elected representative since 2007 and is currently the Chief Government Whip. She writes: Do you know where your children are, who they are with and what they are doing? It should be no different when they are online! Working with the Local and Federal Police and being on the Joint Select Committee for Cyber Safety, we have been able to identify what concerns young people when using the Internet. In my presentation I cover the risks associated with social media like Facebook and Twitter, cyber bullying, your child s digital footprint, what it means to be groomed online, your mobile phone and its security weaknesses such as location services, and of course scams. A parent session will be held from 6pm 7.30pm on Thursday 8th March. If you are interested in attending, please book through the school office on 97952999, by Friday 2nd March. This is a growing issue within our society and I urge you to attend if possible. Gary Quinn Principal

Page 5... 2018 FACTION SWIMMING CARNIVAL The 2018 Faction Swimming Carnival will be held on Tuesday 27th February at the South West Sports Centre. Trials for children participating in the swimming carnival will be conducted prior to this. The Faction Swimming Carnival is not for everybody. A relatively competent skill level is required for children wishing to participate in the swimming carnival. Participants must be able to swim in deep water. The swimming carnival is conducted in the deep water section of the 50 metre swimming pool and the program offers 50 metre or 25 metre races, so participants are required to be competent and capable of swimming in deep water (2 metres) and also strong and proficient enough in their swimming to be able to swim at least 25 metres in their chosen strokes. The cost for the swimming carnival program will be $22.00. Because of the nature of risk involved with children around water, a high level of supervision is required on carnival and trial days. If you are able to assist with minor duties and supervision on carnival and trial days, it will be greatly appreciated, and somewhat necessary. Children from Year 3 Year 6 who satisfy the swimming competency criteria are invited to participate in the swimming carnival program. Please note, it is imperative that participants in the swimming carnival are confident and capable of swimming in deep water (2 metres).
