West Virginia is the Class A Affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Shorebirds climbed to 4-2 on the homestand after winning last night. The Shorebirds began the season 4-6, but have a 17-10 record since then. West Virginia has struggled lately. After opening the season 14-3, the Power have gone 5-15 since April 26th and they were just swept over the weekend by the Lakewood BlueClaws. Despite their recent struggles, the Power sport the league s best pitching staff with a 3.09 team ERA. TODAY S OPPONENT: Right-hander Bret Helton gets the call from Brian Esposito in the series finale. Helton was a ninth round selection in the 2015 MLB First Year Player Draft from the University of Utah. Helton s father Barry played four seasons in the NFL and won two Super Bowl titles with the San Francisco 49ers. Helton is scheduled to make his 22nd professional start this morning. He is 3-9 with a 5.14 ERA in his brief career between the West Virginia Black Bears of the NYPL and the West Virginia Power this season. LAST GAME QUICK HITS: Delmarva responded to Monday night s disappointing loss with a wireto-wire win over the Power to even the series. Cedric Mullins finished the contest 3-for-3, making him 6-for-8 in the series. Mullins is second on the team with 10 multi-hit games. Drew Turbin went 2-for-3 and scored a pair of runs in the victory last night. Ofelky Peralta earned his second straight win because of some early offensive backing - the Birds scored four runs on four hits before recording an out in the third inning. Christian Turnipseed saved his seventh game. PLAYER TO WATCH WHO S HOT/WHO ELSE RYAN MOUNTCASTLE SS Ryan Mountcastle has four multi-hit games in his last seven contests. Over his last 15 affairs, Mountcastle has raised his batting average.109 points from.154 to.263 by hitting 21-53 (.396). Even his outs have typically been hit hard as he has turned a corner offensively. WHO S HOT DREW TURBIN Drew Turbin has been very steady at second base this year. He had reached base in 13 straight games until late last week. On Thursday night, Turbin drove in a seasonhigh three runs, and two days ago, he had a walk-off single in the 11th inning. WHO ELSE RICARDO ANDUJAR Andujar has been a silent leader this year. His versatility on defense has been helped him earn more playing time and he s reached base safely in 22 of 25 games.

Jimenez was signed as an international free agent by the Baltimore Orioles in 2011 and made his debut in the Dominican Summer League in 2012. Jimenez has slowly increased his innings load and has put together a nice professional resume thus far. In his career, he sports a 16-15 record with a 3.02 ERA. Jimenez s best outing last year came in his penultimate start when he picked up his first career win as a Shorebird. He fired seven shutout innings against eventual league-champion Hickory, scattering just two hits and allowing no walks. Jimenez was transferred from Aberdeen to Delmarva in mid-august and made four starts for the Shorebirds at the end of last season. This will be his 11th career start in the South Atlantic League. ARSENAL: 2-Seam Fastball, 4-Seam Fastball, Slurve, Split Change LAST OUTING: Jimenez is trying to turn things around after a string of rough starts. In his last outing against Greensboro, the young righthander pitched better and did not take a decision in a 5-4, comeback win on a fog-shortened six inning game. He allowed four runs on three hits to the league s worst offense and gave up one home run. CAREER AGAINST THE BLUECLAWS: Jimenez has faced Lakewood once before. It came in his final start last year on September 6, 2015 and he pitched very well. He took the win by allowing two earned runs on four hits in 5.2 innings pitched. He fanned three and walked three. 2016 SINGLE GAME STATS PRO CAREER GAME HIGHS Low Runs: 0, vs. GBO (4/2) Innings: 7.0, four times High Runs: 10, vs. ASH (5/7) Runs: 10, vs. ASH (5/7/16) Low Hit: 3, three times Hits: 9, vs. SI (7/8/15) High Hits: 8, vs. ASH (5/7) Walks: 5, vs. CSC (5/2/16) Innings: 7.0, vs. GVL (4/26) Strikeouts: 10, vs, DSL DIA ( 14) Most Walks: 5, vs. CSC (5/2) Pitches: 88-57, vs. GVL (4/26/16) Strikeouts: 6, vs. GVL (4/26) Hit Batters: 3, vs. ASH (5/7/16) 2016 MISCELLANEOUS NUMBERS W L ERA GS IP ER Home 2 2 4.78 5 26.1 14 Road 0 1 30.37 1 2.2 9 Day Night 2 3 7.14 6 29.0 23 AVG AB H HR BB SO vs. Left:.178 45 8 3 8 11 vs. Right:.310 58 18 1 8 11 TOTALS:.252 103 23 4 16 22 2016 INNING-BY-INNING Inning ERA IP H R ER HR BB SO AVG GIDP 1 4.50 6.0 7 4 3 0 1 5.304 1 2 13.50 6.0 8 9 9 2 7 5.348 0 3 11.12 5.2 5 7 7 1 3 4.250 2 4 2.25 4.0 3 1 1 0 1 4.231 0 5 0.00 4.0 2 0 0 0 2 3.154 0 6 11.57 2.1 1 3 3 1 2 0.125 0 7 0.00 1.0 0 0 0 0 0 1.000 0 8 9+ 2016 MONTH-BY-MONTH Month Record ERA IP H R ER HR BB SO AVG April 2-1 2.25 16.0 10 4 4 0 4 15.179 May 0-2 13.15 13.0 16 20 19 4 12 7.340 June July August CAREER STATISTICS (INCLUDING 2016) Season Team W-L ERA IP H R ER HR BB SO 2014 GCL O s 0-3 3.98 43.0 43 23 19 0 13 32 2015 Aberdeen 2-5 4.73 40.0 51 21 21 2 9 19 2016 Delmarva 2-3 7.14 29.0 26 24 23 4 16 22 TOTALS 16-15 3.02 256.0 224 111 86 9 80 189 WEDNESDAY S STARTER: Brian Gonzalez will toss the first game of the road trip tomorrow against Lakewood. Game #39 Delmarva Shorebirds vs. West Virginia Power (Pirates) Arthur W. Perdue Stadium MANAGER RYAN MINOR Minor, 42, returns for his eighth season on the Shorebirds coaching staff, and his sixth as the team s manager. In 2015, he led the Shorebirds to 71 wins, the most victories for the franchise since 2009. This is Minor s second stint in Salisbury, having previously managed the Shorebirds for three seasons (2010-12) and spent two seasons (2008-09) as the hitting coach for the Shorebirds. In between, he managed the Frederick Keys (Advanced-A) in 2013. During his tenure as manager of the Shorebirds, the team compiled 302 wins, the most of any Delmarva manager. Minor aided the development of current Orioles, Manny Machado and Jonathan Schoop, who played for the Shorebirds in 2011. Minor, a longtime resident of Salisbury with his wife Allyson and two children Reagan and Finley, enjoyed a four-year run in the major leagues from 1998 through 2001. He spent his first three years with the Orioles and his final season with the Montreal Expos. Minor s playing career is best remembered for replacing Cal Ripken, Jr. at third base on September 20, 1998 when the consecutive games streak of 2,632 came to a close. The Orioles drafted Minor in the 33rd round of the 1996 First Year Player Draft out of the University of Oklahoma. In 1997, he played for Shorebirds and was an SAL All-Star third baseman. He batted.307 with 24 home runs and 97 RBIs. Minor still owns the franchise single season records for doubles (42). Minor also owns a decorated college basketball career. He is seventh all-time in scoring at Oklahoma with 1,946 points. He was selected in the second round (32nd overall) of the 1996 NBA draft by the Philadelphia 76ers. STREAKY DEFENSE: Delmarva s defense has either been superb or costly as the first half of the season nears the halfway point. Of the 29 errors the Birds have committed, seven came in the first two games of the year and 12 have come in the last 12 contests. In the other 23 games, Delmarva has tallied just nine errors and 20 total errorless games. Catcher Yermin Mercedes is the league leaders defensively at his position.
