The Shorebirds earned their first sweep of the season in a rain-shortened two game series against Greenville, and have split the first two games of this series - Charleston took game one, 5-1, and the Shorebirds walked off with a 2-1 win last night. Charleston comes to town red hot. Including yesterday s series opener, the River- Dogs had ripped off six straight wins and have the league s best overall record. The Shorebirds have won nine of their last 12 games and are a win shy of at least splitting the series. Further, the Shorebirds have won four of their first six series this season. This is the only series scheduled between Delmarva and Charleston this season. TONIGHT S OPPONENT: Right-hander Cody Carroll makes his fifth appearance and third start of the season tonight. Carroll has had one bad outing and three above average appearances. He is making his third career start in the South Atlantic League tonight after being taken in the 22nd round of the 2015 MLB First Year Player Draft out of the University of Southern Mississippi. ROSTER OVERVIEW: Delmarva opens the year with each of the Orioles First Round Draft picks last summer in shortstop Ryan Mountcastle and outfielder D.J. Stewart. According to Baseball America, the Shorebirds have five of the top 30 prospects in Baltimore s farm system on their roster. Aside from Mountcastle and Stewart, pitchers Ofelky Peralta (#17) and Garrett Cleavinger (#26), along with catcher Alex Murphy (#27), are among the O s most highly-touted farmhands. RHP s Christian Turnipseed and Ryan Meisinger have both posted solid numbers as well. PLAYER TO WATCH WHO S HOT/WHO ELSE YERMIN MERCEDES C Yermin Mercedes may be the hottest hitter in MILB. Mercedes was just named SAL Player of the Week after going 8-14 with a double, two triples and a homer and nine RBI against Kannapolis. He has multi-hit games in nine of his last 12 efforts. WHO S HOT ALEX MURPHY Alex Murphy has hit safely in 16 of the first 20 games of the season. Both of his 2-run bombs against Kannapolis came at crucial spots, and he also had a pair of 3-run doubles in critical at bats during the opening series against Hagerstown. WHO ELSE CEDRIC MULLINS Cedric Mullins is coming off of one of the most productive games anyone has had all season. He went 4-6 against Kannapolis on Sunday with a double and four runs scored.
