Year of Mercy Pilgrimage St Ignatius Toowong to the Cathedral of St Stephen Distance Directions Photograph 0.0km Start St Ignatius Church, Kensington Terrace, Toowong. Park any vehicles in nearby streets taking note of parking restrictions. If coming by public transport, catch a train or bus to Toowong Village and walk up the gently rising Sherwood Road about 500m and turn left into Kensington Tce and walk up the steeper gradient to St Ignatius on your right. Begin walking by proceeding downhill to Sherwood Road. Cross Sherwood Road, turn right and walk a few steps and turn left into Little Maryvale Street, Walk for 50m and cross Maryvale Street into Okeden Street and proceed uphill to and turn right into Ascog Tce. Walk 500m to Jephson Street 1

0.9km On arrival at Jephson Street turn left and up a slight rise. On cresting the top, on your right you will see the former Toowong Fire Station (see photograph) which is now a Funeral Director s premises. Continue down Jephson Street to traffic lights at Sylvan Road. 1.0km The Toowong Baptist Church (see photograph) should be on your left. Using the traffic lights cross Jephson Street and then cross Sylvan Road. You will now be on the edge of Toowong Memorial Park 1.1km At Toowong Memorial Park (see photograph) Wests Rugby Club and oval will appear in front of you. Turn right and walk around the oval under the large trees. 2

1.3km At the end of the trees, there is a newly constructed path (see photograph) that zigzags to the top of Toowong Memorial Park. Your goal is to reach the top of the hill and the War Memorial Monument (see photograph). 3

1.4km At the War Memorial take time to read the signage (see photograph) and pause a moment to pray for the fallen. If you look towards Mt Coot-tha you will see a big red roof which is Trinity Theological College of Uniting Church of Australia. It is one of the powerhouses of Christian scholarship in Brisbane. 1.5km Proceed down the hill on a dirt track (see photograph) and the Wesley Hospital will come into view straight ahead, slightly to the right. 1.7km At the bottom of a hill, cross the street (Dixon Street) and you will see the McIlwraith Croquet Club (see photograph). Turn right and walk to the intersection with Auchenflower Tce, then turn left into Auchenflower Tce. (Do not walk under any railway lines) Walk 100m to the junction with Mcilwraith St and turn left before proceeding up the hill. 4

1.9km At the top of Mcilwraith St, you will discover Holy Spirit Church, the second Church of the Parish of Toowong. Turn right into Harnett Street and go down the hill to Ridley Street and then turn right into Ridley Street. 2.3km Enter Auchenflower Railway Station carpark and walk past the station office (and thereby crossing over the railway tracks) and exit the Railway Station into Lang Parade. The Wesley Hospital appears on your right and you turn left and walk along Lang Parade with the Wesley Hospital now at your back. You will walk the length of Lang Parade with Dunmore Park (see photograph) on your left. It is also the home of the Toowong Bridge Club. Lang Parade makes a gentle turn to the right (see photograph) and on your left is a number of low rise business office blocks. 5

2.6km Lang Parade ends at Coronation Drive and turn left (see photograph). Now proceed to the John Oxley Centre (an office building) 339 Coronation Drive Leave the footpath by Coronation Drive and enter the pathway of the John Oxley Centre and go down and pass under Coronation Drive, which is effectively a tunnel. If you pass a Shell Service Station you have gone too far. Walking under Coronation Drive you walk by a creek (see photograph). If you have an eye for engineering works, you will see on your right devices to stop flood water going upstream and flooding places such as Rosalie Village.. 6

3.0km 3.1km On exiting this tunnel, you arrive at the Bicentennial Bikeway. There is a crossing point for pedestrians, marked with blue and white paint (see photograph). Cross here to be close to the river, keeping an eye out for cyclists and turn left. As a pedestrian you need to be on the right side of the path as cyclists have the centre and left side of the path. Walk towards the city (downstream) with the Brisbane River on your right. You will see the Park Road Ferry Terminal (see photograph) on your right. 4.0km Continue walking towards the city and go under the Go Between Bridge (see photograph). Immediately after passing the Go Between Bridge turn left and climb the stairway (or longer pathway) to cross the Brisbane River (see photograph). 7

4.1km Walk across the Go Between Bridge (see photograph). While on the bridge look back to where you have come from. Can you see St Ignatius at Toowong? 4.4km At the end of the bridge you are on the southern bank of the Brisbane River (see photograph), walk down the ramp and turn left. Paul s Milk factory will be on your right and proceed towards the river. 8

Walk under the Merivale Street Railway Bridge (see photograph) towards the river and then turn right. Proceed downstream. 4.7km Follow path and walk under the William Jolly Bridge (Grey Street Bridge) through the archway (see photograph). 4.8km Ascend to the Kurilpa Bridge by a gentle circular walkway and cross the bridge (see photograph) 9

5.2km Kurilpa Bridge crosses over busy North Quay and you exit the bridge by entering Tank Street (see photograph). Tank Street meets George Street. Cross over George Street and you find yourself outside the Supreme Court of Queensland. Walk straight ahead to Roma Street. Note the artwork on your right (see photograph). 10

5.6 km On arrival at Roma Street, turn right and walk to Ann Street. On arrival at Ann Street turn left and walk towards Anzac Square (see photograph). 6.0km 6.2km At Anzac Square, walk down the steps, across the Square on the footpath and enter the underpass to cross under Adelaide Street. Walk through Post Office Square food court and climb the steps to Queen Street (see photograph). Cross Queen Street at the pedestrian crossing and walk through the post office building. On exiting the post office building, you reach Elizabeth Street and by crossing this street you arrive at the Cathedral of St Stephen. The Door of Mercy is on the right side of the Cathedral. Total distance 6.39km 11
