Rotary Club of Palos Verdes Peninsula August 22, 2008 If You Missed Us On August 15 HERE COME THE JUDGE, O BRIEN, THAT IS by Liz Fitzgerald Things were back to normal as President Bruce Attig called us to order in the big banquet room with ocean view. Dave Johnsen gave the invocation; Hang Up Moon led us in the pledge; and Julia Parton led the patriotic song a cappella. Greg Sparkman introduced guests: Kim Fork visiting from the Rotary Club of Ocean City, New Jersey; John Evans s guest, Col. Bob Schmidt, retired from the USAir Corps and Tiger Air; and Phyllis Pelezzare s special guest, Inga Lugen. John Polen led, a cappella, a rousing welcome song. Raffle winners were Charlie Elias (third week in a row) and John Evans. Liz Fitzgerald invited all to the Beach Party on Saturday, Sept. 6 at Torrance Beach. She promised games, food and lots of fun for all ages. You ll receive an electronic invitation shortly. President Bruce encouraged us to sign up for the District Paul Harris fundraiser on October 12 at Medieval Times. If you are bringing your kids or grandchildren, contact Bruce ASAP because he is reserving seats up front for the kids. If You Missed Us Last Week, continues needs your help with sergeant-at-arms, greeter, and other duties. Be sure to signup with Phyllis at next week s meeting. President Bruce passed around a Palos Verdes Peninsula News with a large picture of the students who received PVP Rotary scholarships this year. Thanks to Julia Parton, publicity chair, for this great recognition for our club, and Joan Behrens, scholarship program chair. Shuja Oberoi and Kjell Hellberg promoted the Palos Verdes Concours d Elegance, which raises money for our club foundation s community service endeavors. Shuja called for volunteers to help with parking at the Concours, September 21. Kjell urged us to get involved and to sell (or buy) four tickets each to the Concours. John Polen is distributing tickets at the club meetings. Greg O Brien was the program speaker, giving an entertaining and informative craft talk. He told us some very funny stories; next time you sit next to him at a club meeting, ask him about the time he was Concours signs chair, or ask him about presiding over the Joseph and Maria trial. You are in for a treat. Greg is a long-time Rotarian: West Covina and Glendora Rotary Clubs, club president more than once, RI Convention delegate. He, his wife, Carolyn, and three children were very involved in the Rotary program Hands Across the Border for three years taking toys, blankets, and supplies to needy villages and orphanages in Mexico. His children were also Rotary exchange students. Greg has had an interesting career, including serving as environmental attorney for Edison and the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, judge of both Municipal Court and Superior Court. Currently he is with ADR Services, providing mediation and arbitration services in Los Angeles and Orange County.

Calling all Rotarians and their families: It s time to celebrate the fall season with a Food!
