1 November 22, 2010 Fort Wayne Komets in 59th Year! Komets owner David Franke and broadcasting legend Bob Chase caught us up with what's going on with the team this year. Now into their 59th season, the team begins play this year in a new league: the Central Hockey League. To be successful, the team will have to learn to compete against younger, quicker, and more physical teams. The K's have eight championships to their credit, and are Fort Wayne's oldest and most successful home team. In fact, they have become one of the most successful North American hockey franchises since the Franke's acquired the team. They lead all of minor league hockey in attendance. The team is truly a community asset with 80 to 90 former players continuing to call Fort Wayne "home. Come out to the Coliseum and see for yourself that a Komets game is more than a game - it's an experience!

3 GSE Team Members Introduced Tim Gibson, leader of the 2011 Group Study Exchange Team traveling to Bulgaria in April, introduced two of his team members to the club this past Monday. Roxanne Gregg, Director of Upward Bound at IPFW and Leanna Harney, Education Coordinator at the History Center expressed their thanks to the club for the opportunity to travel to Bulgaria. They will have the trip of a lifetime! Bob chase receives Paul Harris Award Our most recent recipient of the Paul Harris award is Bob Chase, legendary broadcaster of the Fort Wayne Komets. Bob was conveniently on hand to receive the award since he was also the speaker for the day. Bob began broadcasting Komets games in 1953 and hasn't stopped since (with 4200 games in bewteeen!). He appeared to be truly moved by the honor, and our community has been enriched by his contributions over these many years. Rotary Cheer Sent Overseas Thanks to Dave Borgen for heading up our project to send five gift boxes to soldiers deployed to Afghanistan from the Indiana Army National Guard. Thanks too to all the Rotary members who contributed the items to fill those boxes! The boxes will be a welcome touch of home to these soldiers who are serving in one of the most remotefeeling and desolate countries in the world.
4 Let the Good Times Roll Again! Rotary International Convention 2011 Steamboat rides along the Mississippi! The legendary French Quarter! Cajun and Creole cuisine prepared by world-class chefs! The festive spirit of Mardi Gras! Lively music that s worthy of the birthplace of Jazz! Enjoy these and much, much more as you Let the Good Times Roll. Again in the Big Easy New Orleans and the Rotary International Convention 2011! Reserve your spot and book now for the time of your Rotary life. It will all be happening May 21-25, It sounds like this may be the last Rotary International Convention in North America for the next several years. This convention may very well be your last chance to attend without a passport and an international flight any time soon! The first Early Registration deadline for the 2011 Convention is December 15th. After this date registration will increase from $300 to $340. You can download a registration form at If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Cindy Gilyard at niakazen@yahoo.com or Kick-Off Dinner A special District 6540 kick-off dinner was held this past Saturday night at of all places Bourbon Street Hideaway Restaurant! Forty-five plus Rotarians from across the district
5 enjoyed a delightful evening of dining and informational entertainment. A special High Five goes out to Cindy Gilyard for acting as our club liaison in arranging this event and also to President Dee and Lisa Waterman for their Tony Award nominated performances as RI Conventioneers! Saturday Night Fever Redux! It was a night of Dancing with the Fort Wayne Stars! And our very own John Peirce was out there competing with the best of them! John definitely made us proud as well as raising a boatload of money for the Carriage House! Though he didn t win the coveted Mirror Ball trophy, John was unanimously voted Best Butt by the entire panel of judges! If you don t believe me, just give him a once over next time you see him! In keeping with the Four Way Test, you can look but no touching! John joins a rare and very select group of Rotarians who are light enough on their feet to compete! (Just a short explanation to go with the top photo Talk about Cool as a cucumber! This is John and his dance partner relaxing before the dance!!!).
