June/July 2009 The SHORELINER The Lakeshore Rotary Club was founded on April 23, 1974, and meets every Thursday at 12:12pm at the Five O Clock Restaurant in Stevensville, Michigan.

STACEY STEPHENS NEW LAKESHORE PRESIDENT STEVENSVILLE: Lakeshore Rotary veteran Stacey Stephens officially took office July 1, 2009, as the 36th President of the Lakeshore Rotary Club. She was inducted at the annual Installation Night on June 25th, as the club also honored out-going President Frank Beltran who presided over one of the busiest Rotary years ever! Thanks to Frank for a job well done, and the best of luck to Bill Galbreath and Frank Beltran photos by Liz Allen Stacey in her coming year. Stacey is joined on the board this year by Dave Ratajik as President-Elect and Program Chair, new club secretary Bob Montross and new club treasurer Bill Vegter. Larry Klett and Dick Berry will remain as co- Membership Chairs (who could let them retire after the banner membership year we ve had!) Special thanks to retiring Club Sec President Stacey with her new board members Dick Stauffer and Club Treas Bill Friend, who both manned 2 of the most time consuming jobs in the club. Special honors awarded at Installation Night included co-rotarians of the year, Larry Klett and Dave Ratajik, The Bill Galbreath award of longevity of service to Lakeshore Rotary was proudly awarded to Fred Schmidt who is often referred to as cofounder of our club. 4 35TH ANNUAL SENIOR CITIZEN NIGHT The LAKESHORE ROTARY Club has been inviting Senior Citizens to Lakeshore High School for as many years as we ve been in existence. This year, thanks to Chair Stacey Stephens, some 700 Seniors were treated to the Lakeshore High School Vocal Concert, featuring the Concert Choir and many other vocal acts. Refreshments were served at intermission. In addition to many door prizes, there were close to 100 flower baskets provided by Hartline s Greenery & Garden Center. The warm weather was appreciated by all compared to the usual blast of early winter during the normal November time frame. 5 LAW DAY 09 Photos by Rick Stone Partnership with Berrien County Bar Association For the second year in a row, Lakeshore Rotary and local attorneys honored the rule of law and special citizens, both young and old, who though actions or their writings, exemplified the ideals set out by our Founding Fathers. Former Lakeshore Rotarian District Judge Paul Maloney gave the keynote address. Rotarian Scott Dienes chaired. [5]

7 LEST WE FORGET A PROJECT INSPIRED BY DAVE RATAJIK AT THE HANGER PHOTOS BY LIZ ALLEN LAKESHORE ROTARIANS manned 3 booths at Tiscornia Beach and the Airport for the better part of two days. Dave Ratajik, Terry Allen and Frank Beltran worked all weekend, and most other Rotarians in the club took shifts. But this event belonged to the veterans, the reenactors and the American Flag. [7]

In 20 years of membership in Lakeshore Rotary, I cannot remember such a flurry of activity. I LIKE IT! Who wants to belong to a club that does nothing? By contrast, new members like Marti Harris and John Gast only know an active and kick-ass club! So where do we go from here? Back to our sedentary ways, time for a rest, pat our selves on the back for 6 months? Or do we get right back in the saddle and prove the last 70 days wasn t a fluke. I challenge our Club leadership and all our members to make the last 70 days the norm and not the exception. Lakeshore Rotary Board Meetings The first board meeting of the new year is set for July 8 at 11:30 am at Papa Vinos in St Joseph.
