ONE MORE CAMP Register for the Vet Med ROCKS Summer Camp! August 7-10 (DATE DEPENDS ON YOUR AGE) is the ONE DAY Vet Med ROCKS camp and will consist of a full day of activities at Kansas State University College of Veterinary Medicine! You will go on a behind the scenes tour of our Veterinary Health Center and learn about careers in veterinary medicine. You will have your mind blown and your interest peaked as you take the opportunity to learn about radiography, parasites, foods per species, and more! CONTEST AND SHOWS The annual All Breeds Junior Dairy show Scheduled for August 16-18 at the Saline Count Expo Center. Entries can be submitted online at http://www.asi.ksu.edu/juniordairyshow or mailed, emailed or faxed to Kevin Snell, Department of Animal Sciences and Industry, 139 Call Hall, Manhattan, KS 66506 by August 10. Along with cattle entries, 4-H members can register for the judging contest, quiz bowl and skill-a-thon.
Horticulture Judging August 18 Did you know Kansas 4-H also has a state 4-H Horticulture Judging Contest? The Kansas Garden Guide, available online, is the primary study guide for this contest. Winners from the contest have the opportunity to attend the National Junior Horticulture Association Judging Contest! http://www.kansas4-h.org/eventsactivities/contests/horticulture-judging/index.html REGISTRATION DEADLINE AUGUST 15 TH!!!! Kansas 4-H Livestock Sweepstakes August 19-20 The 4-H Livestock Sweepstakes event includes the several categories and will be held in Manhattan. The members who will represent Kansas at the national 4-H contest for each of these events will be selected during the livestock sweepstakes weekend. Members may participate in as many or as few of the events as they would like. The deadline to enter is August 1 st. Entries must be made by the Extension Office. Please contact Elly if you are interested in participating or learning more. This is a great weekend to increase your knowledge about livestock. The Kansas 4-H Dog Conference & Quiz Bowl Dog Conference will be October 20 th thru the 21 st at Rock Springs 4-H Center for youth 7-18. All youth must be chaperoned by parent or 4-H leader. County groups will be housed in the same cottage and all dogs must be on leash or kenneled in your room. Owners must pick up and bag after dogs. Only one dog is allowed per youth participant that must be noted on the registration form. Dogs are optional and may be included in the conference to aid in their socialization skills. However, youth do not have to bring a dog to participate. Registration will go live around August 15, 2018. Cost is $115.00 for full-time participants, $70.00 for Saturday only and $50.00 for Sunday only. T-shirts and hoodies may be ordered on-line for an additional cost of $11.00 and $27.00 respectively. Kansas Junior Livestock Show: For the animals nominated in the Spring, the KJLS is October 5-7th in Hutchinson, Kansas. Entry deadline is August 15th. 5-State Fair Did you know you could enter exhibits in the Seward County Fair, under the 5 State Fair Divisions? It s true! Any 4-H member can exhibit projects just like they do at our county fair! Many of our veteran 4-H members take exhibits to the 5 State Fair to serve as a 2nd opinion so they only take the best on to State Fair coming up in September in Hutchison! http://www.fivestatefair.com/is the website that will have all the deets! KANSAS STATE FAIR Kansas State Fair Discounted Tickets: LAST CALL!!!! DUE AUGUST 3 RD @ EXTENSION The Extension Office provides pre-order gate admission and hang tags for Horse Exhibitors. Cost of tickets are $3 for youth, $7 for adults and $4 for senior citizens. Hang tags are only offered to Horse, Dog and Dairy Exhibitors. Please see the included sheet to order tickets. This form is due no later than August 3 rd. Buckle Bonanza Horse Shows HORSIN AROUND! 4-H Horse members have the opportunity to participate in a fall horse show series. This series of horse shows are designed to help 4-H youth improve during the off season for both pleasure and speed events. This year s first show is held in Sublette on August 25 th The next two Buckle Bonanza shows will be hosted in your back yard, also known as the Meade County September 29 th and October 20 th. Horses do not need to be ID d, so if you have a new horse that was not papered for 2018, you can show it. If you questions, please contact Elly. Buckles will be awarded to the top showman in each age division after all shows are completed. Spring Fling-RESCHEDULED Meade County 4-H Horse will be hosting a Spring Fling Horse Show on October 27 th at the fairgrounds. Classes are $5 each. KICKIN IT OFF RIGHT! Record Books/KAP: WORK SHOP AUGUST 19 TH @ 2:00 PM Do you need help learning how to complete a 4-H Permanent Record or KAP? Gatlin and Korben Clawson would be happy to go through this process with you and help you understand how to complete your 4-H record book. They will have samples of their books through all levels of 4-H and will give you tips for each section. Parents are strongly encouraged to attend with their 4-Hers. This record book workshop will be Sunday, August 19th at 2:00pm at the Extension Office Conference Room. Bucket Calf Project Record for Fair counted as a KAP!! By the way! Bucket Calf Project Records that were turned in during the consultation judging during the county fair are in the office. We will take these in place of a KAP! Youth must also turn in a non-competitive record book for this record to count as a KAP. So please start working on your personal page, 4-H story, and permanent record. Youth can also come pick up their Bucket Calf Project Record to edit or make any story/ribbon additions from the county fair.

Operation Christmas Child: Work SHOP AUGUST 18 TH @ 1 PM There will be a workshop to make jump ropes for the Operation Christmas Child boxes on Saturday, August 18th at 1:00pm in the kitchen at the Extension Office. Come have fun with us in making these toys from recycled t-shirts. If you have any clean t-shirts you would like to donate to this cause, please bring them with you that day. Large and extra-large adult t-shirts work best. LOOKING AHEAD Kansas 4-H Discovery Days Task Force National 4-H Week- Oct 7-13 Inspire Kids to Do Discovery Days Task Force Applications are now available. Applications are due October 1 st and applicants should expect to be notified by November 1 as to their selection as a Task Force member. This year the Discovery Days Retreat will be held in December. Heads up! Help celebrate this year s National 4-H Week by joining our movement to INSPIRE KIDS TO DO! 4-youth, parents, volunteers and alumni will celebrate National 4-H Week from October 7 th through the 13 th. Watch coming publications for additional information. NOW is the time for local clubs and county 4-H councils to discuss and make plans for local efforts to promote and celebrate National 4-H week. 48 Hours of 4-H Meade County 4-Hers will once again be hosting a Community-wide Packing Party for Operation Christmas Child as a "48 Hours of 4-H" service project. The packing party will be held at the fairgrounds on Sunday, October 21st at 2:00pm. Please save the date as there will be MANY ways 4-Hers can help. There will also be a workday for the packing party on Saturday, October 20th, beginning at 9:00am and going throughout the day. How can you help with this event now? We need donations of school supplies which are currently on sale. We could use spiral notebooks, crayons, colored pencils, pens, pencils, pencil sharpeners, and zippered pencil bags. These can be dropped off at the extension office or given to the Clawson family. National 4-H Youth Science Day: CODE YOUR WORLD This October, 4-H and Google will launch an exciting National Youth Science Day challenge, Code Your World, which invites kids to get involved in computer science through hands-on doing. Code Your World is a four-part computer science (CS) challenge that teaches kids to apply CS to the world around them through hands-on activities. Developed by Google and West Virginia University Extension Service, it includes a computer-based activity on Google s CS First platform and three unplugged activities that bring coding to life through games and interaction.
