Notes from the Board Columnist: Dave Hinderliter What I would like to know is, who in the world did not pick up after their horse on our barn dance evening? I m telling you, it was a fun evening with a sloppy ending. We had a lot of cowboys and cowgirls at our annual Barn Dance and I think they all brought plenty of food to share. It was a lot of fun seeing everyone dressed up and having fun together. When the evening was finally over and I was walking to my car, I stepped right into a big pile of horse poo - with both feet! I looked down and thought, what would a smart man do? Let me tell you, he would take his shoes off, tie them to the top of the car and go thru the car wash on Monday. Case closed! I am very happy to tell you that the Barn Dance was a heck of a lot of fun. And anything having to do with a horse in the first paragraph is not true. Thank goodness. We have board meetings once a month, and at our November meeting, Tanya told us what she has planned for our special Sundays for the first six months of 2019. This girl is on it!! Does she get all the credit? Well, no - she has volunteers like you and me that help her to make it happen, but she is the captain of that ship and does a great job. What goes with food and thirst? (Well gosh, Dave, I would say drinks.) You are absolutely correct and the reason I bring this up is the fact that one of our volunteers takes care of making sure we don t run out of drinks as well as making coffee just because a couple of members like it. Well now, whom should I M HAPPY TO TELL YOU THAT THE BARN DANCE WAS A HECK OF A LOT OF FUN. Dave Hinderliter we thank? Her name is JOLENE and she sits close to the drink table. Give her a big thumbs-up next time you see her. I would also like to thank our volunteers who collect for the 50/50 drawing, without which we would not have been able to give the Kids Dance Outreach organization another $300 this year. The KDO helps kids dance and become better children thru dance. We donate 50% of our 50/50 profits to KDO to help them with the wonderful work they do. On Sunday December 2 nd, we will once again have our official board nomination meeting with the whole club at the first break. Even though all of the board members have agreed to serve for another term, if you would like to serve on the CDC board, have someone nominate you and we will have an election. As we have said in the past, feel welcome to come to a board meeting to see what we do. Just let a board member know you d like to join us and we will make it happen. On December 16 th we will be having our Christmas Dinner Pitch-in, and I can t wait. The next Sunday, December 23 rd, we have chosen not to have a dance out of respect for those preparing for Christmas (or recovering from Chanukah and Kwanza or whatever else.) December 30 th we will have our last dance of the year and we hope everyone will join us for that pre-new Year s Dance. We will have D.J. Monica Lung spinning the tunes, and if you want to dress up I say, BRING IT ON. President Dave page 2

MY CDC Jean Hayes After retiring at the end of 2014 from her teaching position at Purdue University North Central s Department of Nursing, and her long-standing practice in the home health care industry, new CDC member Jean Hayes moved to Indianapolis to be near her grandchildren. For forty years, Jean had lived in Chesterton Indiana, near Lake Michigan. Upon retirement, she served as caregiver for the two grandchildren during the years her daughter-in-law had been in grad school (working full-time to boot). Her time with the grandkids is now for fun, Jean confides, not a necessity. An avid bicyclist, Jean rides whenever weather permits, rarely exceeding these days, 20 miles on any one trip. Sewing is another of Jean s welldeveloped hobbies. Unusually tall, she began making her own clothes in high school to achieve the needed fit and style. Yet another skill is jewelry-making, working in metal clay to create pieces in silver and bronze. Wherever her retirement travels take her, Jean Hayes is convinced ballroom dancing is going to be part of the mix! Jean has taken a few classes in water color painting and plans to take another very soon. At the end of May of this year, Jean began taking a dance lesson each week at the Irsay YMCA through Indianapolis Seniors. I enjoy Continental Dance Club as well, Jean says, and I need all the help I can get! I appreciate when a partner is willing to take a chance on me and I learn from each dance I attend. Jean really enjoys the waltz, and has gotten comfortable with the rumba. Being fairly new to the Indy area, Jean is not yet fully involved in community activities here, but has volunteered with the Indy Honor Flight organization, traveling with a World War II veteran to Washington, D.C. While not ready for serious snow birding, Jean enjoys travel and just visited Kauai this past month. Wherever her retirement travels take her, Jean Hayes is convinced ballroom dancing is going to be part of the mix! Interviewed by CDC board member Rhoda Israelov page 6
