The foursome has accounted for 52 wins over their four years, and has combined for 1,435 points and 638 rebounds during their careers. lions remain tough on defense Columbia s defense has been among the Ivy League s best over the last three seasons under head coach Joe Jones, and has improved every season. This season, Columbia ranks second in the league in both scoring defense and field goal percentage defense. That 1992-93 squad, led by Buck Jenkins 93CC, Columbia s all-time leading scorer, finished its season with a 10-4 Ivy record and a 16-10 overall mark. The Lions have posted a 7-7 league record in the last two seasons, and four times overall since that 1992-93 campaign. miller s time has come After averaging just 1.5 points and 1.3 rebounds in little more than six minutes per game in three years prior to this season, senior Jason Miller is now averaging 10.0 points and 6.7 rebounds per game in 27.9 minutes per game this season. Named the Ivy League Player of the Week on February 16, Miller ranks in the top 15 during league play in points (11.7, 13th), rebounds (6.5, 4th), field goal percentage (56.7%, 3rd), blocks (0.9, 8th) and offensive rebounds (2.6, 1st). killer jumpers One of the Ivy League s top shooters, K.J. Matsui has made 44 three-pointers so far in 2008-09, upping his total to 166 made in his career, good for third all-time in the Columbia record book. Against Dartmouth last Saturday, Feb. 28, Matsui matched his career with 19 points. He made 7-of-11 from the field, including 5-of-8 from three-point range. Matsui has scored in double figures in five of his last eight games and currently ranks in the Ivy League s top 10 in three-point field goal percentage and three-pointers made per game. three-point fg made in a career 1. NO ORdinary joe Senior co-captain Joe Bova has fought through injuries for most of his career and this season has been no different, although he has been effective when healthy. The 6-7 Bova has proven to be a versatile offensive threat while also cleaning up on the glass. The Scotia, N.Y. native proved he can play with the big boys against Virginia Tech on Saturday, Dec. 20 when he posted 13 points and nine rebounds in the first game of the Aeropostale Holiday Festival at Madison Square Garden. He followed with an eight-point, seven-rebound effort vs. Marist a day later, including a tip-in during the final minute that gave Columbia a three-point lead, helping the Lions to a 63-58 win. dan the man Despite seeing limited action throughout his career, Dan Trepanier has made his minutes count. Earlier this season, he scored seven points in five minutes of Columbia s 75-50 win over NJIT, including a pair of three-pointers. His career best 10 points came in just 16 minutes against Polytechnic on December 29, 2007. give him a pat on the back Despite playing through injury, junior co-captain Patrick Foley had perhaps the best weekend of his career against Brown and Yale on Feb. 20-21. Against Brown, Foley shot 7-of-10 from the field and 3-of-3 from three-point range on his way to a career-best 21 points. Foley also dished out five assists without any turnovers, made all of his free throws and had a steal in the 70-57 Columbia win at Brown. A night later at Yale, Foley led the Lions in scoring again with 17 points, including four rebounds, three assists, two steals and just one turnover. He did this all coming off the bench. Last Friday at Harvard, Foley started, scoring nine points and dishing out four assists. AGHO TOPS AMONG IVY LEAGUE ROOKIES Columbia first-year Noruwa Agho currently leads the team in steals and is averaging 10.8 points per game during Ivy League play, which ranks second among Ivy League newcomers during the league slate. In league games, among Ivy League rookies, he ranks third in assists, second in steals, second in three-point percentage, third in three-pointers made and first in minutes played per game. Last Friday at Harvard, Agho scored a team-high 13 points on 5-of-11 shooting and 3-of-6 from three-point range. NIKO S CASE Despite battling injury recently, junior guard Niko Scott has been a reliable offensive and defensive force for the Lions. Scott is first in three-point percentage during the league slate, hitting 54.2 percent of his shots from beyond the arc. At Harvard last Friday, Scott scored 12 points and hit both of the three-pointers he took. He also made 6-of-9 from the free throw line in 25 minutes. bulger battling Junior guard Kevin Bulger arguably has been the Lions most versatile player this season, handling point guard and power forward duties equally well throughout Columbia s injuryplagued campaign. Last weekend, Bulger filled the stat sheet in each game of the road trip. At Harvard, the Chicago native had six points, four rebounds, an assist and a steal, and a day later at Dartmouth, Bulger scored seven points with five rebounds, an assist, a blocked shot and two steals. Egee pop First-year guard Steve Egee has filled in nicely at point guard, mostly coming off the bench for the Lions. The Philadelphiaarea native had the best game of his collegiate career in Columbia s 73-50 win over NJIT on Jan. 9, scoring nine points with four rebounds and three assists while committing just a single turnover. At Harvard last Friday, Egee was extremely efficient, scoring seven points in 10 minutes against the Crimson. zack attack Sophomore center Zack Crimmins has come on strong recently, becoming a presence in the low post. Crimmins had arguably the best game of his young career on Dec. 29 against Sacred Heart, when he scored six points and pulled down a season-high 10 rebounds in 14 minutes. On Jan. 31 vs. Brown, Crimmins posted a career-high four blocked shots. AMPIM AIRBORNE Sophomore forward Asenso Ampim has also battled injuries throughout the season, but when on the court, he has made an impact during the Ivy League season. Ampim had a solid weekend on the road at Brown and Yale, shooting 50 percent from the field, averaging 6.0 points and 6.5 rebounds in the two games. He was especially efficient at Brown, scoring eight points on 4-of-5 shooting to go along with seven rebounds, a blocked shot and a steal in the Columbia win. penn pals There are a handful of connections between Columbia and this season. First-year Columbia guard Steve Egee, a Philadelphia-area native, is the younger brother of senior guard Kevin Egee. In another link, Lion junior Kevin Bulger was a high school teammate of sophomore Dan Monckton at Glenbrook South outside of Chicago. Columbia first-year Noruwa Agho and junior Darren Smith also each played a postgraduate year at the Peddie School, a prep school in New Jersey. big apple turnover margin The Lions average just 12.3 turnovers per game during the Ivy League season and are turning their opponents over 14.6 times per game, the best mark in the league. The +2.3 turnover ratio also is tops in the league.
LIONS AT levien Entering the 2008-09 season, Columbia had a record of 188-175 all-time at Levien Gymnasium, including a 37-27 mark during the tenure of head coach Joe Jones. Columbia is 7-5 at home this season and 4-1 during Ivy League play. lions roar in europe Columbia took part in a 10-day, four-game trip to Europe in August 2008 and it was a successful trip for the Lions, who posted a 3-1 record against overseas competition. Columbia dropped its first game in Belgium but came back to win three straight to close out the trip. Columbia traveled to Holland, Belgium, France and Monaco during their time in Europe. eric holder 73cc, former freshmen basketball player, u.s. attorney general On February 3, Eric Holder 73CC was confirmed as the next Attorney General of the United States by the United States Senate. Also a 1976 graduate of Columbia Law School, Holder was a two-time football letterwinner and also was a member of the freshman basketball team at Columbia. Holder, previously a U.S. District Judge on the Southern District of New York for 18 years, succeeds Michael Mukasey 63CC, who had been in the cabinet post since 2007. A member of the Columbia Board of Trustees since March 2007, Holder is one of several Columbia alums to join the Cabinet of President Barack Obama, himself a 1983 Columbia College grad. five former lions inducted into second columbia athletics hall of fame class In October 2008, Columbia inducted five Lion greats and one of its all-time teams into its second Athletics Hall of Fame class. John Azary 51CC, Walt Budko 48CC, Alton Byrd 79CC, Bruce Gehrke 48CC and Buck Jenkins 93CC each earned a spot alongside inaugural Hall of Famers Chet Forte 57CC, George Gregory 31CC and Jim McMillian 70CC. The 1950-51 Eastern championship team also was inducted into the second Hall of Fame class, joining the 1967-68 Ivy League championship team, a part of the inaugural class. BENDER ELECTED TO NYC Basketball HALL OF FAME Former Lion basketball standout Lou Bender 32 was inducted into the New York Basketball Hall of Fame in September 2008. Bender, along with Columbia Athletics Hall of Famer George Gregory, helped lead the Columbia teams of the early 1930s to consecutive Eastern Intercollegiate League titles. A three-time All-Metropolitan selection and a twotime All-American, Bender was inducted into the legendary Hall of Fame along with more recent stars, including Kenny Anderson, Rod Strickland, Sam Perkins and former Virginia and Providence coach Pete Gillen. NEW FACES, NEW PLACES Columbia has a number of new faces on its 2008-09 squad, including six first-years in guards Noruwa Agho, Chris Crockett, Steve Egee and Matt Johnson, alongside forward Issa Mase and Blaise Staab. Junior Max Craig, who transferred from Loyola Marymount in the offseason, also joins the team and will be eligible to compete at the beginning of the 2009-10 season. There is also a new face on coaching staff in Michael Murphy, who joins the Columbia staff after three seasons as the head coach at Mount St. Vincent, a Division III college in the Bronx. 2008-09 Captains Joe Bova 09CC and Patrick Foley 10CC are the Lions captains this season. Foley is the first junior captain since Craig Austin 02CC captained Columbia for three seasons, 1999-2000, 2000-01 and 2001-02. MIxed dozen Six familiar names are gone from the Columbia roster, and four of them, Brett Loscalzo, Mack Montgomery, Ben Nwachukwu and first team All-Ivy honoree John Baumann started for four years. However the Lions brought in a six-player class to help fill the void left by the graduated seniors. columbia on the radio in 2008-09 Columbia Athletics announced in September that it has renewed its broadcast contract with local radio station AM 970 The Apple to provide exclusive commercial over-theair coverage of select Columbia men s basketball games. Game 1 Columbia 65, Fordham 62 Game 2 Seton Hall 71, Columbia 50 BRONX, N.Y. -- Columbia rallied from a five-point halftime deficit to defeat Fordham, 65-62, in the season opener for both teams in a raucous Rose Hill Gymnasium. Columbia started out on fire, jumping out to a quick 9-2 lead, paced by five points by Patrick Foley on drives into the paint. Fordham then began to connect from three-point range and ended up hitting seven of its 15 shots from beyond the arc in the first half on its way to a 35-30 halftime lead. The Rams grew their lead to as many as eight, 47-39, at the 12:35 mark, but Columbia slowly inched closer down the stretch. After being forced to the bench early in the first half with two fouls, Kevin Bulger s tip-in of a Lion miss cut the deficit to 47-42 with 11 minutes remaining. With seven minutes left, Columbia got to within three, 53-50 on a nifty drive by Foley, who had a team-high 18 points for the Lions. Fordham still led by five at the six-minute mark, prompting a Columbia timeout. Two possessions later, Miller made good use of the glass on a mid-range jumper, and then cut the Fordham lead to one on a layup, forcing Fordham to call a timeout and sending the Lion faithful behind the Columbia bench into a frenzy. After the timeout, Columbia took its first lead of the game when Bulger deflected a pass on the perimeter and took it coast-to-coast for a layup for a 58-57 Columbia advantage. Miller made it 60-57 on a pair of free throws and after Fordham big man Chris Bethel drained a three to tie with the shot clock winding down, Asenso Ampim went to work. Despite a near goaltending call on Fordham, Ampim collected the offensive rebound and calmly made the putback to put Columbia back ahead by two. Fordham s Trey Blue would tie it on the other end, but Ampim s spin move and layin gave the visitors another two-point edge. After a solid defensive sequence, Foley made one of two free throws with eight seconds left and Fordham missed a pair of long-range three-pointers with the clock winding down as Columbia sealed the win. NEWARK, N.J. Seton Hall used an 11-0 run over the first 5:30 of the second half to open up a 45-27 lead and ultimately pulled away for a 71-50 win over Columbia at the Prudential Center. The Pirates scored the first seven points of the game before Columbia began to assert itself defensively and use a fluid offense to get within four, 21-17, at the 8:30 mark of the first half. Seton Hall s Jeremy Hazell then scored nine points in a 13-2 run that gave the Pirates a 34-19 lead with three minutes left. But Columbia responded, closing out the half on an 8-0 run of its own, started on a three-pointer by Noruwa Agho. Asenso Ampim followed with a dunk after a nice interior pass from Jason Miller and Patrick Foley drove the lane for a contested layup, trimming the halftime deficit to 34-27. The Lions went cold to start the second half, shooting 28 percent from the field in the final 20 minutes. Hazell led all scorers with 21 points while Foley led the Lions with 10 points to go along with three assists. First-year Issa Mase also provided eight points off the bench. Game 3 Columbia 70, Bryant 54 Game 4 UMBC 66, Columbia 52 NEW YORK The Columbia University men s basketball team shot a blistering 55.6 percent from the field, including 60 percent in the first half, as it cruised to a 70-54 victory over Bryant in the opening round of the Tyler Ugolyn Columbia Classic on Friday night at Levien Gymnasium. Junior point guard Patrick Foley controlled the tempo of play all game long and finished with a team-high and career-high 20 points on 8-of-12 shooting and added six assists in the win. Chris Birrell gave Bryant a 2-0 lead with a jumper to start the game, but Foley, who scored the first seven points for the Lions, hit a layup just 12 seconds later and got a steal and a layup on the ensuing possession to give Columbia a 4-2 lead and the Lions never trailed again. After trailing by seven with 10 minutes left in the first, Bryant scored five unanswered points to cut the lead to two, but senior captain Joe Bova hit a three-pointer after the 30-second timeout to extend the lead to five and start a 8-0 Columbia run that pushed the lead to 10 with eight left in the period. Bryant cut the lead to five with 1:29 on the clock, but the Lions closed out the half on a 6-0 run capped by a jumper by Foley as time expired. Columbia led by double digits until Cecil Gresham hit a threepointer at 10:45 to cut the lead to eight. Gresham led all scorers with 25 points. Bova answered with a jumper off an assist by Foley and the Lions went on a 13-2 run over five minutes to put the game away. Jason Miller finished with seven points and seven rebounds, while K.J. Matsui totaled 10 points and three rebounds. Bova finished with nine points and six boards and two assists, while Niko Scott had eight points in 19 minutes. Columbia out-rebounded Bryant 37-24 and finished with 12 assists and 11 turnovers. NEW YORK The Columbia University men s basketball team played hard and fought valiantly but could not overcome a poor shooting night as it fell to UMBC, 66-52, in the championship game of the Tyler Ugolyn Columbia Classic on Saturday night at Levien Gym. Senior Joe Bova and junior Niko Scott each had 11 points off the bench for the Lions (2-2), who shot just 27.4 percent from the floor for the contest. Bova and junior Patrick Foley, who had 20 points in Columbia s victory over Bryant on Friday, were named to the alltournament team. UMBC s Jay Greene had a game-high 22 points en route to tournament MVP honors. Both teams started off slow, with the first points being scored two minutes into the game. K.J. Matsui hit a three-pointer to open scoring for Columbia moments later, but jumper by Justin Fry gave UMBC a lead it would not relinquish. The Lions looked like they would make a run at the three-minute mark when Matsui hit a three to cut the lead to seven, 54-47, but a layup by Darryl Proctor seconds later extended the lead back out to nine and Columbia s shooting woes continued as two missed shots later the Retrievers boasted a 12-point advantage. UMBC shot 39 percent from the floor in the first half to Columbia s 26.9. Greene led the Retrievers with 22 points, 6 rebounds and hit an impressive 10 for 12 from the line. Game 5 Albany 66, Columbia 49 NEW YORK Albany shot 28-32 from the line and outrebounded Columbia 35-21 on its way to a 66-49 victory over the Lions at Levien Gymnasium. Columbia jumped out to a 13-9 lead with 11:55 remaining in the first half on a three-pointer by Joe Bova. From that point, Albany held Columbia scoreless for the next five and a half minutes, taking a 16-13 lead with 6:37 left in the half. A putback by Zack Crimmins trimmed the Lion deficit to a point but the Great Danes closed the half by outscoring Columbia 15-7 to take a 31-22 lead at intermission. Columbia got within seven (33-26) on a three ball from Niko Scott at the 18-minute mark, but it was as close as the Lions would get for the remainder of the game. The Great Danes only scored four more field goals than the Lions (19-15) and did not make a three-pointer (0-11) in the win. Columbia shot 32 percent to Albany s 39.2 percent. Game 6 Stony Brook 62, Columbia 60 NEW YORK Columbia rallied from a 15-point deficit in the second half to tie Stony Brook with over a minute remaining but the Seawolves Chris Martin scored on a putback with 34 seconds left to give Stony Brook the lead. The Lions had a chance to go ahead on their final possession but could not convert as Stony Brook captured a 62-60 win at Levien Gymnasium. After leading by two at halftime, Stony Brook opened the second 20 minutes with consecutive three-pointers to extend its lead to eight, 33-25. The Seawolves eventually built a 45-30 lead with 13:31 remaining on a three-pointer by Muhammad El-Amin. Columbia answered with a 7-0 run but Stony Brook held an 11- point edge (50-39) with 9:14 left in the game. Foley then made a pair of free throws and after a Stony Brook turnover, drove into the lane to convert a traditional three-point play, bringing the Lions to within six, 50-44, with under eight minutes remaining. After the Lions cut their deficit to five with under five minutes left, Niko Scott nailed a three-pointer with a defender flying into his face to make it a 53-51 game. Again, the Seawolves extended their lead to five but K.J. Matsui hit his third trey of the game with under three minutes to make it 58-56. Down 60-56, Jason Miller hit a turnaround jumper in the lane and Scott drained a long jumper to tie the game at 60-60. With less than a minute remaining, Columbia s tight defense forced Stony Brook s Tommy Brenton into an off-balance jumper but the ball caromed straight to Chris Martin, whose layup put Stony Brook back ahead by two, 62-60. After a Matsui miss on one end, Stony Brook s Jonathan Moore missed the front end of a one-and-one, giving the Lions another chance. Game 7 Columbia 84, Wagner 69 NEW YORK Columbia shot 54 percent from the floor and senior cocaptain Joe Bova scored a career-high 16 points as Columbia rolled to an 84-69 win over Wagner in Levien Gymnasium. Both teams started out hot but it was Wagner that held a 19-13 lead with 12 minutes left in the first half. The Lions then went on a 12-0 run, started by Asenso Ampim s putback of his own miss at the 11:04 mark, helping the Lions to a 25-19 lead, a lead Columbia would not relinquish. Wagner cut its deficit to 27-25 with 5:40 remaining in the half, but the Lions made six of their final seven shots of the half to take a 43-33 lead at intermission. Columbia nailed seven of its 14 threepoint attempts during the half. Columbia kept the pressure on to open the second half, leading by as many as 16 at the 18-minute mark. Wagner would trim the Lion lead to eight, 55-47, with 12 minutes remaining, but five points from Bova keyed a 9-0 Lion run to extend the lead back to double-digits as nine Columbia players scored in the victory. We executed well, we rebounded well and played pretty good defense, said Bova after the game. It was a good all-around effort. Bova was one of five Columbia players in double figures as Patrick Foley had 18 and K.J. Matsui, Jason Miller and Asenso Ampim chipped in with 11 points each. Miller and Ampim each posted their second double-doubles of the season with matching lines of 11 points and 11 rebounds in the win. We ve struggled to shoot the ball recently, head coach Joe Jones stated. So we wanted to execute, get the ball inside, offensive rebound and drive more instead of relying on the three-point shot. Game 8 St. Francis (N.Y.) 59, Columbia 57 BROOKYLN, N.Y. A putback with 1.4 seconds remaining by St. Francis John Gooden broke a 57-all tie and gave the Terriers a two-point win over the Lions at Peter Aquilone Court. Despite a 9-0 St. Francis run to start the game, Columbia fought back to take a six-point halftime lead. The Lions forced 14 Terrier turnovers in the first 20 minutes, and after St. Francis scored the first nine points of the game, Columbia held its opponent to 27 percent shooting from the field in the half. The Lions extended their lead to eight on a layup by Kevin Bulger with 17:26 left but St. Francis came back over the next seven minutes to eventually grab a one-point lead on a Rocco Rubino layup with 10 minutes remaining. Columbia again fought back, going on an 8-0 run to regain a seven-point lead, 49-42. Columbia was still ahead by seven with four minutes left when St. Francis went on a 9-1 run to take a one-point lead on a free throw by Stefan Perunicic, 55-54, at the two-minute mark. After a defensive stop, a turnaroud jumper by Joe Bova, who led Columbia with 11 points and nine rebounds, gave the Lions a 56-55 lead with 34 seconds left in regulation. Gooden s layin, when it appeared a Columbia defender stepped in, handed back the lead to St. Francis, 57-56. But an over-the-back call on the ensuing free throw gave Jason Miller the opportunity to tie the game with his first free throw. The second shot caromed off the rim, setting up the final play of the game. Noruwa Agho scored a career-high 10 points to go along with four rebounds. The Lions also outrebounded St. Francis, 41-39, marking the sixth time in eight games Columbia has held an advantage on the glass. Game 9 Virginia Tech 64, Columbia 52 NEW YORK Columbia was within six points late in the game but the combination of Virginia Tech s Malcolm Delaney (25 points) and A.D. Vassallo (16 points) helped the Hokies pull away for a 64-52 win in the opener of the 2008 Aeropostale Holiday Festival at Madison Square Garden. Columbia played arguably its best 10 minutes of the season to open the game, as the Lions held an 18-13 lead at the 9:26 mark on a mid-range jumper by Steve Egee. Virginia Tech then clamped down on the defensive end, allowing just one Columbia field goal during the remainder of the half and closed the half on a 15-2 run. The Hokies led 28-20 at halftime. The Hokies led by 11 with 15 minutes left in regulation but Columbia stayed within striking distance and was within six, 49-43, on a fast-break layup by K.J. Matsui with 8:35 remaining. Columbia still trailed only by six when Jason Miller nailed a turnaround jumper with his off hand to make the score 54-48 with 4:35 remaining. The Lions had a chance to cut their deficit to four with more than a minute remaining but Virginia Tech hit its free throws down the stretch to seal the victory. I think we re a very good defensive team right now and we re doing good things offensively, head coach Joe Jones said after the game. We need to come out with the same effort tomorrow as we did today. Joe Bova led the Lions with 13 points and eight rebounds while Jason Miller had 12 and Noruwa Agho added nine. Columbia played together and they played harder, admitted Virginia Tech head coach Seth Greenberg, who began his coaching career as an assistant at Columbia from 1978-80. I understand that job and Joe Jones has done a great job with that program. Game 10 Columbia 63, Marist 58 NEW YORK Columbia came back from 10 points down in the second half to knock off Marist, 63-58, on the second day of the Aeropostale Holiday Festival at Madison Square Garden. Marist led 31-29 at intermission after a half that saw five ties and five lead changes. Niko Scott led the Lions with nine points during the half. The Red Foxes jumped out to a 10-2 run to start the second half, paced by a pair of three-pointers by Ryan Schneider, who led Marist with 16 points despite being held to 4-of-19 shooting from the field. Marist still led by 10, 51-41, with 11 minutes remaining when Columbia began to make its run to climb back into the game and eventually take the lead. A pair of K.J. Matsui three-pointers sandwiched around a fastbreak layup by Steve Egee brought the Lions within two, 51-49, with eight minutes left. After a stop on the defensive end, Noruwa Agho drilled a three ball from the near sideline to give Columbia its first lead since midway through the first half. Columbia continued to hold on to a slim lead in the final minutes and led 59-58 with 24 seconds left as Marist held the ball with the shot clock turned off. The Lions forced a Marist turnover and the Red Foxes fouled Jason Miller to send the Lion big man to the line for a one-and-one opportunity. Miller calmly sank both free throws to give Columbia a three-point advantage with 13 seconds left. After Schneider missed an off-balance three-pointer, Niko Scott sank both of his free throws with two seconds left to clinch the victory for the Lions. Agho scored a career-best 13 points, including nine in the second half. Scott added 11, as did Matsui, who scored all of his 11 points in the second half. Game 11 Sacred Heart 84, Columbia 79 (OT) NEW YORK Sacred Heart came back from a double-digit deficit in the second half to tie the game with six seconds left in regulation and eventually went on to defeat Columbia, 84-79, in overtime at Levien Gym. The Lions took a 14-point lead on a Joe Bova jumper with just under nine minutes to play. Chauncey Hardy hit a three-pointer on the ensuing Sacred Heart possession to cut the lead to 11 and ignite a 8-0 Pioneer run over a span of two minutes, giving Columbia just a six-point lead seven minutes remaining. The Lions extended the lead to eight with three minutes to play on a layup by Jason Miller, but Sacred Heart got a layup by Ryon Howard with an and-one foul for the old fashioned three-point play. Noruwa Agho, who had a career night for the Lions with 21 points, hit two free throws with 1:48 remaining to extend the lead back out to seven, but the Pioneers made their move with a three by Corey Hassan at 1:36, giving Columbia just a four-point advantage. The Lions missed a three-pointer but Agho got the rebound and was fouled on the play. Agho missed the free throws but Kevin Bulger grabbed the rebound. Niko Scott was fouled on the possession and made both shots from the line to give the Lions a six-point lead with just 52 seconds remaining. Turnovers doomed the Lions down the stretch, with Hardy breaking away for a dunk with 45 seconds left and a consecutive turnovers resulting in a layup for the Pioneers with 27 second remaining. Bulger hit one-of-two from the line to give the Lions a three-point lead with 22 seconds left, but Shane Gibson hit a three with seven seconds left to knot the game at 67-67. Sacred Heart got two free throws from Gibson to open the overtime period but Agho knotted the game again on a jumper moments later. Hassan s three with 3:53 left gave Sacred Heart the lead for good as the Lions traded two-pointers for the next two minutes until a jumper by Joey Henley extended the Pioneer advantage to five. Solid free throw shooting down the stretch iced the game for Sacred Heart. Game 12 Lehigh 73, Columbia 59 BETHLEHEM, Pa. After being stymied early, Lehigh s Zahir Carrington (21 points) and Rob Keefer (20 points) found their grooves offensively to help defeat Columbia 73-59 at Stabler Arena. It was the fifth straight win for the Mountain Hawks. After Lehigh scored the first basket of the game, Columbia scored 17 unanswered points to take an early 15-point lead. The Mountain Hawks slowly climbed back into the game, eventually taking a 24-23 lead with four and a half minutes left in the first half. Lehigh led 31-25 at halftime. Columbia hung tough early in the second half, tying the game at 36 with 14:30 left in the game. A K.J. Matsui three ball with 13:25 gave the Lions their first lead of the second half at 39-38 but Lehigh responded with a 7-0 run to regain control of the game. Lehigh extended its lead to 62-51 with 5:40 remaining and held Columbia at bay the rest of the way. Joe Bova and Niko Scott led the Lions with 10 points each in a balanced scoring attack. Game 13 American 62, Columbia 50 WASHINGTON, D.C. Garrison Carr scored 15 of his 23 points in the second half, all on three-pointers, as American pulled away from Columbia in the second half for a 62-50 win at Bender Arena. The game was tight throughout the first half as American led 26-23 at halftime. The score remained close early in the second half as neither team took larger than six until the 15-minute mark. After leading by six, American increased its advantage to 42-32 with just under 12 minutes remaining, and its lead would remain in double figures for the remainder of the contest. The Eagles led by as many as 21 points with 5:52 remaining, but a group paced by first-years Noruwa Agho (game-high 11 points), Steve Egee and Matt Johnson were able to whittle the lead down to the 62-50 final. Game 14 Columbia 73, NJIT 50 NEW YORK -- Columbia closed out the first half on a 19-6 run over the final seven minutes to take a 43-23 halftime lead. The Lions would cruise the rest of the way in a 73-50 victory over NJIT to close out the non-conference portion of their schedule. After NJIT scored the first four points of the game, the Lions went on an 8-0 run to take the lead for the remainder of the game. Columbia took a 20-8 lead with 12 minutes remaining on a layup by Steve Egee, who had nine points, four rebounds and three assists in 20 minutes. NJIT came back to get within seven points, 24-17, at the 7:28 mark but the Lions outscored NJIT by 13 to close out the half, punctuated by a Niko Scott three-pointer as time expired in the first half. Game 15 Cornell 71, Columbia 59 NEW YORK Despite a five point lead at the half, Columbia could not sustain their momentum, and fell to defending Ivy League champions Cornell, 71-59, in the Ivy League opener for both teams. The Lions got on the board first, with a jumper from senior Jason Miller. But the Big Red answered with a three pointer from Louis Dale, and maintained a lead from there. Despite four points from junior guard Pat Foley, Cornell managed to stay ahead of the Lions, taking a 16-11 lead with eight minutes to go, their biggest lead of the half. Sparked by a hard three-point foul on junior Niko Scott, Columbia went on a 5-0 run to take a 17-16 lead, a lead they would not relinquish for the rest of the half. The Lions had their biggest lead of the period, when first-year Steve Egge scored a layup, and followed it with a three pointer forty seconds later, to put Columbia up 25-20. Though Cornell answered with a three from Dale, the Lions were able to stay ahead with a layup by Scott and a foul shot by first-year Noruwa Agho, giving them a 28-23 lead heading into the break. Foley and Dale led all scorers in the first half, with nine points each. The Lions came out in the second half ready to hold on to their lead. A layup and foul for Scott gave them a 31-27 advantage, but Cornell answered with a layup by Ryan Wittman, a block on defense, and layup by Geoff Reeves to tie it up at 31-31 with 17:11 left in the game. The two Ivy foes continued to trade blows for the next minute, as the lead changed hands three times, before it was 36 all. Miller had a layup at 14:55, to put Columbia up 38-37, in what would be their last lead of the game. Field goals by Dale and Alex Tyler gave Cornell the 41-38 lead, and the Big Red never looked back. With 13 minutes remaining, Cornell went on an 11-0 run, led by first-year Chris Wroblewski. Wroblewski had five points in two minutes, helping the Big Red take a 55-40 lead, their biggest of the game. Agho helped cut the lead to ten, 67-57, with three minutes left, but Cornell managed to hold on, taking the 71-59 lead. Game 16 Cornell 83, Columbia 72 ITHACA, N.Y. For the second straight week, Columbia stood toe to toe with the defending Ivy League champions. On the Big Red s home court, the Lions hung tough for 40 minutes, but it was not enough as Cornell captured an 83-72 victory at Newman Arena. Noruwa Agho scored a career-high 24 points in the loss, while Asenso Ampim had 10 points and six rebounds in his first game since December 3. Although Cornell led just 7-6 after four minutes in the game, the Big Red jumped out to a 29-15 lead with 8:27 left in the first half before Columbia stormed back. A pair of Noruwa Agho three-pointers and a fast-break layup quickly cut the Lions deficit to six at 33-27. The Lions got even closer, 36-32, on a Steve Egee three ball and had the opportunity to cut the Cornell edge to two points but the Big Red closed out the half on a 10-4 run to take a 46-36 lead at halftime. Columbia cut the deficit to 52-43 on a Zack Crimmins putback at the 16:36 mark, but would turn cold from the field as Cornell went on a decisive 12-2 run over the next seven minutes until Niko Scott nailed a trey with nine minutes left to make it 64-48 Cornell. The Lions then went on a run, cutting the Big Red lead to 69-60 on back-to-back three-poitners by Agho and K.J. Matsui with six and a half minutes remaining. Cornell s Geoff Reeves would hit a three-pointer from the near corner on the Big Red s next possession to increase their lead back to 12, and the Lions would get no closer than 10 points the rest of the way. The difference in the game ultimately came at the foul line, where Cornell made 30 of 36 from the stripe. The Lions made 12 of 23. Game 17 Columbia 53, Yale 42 NEW YORK Sparked by a raucous Levien Gym crowd, Columbia outscored Yale 35-15 in the second half to capture its first Ivy League victory of the season, 53-42. The first half was a grueling, hard-fought battle that mirrored the entire game. Yale held a slim lead throughout much of the first 20 minutes, but when Jason Miller scored on an interior layup with 5:41 left in the half, the Bulldog lead was just 17-16. Yale closed out the first half on a 10-2 run and hit 48 percent of its shots in the half to hold a 27-18 halftime lead. With the crowd behind them to start the second half, Columbia came out with renewed energy and vigor. After Travis Pinick s layup made it 29-20 at the 18-minute mark, Columbia went on an 8-0 spurt, sparked by a thunderous, left-handed dunk by Asenso Ampim to cut the Yale lead to a point. As the minutes went by midway through the second half, Columbia appeared primed to tie or take the lead and ultimately tied it on a three-pointer by Niko Scott from the top of the key, which knotted the score at 35 with 9:45 remaining. Two free throws and a Pinick jumper gave Yale a four-point lead with 7:33 remaining, but the Lion defense would make its toughest stand of the season, holding the Bulldogs scoreless for nearly seven minutes from that point to make its decisive run. Columbia would tie the game on consecutive hoops from Miller, who posted his fourth double-double of the season with 16 points and 11 boards. Two possessions later, Patrick Foley, who scored 12 points in 15 minutes, drove the left side for a layup in traffic to give Columbia the lead for good at 41-39. A pair of fast-break buckets from Ampim, including another rimrattling dunk, pushed the lead to six as Columbia s defense dug in even more. The Lions hit six free throws in the final 33 seconds to seal the win. Game 18 Columbia 65, Brown 59 NEW YORK For the second straight night, Columbia rallied in the second half with a stellar defensive effort to defeat Brown, 65-59, in front of a spirited crowd on Greek Spirit Night at Levien Gym. The Lions evened their Ivy League record at 2-2 with the win. Neither team led by more than six points in the first half, although Brown led most of the way in the first 20 minutes. Jason Miller s layup gave the Lions a 20-19 lead with 4:38 left in the first half, but a three-pointer by Brown s Adrian Williams as time was running out gave the Bears a 29-28 halftime advantage. Down 37-35 with 16 minutes remaining in the game, Patrick Foley scored the next five points for Columbia in a run that gave the Lions the lead for good. Columbia s decisive 24-9 run eventually gave the Lions a 59-46 lead on a Niko Scott three-pointer with five minutes left. The Lions then got into foul trouble and Brown was able to string together a 10-1 run to make the Levien Gym faithful nervous, cutting the Lion lead to 60-56. After a pair of defensive stops, Foley then sank four straight free throws to give Columbia an eight-point lead, 64-56. Peter Sullivan s three-pointer with 11 seconds left cut the lead to five but that was as close as Brown would get. Columbia held Brown to 29.6 percent shooting in the second half while hitting on 52 percent of its shots in the half. Miller led Columbia in scoring for the second straight night, with 14 points and five rebounds. Scott added 12 and Foley had 10 points and four assists for the Lions. Sullivan led all scorers with 18 points for Brown. Columbia committed a season-low eight turnovers, while dishing out 15 assists as a team. Game 19 Columbia 74, 63 PHILADELPHIA Columbia used a hard-fought defensive effort and a monster game from Jason Miller (21 points, 10 rebounds) to defeat, 74-63, at the Palestra for its third straight win, moving to 3-2 in the Ivy League, and within a game of first place. In a first half that featured five ties and five lead changes, Columbia s K.J. Matsui came off the bench to hit a pair of three-pointers to give the Lions an early 14-10 lead. After Matsui hit his third trey of the half to give Columbia a 23-17 advantage, scored eight straight, capped by a Rob Belcore three-pointer to push to a 25-23 lead. With the game tied at 30, Niko Scott nailed a three ball from the corner on the Lions final possession of the half to give his team a 33-30 lead at intermission. The game stayed close throughout the second half. Every time either team made a run, the other team absorbed the blow and came back. Miller converted a conventional three-point play at the 14-minute mark to give Columbia a 43-35 lead. went on another 7-0 run to get to within a single point with 11:30 left, but Patrick Foley, who scored all of his 10 points in the second half, hit a difficult mid-range jumper to push the Columbia lead back to three at 45-42. The Columbia lead remained at three points when Noruwa Agho nailed an open triple and came back on the next possession to hit a two-point jumper to push the Lion advantage back to eight. The Quakers again pushed back, cutting their deficit to two on a Jack Eggleston jumper with 6:32 remaining that prompted a Columbia timeout. Miller converted a layup out of the timeout and two minutes later, connected on another and-one three-point play to give the Lions an eight-point edge. Columbia would continue to lead by at least six the rest of the way as the Lions made 12 of 14 free throws in the final three minutes. Columbia was unable to sustain an offensive flow as Princeton improved to 4-0 in the Ivy League with a 63-35 win at Jadwin Gym on Saturday night. After shooting 51 percent from the field a night before at, Columbia was stymied by Princeton s defense in the first half. The Lions missed their first 14 shots from the field before Patrick Foley converted on a transition layup at the 10:55 mark. The good news for Columbia early was that the Lion defense held Princeton to just nine points during that span, so Foley s layup cut the deficit to 9-2. The Lions failed to find their stroke throughout the half, while Princeton hit 43 percent of its first-half shots to take a 27-11 lead at halftime. The Lions shot a slightly better percentage in the second half but not enough to put a dent in the Princeton lead. The Tigers ultimately hit 44.7 percent of their field goals and limited their turnovers to just four in the second half. Ten different players scored for the Lions, led by five from sophomore Zack Crimmins. Zach Finley led Princeton with 11. K.J. Game 21 Columbia 65, Dartmouth 52 NEW YORK Ahead by just two at halftime, the Lions made their first four shots of the second half to open up a double-digit lead and ultimately held off Dartmouth for a 65-52 victory in front of another boisterous student section at Levien Gym. Dartmouth started the game shooting well from the field, and jumped out to a 21-13 lead on a Jabari Trotter jumper at the eightminute mark. Columbia then clamped down on the defensive end and outscored Dartmouth 11-3 over the next four minutes, sparked by six points by Noruwa Agho, to tie the game at 24-24. With the Levien student section starting to come alive, Columbia took a 29-27 halftime lead when K.J. Matsui pump faked a Dartmouth defender and nailed a lean-in three-pointer as time expired in the first half. Columbia opened the second half on a 17-2 run, including six points each by Agho and Jason Miller, to take its largest lead of the game, 46-29, with 14 minutes remaining. Dartmouth then went on a run of its own, an 11-0 spurt, paced by three consecutive three-pointers. With the Columbia lead at 46-40 with 10 minutes left, Agho drove the lane for a contested layup to push the Lion lead back to eight. The Lions would lead by at least eight points for the remainder of the game. Both teams started out hot from beyond the arc in the first half. Harvard nailed five from downtown, while Columbia made six, including five from K.J. Matsui, who scored all of his season-high 15 points in the first half. Matsui s last triple gave the Lions a 34-33 halftime lead. Harvard outscored Columbia 14-3 in the first five minutes of the second half, to take its largest lead of the game, 47-37, with 15 minutes remaining. The Lions cut the lead to single digits when Jason Miller, who totaled 19 points and eight rebounds for the second straight night, converted a traditional three-point play to make it 47-40. Harvard still led by eight points though, 55-47, on a pair of free throws at the 6:21 mark by Drew Housman, who had 11 points and six assists. It was at that point that the Lions mounted their comeback, scoring nine unanswered points while switching to a 2-3 matchup zone that befuddled the Crimson offense. Noruwa Agho nailed two foul shots to tie the game at 57 with 2:19 left and then sank one of two with 50 seconds to give Columbia its first lead since the beginning of the half. Harvard s Jeremy Lin, who had 19 points to lead the visitors, then drew a foul on the next possession and calmly sank two free throws to give the Crimson a one-point lead, setting the stage for Columbia s final possession. With nine seconds left, Bulger s jumper came up short, but in a fight for the loose ball, the Crimson knocked the ball out of bounds, giving the Lions another chance with seven ticks left on the clock. On the inbounds, Bulger received the inbounds pass, drove into the lane and floated a jump shot over the outstretched arm of a Harvard defender to give the Lions the 60-59 lead. Game 23 Columbia 70, Brown 57 PROVIDENCE, R.I. Led by a career-high 21 points from junior Patrick Foley and a solid defensive effort, Columbia moved to within a game of first place in the Ivy League with a 70-57 road win over Brown at the Pizzitola Sports Center. Foley had 12 of his 21 points in the second half, including a pair of three-pointers in the half, to go along with five assists without a turnover in 27 minutes. Noruwa Agho also had a terrific second half, scoring 14 of his 17 points in the final 20 minutes. Brown led, 17-10, at the 9:25 mark in the first half when Columbia s offense began to click. Niko Scott drilled a 14-foot jumper, sparking a 17-2 run that spanned nine minutes in the second half. The Lions led 27-21 at intermission. The Lions scored the first six points of the second half, started by consecutive baskets by Asenso Ampim, who had a solid performance with eight points and seven rebounds. Columbia led by double figures for much of the half, until Brown went on a 7-0 run to make it 45-40 on a Peter Sullivan jumper with nine minutes left. But after a Columbia 30-second timeout, Agho came right back to nail a three ball to push the Lion lead back up to eight. Brown cut the deficit to six again, but five points from Foley and another Agho three-pointer gave the Lions a 56-44 lead with 6:44 remaining. The Bears would get within nine at 62-53 with 3:33 left, but a pair of baskets by Agho gave the Lions a 13-point cushion and Jason Miller put the exclamation point on the win when he deflected a pass at the top of the key and went coast to coast with a dunk to all but seal the win for Columbia. Columbia s bench, paced by Foley and Matsui, outscored Brown s bench 45-1. It was Columbia s first win at the Pizzitola Center since February 26, 2000. Game 24 Yale 57, Columbia 49 NEW HAVEN, Conn. Ahead 41-32 with 14 minutes remaining, Columbia gradually allowed Yale back into the game. The Bulldogs made up the difference at the line and with center Ross Morin, who scored 12 of his 16 points in the second half, leading Yale to a 57-49 win over Columbia at the John J. Lee Amphitheater. Yale scored the first six points of the game and led 14-4 at the 12-minute mark of the first half. Columbia fought its way back into the game, ultimately tying the score at 22 on a nice running jumper off the window by Patrick Foley. The Lions then took their first lead of the half, 24-22, when Kevin Bulger floated a jumper in the lane with his left hand. Columbia led 27-25 at halftime. Columbia started out the second half on a 10-4 run over the first 2:30, taking a 37-29 lead that prompted a Yale timeout. The Lions led by as many as nine twice early in the second half, holding a 41-32 lead when Steve Egee fed Jason Miller for a 10-foot hook shot off the glass with 14 minutes left in the game. Yale scored 10 unanswered points over the next seven minutes, holding the Lions without a field goal during that span. The Bulldogs took their first lead of the half, 42-41, on a Ross Morin layup at the 8:35 mark, but Niko Scott came back down the court with a 12-foot jumper to give the Lions back a one-point lead. Game 25 Harvard 72, Columbia 63 CAMBRIDGE, MASS. Columbia staged a late second half rally, but Harvard shot a blistering 60 percent in the second half and rebounded its way to a 72-63 victory at Lavietes Pavilion. First-year Noruwa Agho led the Lions with 13 points, while Niko Scott added 12. Columbia shot 44 percent in the first half, but Harvard controlled the boards with a 22-10 advantage and an impressive 11 offensive rebounds en route to a 29-27 lead at the break. Columbia opened the second period with free throw by Scott and a jumper by Patrick Foley, and Agho hit a three to give the Lions a 33-32 lead with 17 minutes left to play. After a timeout by the Crimson, a jumper by Jeremy Lin initiated a 20-6 run over the next six minutes to extend the Harvard lead to 51-39. Trailing by 15 with just under eight minutes to play, the Lions put together a rally of their own, out-scoring the Crimson 11-2 on free throws by Kevin Bulger and Foley, a three by Agho and two jumpers by K.J. Matsui, cutting the lead to six, 58-52 with 4:21 remaining. Perhaps foreshadowing the final outcome, the Lions play tough defense on the ensuing possession only to have Oliver McNally hit an off-balance desperation jumper as the shot clock expired to extend Harvard s lead back out to eight and thwarting Columbia s run. The Lions did not get closer than seven points the rest of the way. Harvard shot 60 percent in the second half, but totally controlled the boards 39-27 for the game. The Crimson had more offensive rebounds in the first half (11) than Columbia totaled for the game (6). Four Harvard players finished in double figures with Keith Wright and Jeremy Lin each totaling 14. Agho and Scott had 13 and 12 respectively, while Foley finished with nine points and four assists. Steve Egee had seven points in 10 minutes in the loss. Game 26 Dartmouth 67, Columbia 53 HANOVER, N.H. Despite 19 points each from K.J. Matsui and Jason Miller, Columbia lost to Dartmouth 67-53 at Leede Arena. The game came down to one run. Columbia led by eight early in the second half, but a layup b y David Rufful at 17:51, initiated a 25-5 Big Green run over eight minutes to give Dartmouth a double-digit lead they would not relinquish. At the break Columbia held a 31-25 lead thanks to a hot hand, hitting 59.1 percent (13-of-22) of its shots, including 4-of-9 from threepoint range. Matsui led all scorers in the first half with 13 points, draining 3-of-4 from downtown. The first points in the second period came from Kevin Bulger on a layup, but Dartmouth scored the next eight points to kick-start the winning run. A pair of Miller free throws briefly gave the Lions the lead again, only to have the Big Green rattle off 13 straight points. Alex Barnett scored the first nine of those points with a three-point play followed by consecutive three-pointers. Columbia totaled just five field goals in the second half, shooting a dismal 20.8 percent (5-of-24). Dartmouth shot 40.7 percent (11-of- 27) for the period but went 18-of-20 from the line in the second half alone. Overall, the Green shot 89.3 percent (25-of-28) from the line, while Columbia went 11-of-17. Dartmouth outrebounded Columbia in the second half, grabbing 24 compared to 15 for the Lions. Both teams had 12 caroms at the break. While Barnett was 7-of-12 from the floor, including 3-of-7 from long range, and 5-of-5 at the line to account for his 22 points, Dixon did not miss a shot all night with four field goals, a three-pointer and four free throws. High School Head Coach (1993-94) Joe Jones aimed to build a solid foundation for a successful winning program when he took the reins of the Columbia men s basketball team in April of 2003. While on his mission, he redefined Columbia Basketball. It happened in stages, and it started with commitment and family. With unrivaled enthusiasm and passion, Jones has brought new meaning to the words Columbia Basketball, causing the foundation to grow from the steady stream of alumni and fans that support the Lions with every jump ball. Now, the next level is approaching - success. Entering his sixth season, Joe Jones accomplishments continue to accumulate and he is nowhere near finished. Over the past four years, Jones has compiled the most wins (53) of any Columbia coach over that span since the 1980-81 season. Jones first recruiting class helped lead to the way to that mark, thanks in large part to two-time first team All-Ivy Leaguer, John Baumann. Baumann became the 23rd player in school history to score 1,000 points, essentially over three and the Lions swept two Ivy home weekends for the first time in two years. Jones came to Columbia after serving as an assistant at Villanova for six seasons. Prior to his departure he was responsible for recruiting, game scouting and on-court teaching. During Jones time at Villanova under head coaches Steve Lappas and Jay Wright, the Wildcats advanced to postseason play in five of the six seasons and compiled a 105-83 record. Prior to arriving at Villanova in 1997, Jones was an assistant under Wright at Hofstra from 1994 to 1997. In 1994-95, his efforts contributed to Hofstra s recruiting class that was ranked first in the America East Conference. Despite leaving Hofstra in 1997, his recruiting efforts assisted in laying the groundwork for the Pride s rise in American East Conference prominence that culminated in a three-year record of 72-22. Wright, who later joined Jones at Villanova, brought the Wildcats to even greater prominence in the Big East. The Ronkonkoma, N.Y. native helped form Villanova basketball during his tenure. In 1999, Eastern Basketball recognized Jones as one of the top recruiters in the nation. His final Wildcat recruiting class was ranked among the nation s best. Jones has been featured prominently on television around the New York metropolitan area and was a guest on halftime of CBS Sports March Madness On Demand during the 2008 NCAA Tournament. He also has been a featured speaker at various youth clinics along with clinics offered to coaches on the scholastic and high school levels. Jones got his start coaching on the prep level, serving as head coach at Long Island s Comsewogue High School from 1993 to 1994. The Long Island native was a four-year letterwinner at the State University of New York at Oswego. He graduated in 1987 with a degree in communications and earned his master s degree in counseling in 1989. Jones graduated from Half Hollow Hills West High School in Dix Hills, Long Island, N.Y. He and his wife, Kristen, have two children daughter, Sydney, and son, Joe Jr. The family lives on Morningside Heights, close to the Columbia campus. 33
