5 Season Outlook It may be just a number to some people. But to Head Coach Sydney Johnson, it s a number that shows progress. It s a number that shows growth. And most important, it s a number that shows success. Last year, the Fairfield University men s basketball team won 19 games and advanced to the postseason for the third time in Coach Johnson s five years at the helm. While the win total was one short of the coveted mark of 20 victories, the number 19 was something that only happened 10 times in the last 50 years of Fairfield basketball. You want to talk about progress? How about the fact that the Stags enjoyed a topfive turnaround in Division I basketball by going from seven victories in to 19 wins in And those results also garnered Fairfield another berth in the CollegeInsider. com Tournament (CIT). Fairfield used a fast-paced, quick-strike offense that has earned this team a nickname of The Running Stags. It s a moniker of which Coach Johnson and the team is proud as it defines how this program plays each and every night. The Stags averaged just over 75 possessions per game which ranked among the top 30 programs in the nation, and accounted for Fairfield s offensive output to rise from 59.5 points per game in to 76.4 points per contest a year ago. But in the college game, it s all about replenishment as seniors graduate and leave holes in a team s game plan. Fairfield is no different as the team must find a way to replace one of the program s most prolific scorers. Marcus Gilbert netted 1,661 points over his fouryear career and earned All-Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) honors as a junior and senior. He led the team in scoring with 16.7 points per game while his 5.2 rebounds per game was just 0.3 off the team lead set by Jonathan Kasibabu (5.5 rpg). To illustrate Gilbert s talent, one only needs to point to his signing a professional contract in Italy. He joins former Stags Rakim Sanders and Derek Needham who are also playing in the Italian League. In addition to Gilbert, the Stags must find a way to pick up the slack from the rest of last year s senior class, namely Coleman Johnson, Scott King Jr., and Mike Kirkland Jr. The trio combined for six points and six rebounds per game, and gave the coaching staff options on both offense and defense. Fortunately, Fairfield will rely on the experience of graduate student Amadou Sidibe, who was part of the Class of 2016 but missed the season due to injury. He will be back in uniform this year, providing a way for Coach Johnson to make up some of the numbers vacated from last year s seniors as well as provide much needed experience on a team that started as many as three or four underclassmen every game. The Stags will also benefit from the return of seniors Steve Smith and Andrew Leone, both of whom have executed their roles rather well over the last few seasons. Smith provides Fairfield with another sharpshooter from three-point range, possessing longrange shooting capability that extends well beyond the three-point arch. Leone has been a solid reserve when he is called upon by the coaching staff, showing the court sense, the ball-handling and shooting abilities to make contributions late in the game At the heart of those starting underclassmen were guards Jerome Segura and Tyler Nelson, who provided an offensive heartbeat with their ability to create and finish scoring opportunities. Segura ended the year with five assists per game which ranked third in the MAAC. His assist total reached 160 which ranks 10th on Fairfield s single-season assists list.

6 Season Outlook Nelson continued to build his reputation for as an outside shooter, placing 11th in the MAAC with two three-pointers per game. He led the conference in free throw percentage at.880 (147 of 167) which was the second-highest single-season total in school history. The guard was second only to Gilbert in scoring average at 16.0 points every forty minutes, which ranks first among Fairfield s returning players.. Jared Harper is also a member of the junior class and looks to return to the lineup after missing nearly the entire season. The guard made his season debut in the team s CIT game against New Hampshire, playing one minute without any statistics. Harper s play at the guard position offers dependable play both offensively and defensively to his teammates. A bulk of those underclassmen starts were collected by the freshmen class which was comprised of Curtis Cobb, Jerry Johnson Jr., Jonathan Kasibabu, and Matija Milin. The foursome represented the top scoring freshmen class in the MAAC by averaging 33.2 points per game and four of Fairfield s top seven scorers in Cobb was the only rookie in double figures for the Stags, netting 10.8 points per game. Johnson and Milin were closed to double digits but finished the campaign with a 8.3 and 8.2 scoring average, respectively. Kasibabu was the team s top rebounder with 5.5 caroms per contest in addition to his 5.9 points per outing. Johnson presented explosive offensive tendencies as a reserve through his ability to go to the basket or score from outside. He ranked eighth in the MAAC statistical rankings for three-point field goal percentage, netting just over 40 percent of his attempts from the arc. Fairfield brings another talented class to the program with the addition of the freshmen class. Olivier Cadieux, Deniz Celen, and Nemanja Zubec comprise the rookie class while redshirt-sophomore Thomas Nolan will also make his debut with the Stags after sitting out the campaign. Cadieux hovered around the 20-point mark as a senior and the 16-point mark as a junior, helping him rank among the league leaders in scoring during those two seasons. Celen averaged a double-double a year ago with 20.6 points and 10.9 rebounds which goes along nicely with his 60 percent field goal percentage. A 39 percent shooter from the three-point arc, Zubec has played internationally in Russia, France, and Spain where he ranked among the top scorers at every level in which he played. Despite missing last season, Nolan looks to continue the success he had as a senior at Fairfield Prep where he was an All-State first team selection as a senior and a second teamer as a junior. With a roster that includes experience, scoring, and defensive prowess, the Fairfield University looks to build on the legacy it has established under Head Coach Sydney Johnson with another winning campaign in With the talent on this year s roster, it looks like the numbers will only improve for the upcoming season.

52 Stags In The NBA Through the years, Fairfield University has been well represented in the annual NBA draft, going back to its first draftee in Larry Rafferty was the first Fairfield player drafted by an NBA franchise, as the Philadelphia 76ers chose him in the 16th round of the draft. Ironically, Deng Gai was signed by the 76ers as a free agent in 2005, becoming the most recent Stag to join the pro ranks. Philadelphia and the Boston Celtics have each taken a Stag three times over the last 30 years, with the former Buffalo franchise taking a pair of Fairfield players. The program produced two draftees in a single draft four times, beginning with 1968 (Bill Jones and Art Kenny). The Stags also accomplished that task in 1974, 1978, and In 1978, Boston was responsible for signing the two Fairfield players in that draft, namely Steve Balkun in the seventh round, and Kim Fisher in the eighth round. A.J. Wynder became the first Fairfield University player to appear in an NBA game when he signed a free agent contract with the Celtics. Wynder played along side hall of famers Larry Bird, Kevin McHale, and Robert Parish. Deng Gai became the first Fairfield player to don an NBA uniform since Wynder. Gai appeared in several games with the 76ers during the pre-season, and at the start of the campaign In the pre-season, Gai posted four blocked shots against the Houston Rockets, and had at least one block in his first three games. Over the last 30 years, 13 Fairfield players were drafted or signed a free agent contract with an NBA team. Fairfield NBA Draft Choices Name Year Round Team Larry Rafferty th Philadelphia Bill Jones th Philadelphia Art Kenny th Baltimore Rich O Connor th K.C.-Omaha Phil Rogers th Buffalo Danny Odums th Buffalo Steve Balkun th Boston Kim Fisher th Boston Joe DeSantis nd Washington Mark Young nd Los Angeles Pete DeBisschop th Seattle A.J. Wynder 1987 **** Boston Deng Gai 2005 **** Philadelphia Wynder was not drafted out of college but was offered a 10-day contract with the Celtics during the 1991 season while playing in the CBA. Gai signed with the Philadelphia 76ers as a free agent. He was also drafted by Albany of the CBA. All others were drafted but not signed. Wynder and Gai are the only Stags to appear in an NBA regular-season game.
