FEATURING Best Buddies This year Best Buddies has been very busy, with meetings every two weeks and events in between! The year started out with fun and games on the LHS baseball fields with parachutes and baggo. Students from all grades came and took part. The club then held a Minute to Win It competition where both buddies and peer buddies took part in minute long games like Junk in the Trunk, and Cookie Face. These games were all planned by the Best Buddies student organized board composed of juniors and seniors at LHS. The board meets every two weeks before school in order to ensure that events and meetings are organized and planned out. October was full of special events, starting off with the peer buddy reveal party where the buddies were matched with their peer buddies for the 2016-2017 school year. Smiles and hugs were happening everywhere when the buddies met for the first time. The peer buddy team is composed of amazing LHS students who volunteer to take part in a one on one friendship with a student with an intellectual or physical disability. We also held a meeting with a special guest speaker, Peter Dankelson. Peter came and talked to the Best Buddies club during an after school meeting and gave a speech about the Choose Kindness Campaign. He involved the buddies and club members in spreading the important message of leaving a legacy of kindness and inclusion. Later on in October Best Buddies held a spooktacular Halloween party that included games like Mummy Wrap and Halloween Bingo, and other activities like dance competitions and photo booths! People came in all sorts of costume from Star trek, and Deadpool, to Hip Hop Dancers! To end the month the Best Buddies Board put together a peer buddy group Pumpkin Painting party, which happened over the weekend before Halloween. The peer buddy group came together to paint pumpkins and decorate cookies while hanging out with their buddies on a fun filled Sunday! The goal and mission of all these silly and fun activities is simply to create friendships and close the gap between the special education and mainstream environments in the school. Our meeting helps introduce students to people they would not normally have in their classes. While some of our games seem a little weird. Like shaking ping pong balls out of a tissue box that is strapped to your back they all have a purpose by helping break the ice and create laughter. Best Buddies is a judgement free zone and a guaranteed smile, where new people are always welcomed and integrated into our tight knit community. One of our buddies said it best at our last meeting when he exclaimed that moments like this make my life worth living, and that is simply the goal of our club.
