Click to Join or Renew (Your National Membership) Safety Corner Motorcycles are fun. That s not news to anyone who s ridden. But neither is the fact that they re also way more dangerous than a car. The cold reality is that motorcyclists are 30 times more likely to be insured in a crash than people in a car, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). And nearly half of all motorcycle deaths are the result of single-vehicle crashes. The numbers are even scarier for us older riders, who are increasingly taking up or returning to motorcycling after many years. Because of our slower reflexes, weaker eyesight, more brittle bones, and other disadvantages, riders over 60 years old are three times more likely to be hospitalized after a crash than younger ones. Still, many enthusiasts enjoy a lifetime of riding without injury. The key to optimizing your odds is to be prepared and avoid risks. Keep in mind that 48 percent of fatalities in 2010 involved speeding, according to the IIHS, and alcohol was a factor in 42 percent. Eliminate those factors and you ve dramatically reduced your risk. Lets ride! Any tips you would like to share with me for publication please feel free to contact me at rboykin9430@msn.com by Safety Officer, Robert (Gumbo) Boykin 4
Director s Memo continued from page 1 The intent is to start getting rides and activities posted in the calendar now so that everyone has ample time to plan, but also to solicit ideas from all of you. You may have rides or activities that are of special interest to you that we could share with everyone. Please mark your calendars and plan to join us and participate. We really do value your input! And speaking of ride planning and the Christmas party, MMA of Verde Valley is hosting their annual Frosty Balls and Chilly Boobs ride on January 1st. Thanks to the gift exchange at the party, I ll no longer have any valid excuses for any experiences with frost (see pic)! Don t laugh! This is real life!! HAHA! If you re interested in the ride, details can be found on Facebook by searching Frosty Balls and Chilly Boobs. I hope all of you have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! We ll see you all at the next Chapter meeting on Saturday, January 5th! 5
