Process: 1) Proceure a) Upon request, the Safety epartment will assess specific task. (See pages 2-7, MSD Ientification Form). 2) Work Controls a) Housekeeping: Material hanling an storage areas must be kept free of excess materials that create hazars (i.e. fire, explosions, slips, trips, or infestation by insects or roents.) b) Material Hanling Equipment: Aitional tools an equipment are when lifting or hanling material weighing over 50 pouns. Manual material hanling equipment shoul be use only for its esigne task an maintaine in goo conition. c) Hanling Heavy or Awkwar Loas: All employees are to lift safely an minimize manual hanling when possible: i) Where use of lifting equipment is impractical or not possible, two man lifts must be use. ii) All loas carrie on hancarts shall be secure. iii) All awkwar type loas shall be secure to prevent tipping over. iv) Aitional methos inclue: (1) Reucing the weight of the loa by iviing it into two manageable loas. (2) Reucing the capacity of the container. (3) Reucing the istance the loa must be hel away from the boy by reucing the size of the packaging. (4) Team lift the object with two workers. It shoul be performe as follows: (a) Work with someone of similar buil an height, if possible. (b) Choose one person to irect the lift (e.g., lift on the count of three ). (c) Lift with your legs an raise the loa to the esire level at the same time. () Always keep the loa at the same level while carrying. (e) Move smoothly an in unison. (f) Set the loa own together. (5) Improve the layout of the work process to minimize the nee to move materials. (6) Reorganize the work metho(s) to eliminate or reuce repeate hanling of the same object. (7) Rotate workers to jobs with light or no manual hanling. (8) Use mobile storage racks to avoi unnecessary loaing an unloaing. ) Even when mechanical ais are use to move materials, some lifting cannot be avoie. Before you lift, consier the following: i) Use manual material hanling evices (han ollies, carts, lift tables, forklifts) where efine by the company an wherever possible in all other situations. ii) Wear supportive shoes. iii) When possible, push an pull rather than lift an lower. iv) Reuce the size of the material to keep it light, compact an easy to grasp. v) Try to have most workplace eliveries place at hip height. vi) Always keep objects in the comfort zone (between hip an shouler height). vii) Keep all loas close to an in front of the boy. Create 04/17: Revise 04/18 8
viii) Keep the back aligne while lifting. ix) Keep elbows near 90 egrees. x) Avoi slopes. xi) Avoi uneven floors. xii) Maintain the center of balance. xiii) Let the legs o the actual lifting. xiv) Decie on the route to take. xv) Check the route for any problems or obstacles such as slippery or cluttere floors. e) Incients an Injuries: Musculoskeletal injuries cause by improper lifting must be investigate an ocumente. Incorporation of investigation finings into work proceures must be accomplishe to prevent future injuries. 3) Training a) CNM shall ensure that a worker who may be expose to the possibility of musculoskeletal injury is traine in specific measures to eliminate or reuce that possibility. b) Aitionally, job specific training will be given on safe lifting an work practices, hazars, an controls.
