D G 410 D NEWSLETTER Dearest Lions OCTOBER 2016 From the pen of DG Zwaai.. October 2016 With the District Convention done and dusted, I trust that nobody lost their livers by die Dam. It was fun, which Lions should partake in! Maybe we should make t- shirts with the logo, I lost my liver in Swellendam, and sell it in order to raise funds The month of November is upon us. It is also the month in which our Lions have to pay extra care to those suffering from diabetes, it being Lions Diabetes Awareness Month, culminating on 14 November 2016. There are fellow Lions with diabetes amongst us, but even it does not deter them from serving others with similar conditions or even in worse situations. We should all stand back and give a big hand to our fellow Lions for their selfless actions toward others! By the way, don t forget about our youth. They are the future leaders. Most of us are oldies per the average age PDG Bokkie let us have last year. But never let the oldies get hold of you. For those who are not so fit, here is an exercise regime for us: Begin by standing on a comfortable surface, where you have plenty of room on each side. With a 5-kg potato bag in each hand, extend your arms straight out from your sides and hold them there as long as you can. Try to reach a full minute, and then relax. Each day you'll find that you can hold this position for just a bit longer. After a couple of weeks, move up to 10-kg potato bags. Then try 50-kg potato bags and eventually try to get to where you can lift a 100-kg potato bag in each hand and hold your arms straight for more than a full minute. (I'm at this level). After you feel confident at that level, put a potato in each bag. Have an excellent month!!! Lions regards Zwaai Krüger There is no strength without passion TO the East London Clubs -o-o-o-o from New Zealand Thank you very much for hospitality and communication. I have shared with local Cambridge Club. Iris and Mike are loved by us all and convened a magic trip through South Africa. Lucy.
Port Rex Lions Club - We Serve in District 410D As part of our "more service, less meetings" approach, we spent our second Monday in October taking an evening drive, handing out sandwiches and warm scarves to the homeless on the East London streets. A very rewarding and humbling experience indeed. This is our second outing of this nature and we will be doing more in the future. A group of Lions made one of their regular visits to the children's wards at Frere Hospital during October, handing out gifts and toiletries. Our club's "more service, less meetings" approach has opened up many more opportunities for service and members who are participating are having much more fun. Our Second Monday Service for October had us hosting children and staff from Sunshine Children's Home. They were treated to giant burgers after which we played some Bingo, to the delight of all involved. Each child left with some goodies to use and enjoy later. Our Lions enjoyed the visit as much as our guests!
Gonubie Lions - We Serve in District 410D ART EXHIBITION The opening night of the Gonubie Lions Art Exhibition held at our local shopping centre, Kings Mall, on Friday 7 October, was well attended and thoroughly enjoyed by all attendees. There was an impressive display of work from 40 artists in various mediums including, oils, water colours, charcoal etchings and pewter work. This event which ran for a whole week was organised to raise much needed funds for the Carel du Toit Centre which assists pre-school deaf children with the natural acquisition of language and speech, through the maximum use of technology and the provision of parental guidance and support, so that they can speak and participate in the hearing world. MC CLELLANDS ADULT CENTRE FOR INTELLECTUALLY IMPAIRED COASTAL WALK Gonubie Lions sponsored snacks for the residents of Mc Clellands who enjoyed a super morning coastal walk under cloudy skies on Friday 14 October. After the walk residents were given fruit, chips and cool drink before being transported back to their residence.

Uitenhage Lions Club - We Serve in District 410D Request for donation of wheelchairs and walkers To those in need The Uitenhage Lions Club wishes to thank Andre Grundling of Grundling Orthopaedic Services Inc, Uitenhage for his donation of two brand new wheelchairs which will serve the local Community. In this respect the Club had received a request for a wheelchair from the De Lange family of Uitenhage. Mrs. De Lange was recently admitted into the Uitenhage Provincial Hospital where she had a lengthy stay in the care of the Intensive Care Unit, as a long standing heart condition. Her husband also confirmed that she had recently also suffered a stroke. The family had applied to the relevant officials within the Department of Health, however obtaining a wheelchair from the State can take several years. Her husband, who is in his middle 60 s, informed us that he has to physically carry and assist her with all her needs. He expressed his sincere appreciation to the Uitenhage Lions Club for donating the family a wheelchair. This will greatly improve her quality of life and provide the family an opportunity to be more involved in routine day to day activities.
