2 1 EASTERN PROVINCE JUNIOR GOLF PRESIDENT S REPORT 2010 It gives me great pleasure to present my second and this division s 45 th Annual Report on the activities of the Eastern Province Division of the South African Junior Golf Foundation for Committee I need to start with a special word of thanks to each of the dedicated members of the committee that served on the Junior Golf Foundation during this past year. Their ongoing support and dedication to the cause of Junior Golf in the Province is much appreciated. 3 2 2. JUNIOR MEMBERS During the final year of the South African Junior Golf Foundation, we witnessed a growth in the number of players playing in our Foundation Tournaments. It is always a pleasure to see the new faces of players and parents at our tournaments. This is an indication that the game is growing at grassroots level, which is so important for our clubs and for the province. To all the players I would like to give you a word of thanks for each one s commitment, dedication, respect and loyalty towards our division, Eastern Province. Luke Jerling once again produced the highlights for our Division. He was selected to play for and captain the South African U/18 Foundation team at The World Junior Championships in Japan. South Africa finished a credible 6 th out of 25 teams while Luke finished 19 th out of a field of 60 players. He was also selected for the South African team to play for and also captain the SA U/18 team that won the All Africa Challenge where he was runner-up. Luke won the SA Boys Matchplay Title as well as the EP Mens Order of Merit. He was also a valuable player in the EP Men s Inter Provincial Team. Congratulations to Luke s parents. I know that you are just as proud of him as we are of his achievements. We would like to wish Luke everything of the best for his future endeavours with his golfing career. Luke and Siegmund Human, as Foundation members, also represented the Eastern Province team at the Inter-Provincial held in Pretoria. Congratulations to these two juniors, we are very proud to produce players of this caliber. It is at the Foundation where we try to teach our juniors the etiquette of golf. I would like to thank those parents who try their best to assist us in this ongoing project. Children tend to copy us as adults and parents. When we take teams to provincial tournaments, we notice that Eastern Province teams set the standards on and off the course when it comes to etiquette and behavior in general. A big thanks for this must go to our parent fraternity.

4 3 Fortunately, our membership in 2010 slowed a slight increase, which is positive when one considers a decline in most other provinces. I would like to thank everyone who made a concerted effort to market the Foundation. One would be surprised how much you can achieve through word of mouth. I would also like to thank all the coaches who introduce the next generation of players to the game and send them on to the Junior ranks. It is especially pleasing to see that our Under 12 section has shown some very positive growth during Junior Members SPONSORSHIPS & DONATIONS On behalf of the Eastern Province Junior Golf Foundation, I would like to thank all the various companies and institutions for their financial assistance during Even through tough economic circumstances, these companies and institutions were willing to provide us with sponsorships. I know that many of these companies and institutions will be providing sponsorships for the next year. A special thank you to NOMADS (Eastern Cape) and the Eastern Province Golf Union for their continued financial support over the years. I would also like to thank the following companies and institutions who were major sponsors for some of our tournaments during 2010: Extrusion World, Dale Hayes, Nedbank, Compliance Wise, Keyhealth and Glopin, Griebenow Attorneys, Rosehill Superspar (Port Alfred) and LS Turnkey. 5 4 A word of thanks to Alwyn Griebenow, Graeme Whale, Louis Brophy and everyone else for securing these sponsorships for the Foundation. As you are all aware, without financial assistance it is virtually impossible to manage the Division in an effective manner. Parents already carry a heavy financial burden as it is, and therefore we are very thankful to all our sponsors and donors. Without sponsorships and donations, this financial burden will just be that much heavier. 4. COACHING Our sincere thanks goes to all the professional coaches in the Province who made an effort to assist our juniors during We as a Foundations receive no support from SAGA for coaching and our players and parents have to pay for their coaching. We would like to encourage our juniors to support these professional coaches. A special word of thanks to Graeme Whale for the extra effort he put into the 2010 Under 18 IPT team that competed at Humewood Golf Club. 5. COMPETITIONS A large number of competitions were held in 2010 and a word of thanks goes to everyone who assisted to run these tournaments successfully. A special word of thanks to Sieg Human, with assistance from Glen Maybery, for the professional way he has advertised and organized these tournaments. We will miss your input. NATIONAL & PROVINCIAL TOURNAMENTS Our juniors played in many Provincial and National tournaments during Our teams tried their best in all the tournaments they played in. FINANCES You all received a copy of our audited financial statements for It is obvious for all to see that our financial status is in a healthy state, even though we are working with a limited amount of funds. A special word of thanks to Jurg van Onselen who has kept our financial situation on an even keel throughout the year. A monthly statement is available to any interested party on request at any time of the year.

8 7 8. IN CONCLUSION During 2010 our Junior Golf Foundation Committee elected by you really worked well together as a team. Everyone was dedicated to setting high standards by which we organize Junior Golf in Eastern Province. As this is a work in progress, we are always trying to improve on these standards. I would also like to extend a word of thanks to each parent who has assisted us as committee. Your contribution is much appreciated. Sieg Human and Louis Brophy are not available for re-election. To these 2 members, thank you very much for your valuable input during the past 2 years. Your participation in the committee will be sorely missed. Nevertheless, Sieg Human is now on the EPGU and his portfolio is Junior Golf, so he is still involved with us. Louis Brophy will still have an interest in Junior Golf for a while to come. I would also thank the EPGU for their guidance and help during the year. I would like to mention Barry Snyman (President), Greg de Doncker (Junior Golf Representative) and Richard Hargreaves (Secretary) for your interest and dedication to Junior Golf. As this is formally the last Annual Report of the South African Junior Golf Foundation (Eastern Province Division), I would like to use the opportunity to bring a small tribute to the Foundation. A word of thanks to All my predecessors as presidents, for building the Eastern Province Division of the Foundation to what it is today, To all the Foundation committees through the 50 years of Foundation golf, To all the parents, sponsors and coaches who shaped the Foundation into the phenomenon that is respected worldwide, And lastly to all the Junior Golfers from 1960 to 2010, who have always been the heart and soul of the Foundation. The number of leading golfers over the world is testimony that they have used the Foundation to bring great honour to the South African Junior Golf Foundation.

9 8 As this is the dawn of a new era in Junior Golf in South Africa, I wish to extend an invitation to all involved to help us build on the success of the Junior Golf Foundation for the improvement of Junior Golf. Thank you. Peter Baxter President
