4 Mission Our mission is to develop community golf aimed at mass participation and youth development. Achieved in partnership with government (seeking an inclusive economy through mass participation - ASGISA) and business (corporate social investment aimed at youth development).
5 Background Ralph Stoker Golf Course (Roosevelt Park) established in 1972 as a golf course Mark Vorster, who has been involved in the golf industry for some 6 years, secured the tender in 2003 and renamed the facility Creek 9 Golf Club February 2005, Mark turned his attention to grass-roots golf development, and partnered with Johannesburg City Council and Philips on a municipal property in Westbury-Sophiatown which he called Khaya Golf Mark sought a reputable and experienced team to support the vision, and this team is working closely with the Johannesburg Local Authority to align their
6 Key People Nikita Cindi (Chairperson) - Director: AGS Frasers International Removals. Distribution and Development Manager for South African Breweries from 1997 to 1999, a Specialist Producer for SABC between 1995 and 1996, and Regional Manager of Protec from 1993 to Represented South Africa as a science educator at the 1993 NASA Space Camp in Alabama, USA. Taught Mathematics and Science. BSc at Keele University in Staffordshire and a MSc in Applied Mathematics at the University of Wales. Alfred Mzizi - Consultant to the Chairperson of National Portfolio Committee (SASR) and a member of former SARU Rugby Academy at UPE. Head coach of SA U23. Previously with South African Defence Force and Marketing Manager: High Performance Centre at UP. Spent 6 months at IMG in the USA. BA Ed (Sports Management). Currently MSc in Sports

Studied pharmacy at University of the North, medicine at Medunsa, and currently completing a BSc (Hons) in Aerospace Medicine. Dr Dudley Jackson - Head: National Strategic Initiatives, National Productivity Institute. Previously a Director of Schachat Cullum (national home building group of companies). Studied economics and mathematical statistics at Rhodes University, quantity surveying at the University of the Witwatersrand, Master s degree and Doctor s degree in Business Leadership from UNISA s Graduate School of Business.

10 Synopsis of Golf in SA Statistics: 544 golf courses, 432 golf clubs and 15 Unions in the country (Golf on SA Website) 70% of SA golfers are white males aged between 26 and 58 (Independent Research) registered golfers in SA administered by Nedbank National Golf Network (NGN) Costs: Between R10 and R50 million to build an 18 hole-golf course (Golfdata) Maintaining an 18-hole golf course costs between R250K and R750K p.m. (Golfdata) Joining a golf club costs between R1 000 and R p.a. (Independent Research);

16 Some successes, many challenges Successes: Provided 2 communities with a new sporting code Provided jobs for 19 people and accommodation for 9 staff members Distributed some 500 golf clubs, numerous golf bags and golf shoes to local youth Received support from Gauteng MEC for Sport and Ward Councillors and GDS Provided an estimated rounds of competitive golf over the past 3 years Improved security of the 2 communities and upgraded infrastructure Challenges: Capital funding for infrastructure
17 Partnerships Government - Supports ASGISA ( inclusive economy and youth ) - PPP National, provincial and local government -Service delivery (mass participation and youth development) Corporate Sponsors - Supports corporate social Communities, responsibility (youth families development) and and marketing schools mileage -(mass mainly participation through mass and media) - PPP participation and development of youth; also could reduce crime rate, minimise effect on flora and fauna, increase surrounding property value Academies and Wellness Centres - Mzansi Golf sites linked to an Academy
18 Future Tigers are being afforded an opportunity. Conclusion The vast majority of golf courses and golf practice facilities exist and continue to be constructed in more affluent areas. Basic tuition and affordable golf equipment are seldom made available, adding to the barriers to entry. By constructing facilities that are geographically accessible, affordable and of a high standard, golf will have a far greater reach. By offering the youth an introduction to the game and providing them with a previously inaccessible pastime, there is less of an opportunity to indulge in the prevalent social ills. For instance, at the Westbury golf range an average of 50 local youths participated in informal, yet effective tuition. They have been provided with equipment, and coached in golf techniques and etiquette.
19 Proposal We request the honourable committee to formally support and endorse this initiative to make golf accessible to all South Africans (focusing on development of facilities, youth and family golf - including school leagues, woman and people with disabilities). We are seeking to partner with Government to roll-out this initiative as part of Government s mass participation programme nationally, of which golf is one of the codes, and seek assistance with the sourcing of appropriate development facilities and funding.
