2 1. Regional Sport & Physical Activity Coordinators The Partners Council hired Regional Sport and Physical Activity Coordinators, one for each of the six regions, fulfilling a core priority (as established within the Partners Council s Aboriginal Sport, Recreation and Physical Activity Strategy) to build capacity at the regional level. For the first time, a Sport and Active Living Leadership youth is employed as a Regional Coordinator for the Northwest Region. The primary role of the Regional Coordinators is to plan, coordinate and administer regional programs that advance the Regional Action Plan and promote the Partners Council s province-wide programs and initiatives. Adam Prytula Northwest Region - Sport & Physical Activity Coordinator Office Location: 1188 Main Street PO Box 2920 Smithers, BC V0J 2N0 Phone: Fax: Regional Engagement, Planning and Program Delivery The Partners Council s commitment to regional engagement has been the distinguishing feature of the ASRPA Strategy. The regional engagement process was designed to be credible, open and representative, demonstrating the commitment of the Partners Council to supporting a strong, sustained level of direct community/regional involvement with the implementation of the Strategy. On May 16 th, 2013 in Terrace, BC the Partners Council delivered a one day Regional Engagement and Planning Workshop, one in each of the 6 regions. Participation this year for the Northwest Region included 20 attendees, as we continue to build capacity through increasing awareness, interest, involvement and participation at the regional level. 3 3. Sport & Active Living Leadership for Aboriginal Youth (SALL) In order to continue to support youth in their various community-based volunteer initiatives in the areas of physical activity and healthy living, the 2013 Sport & Active Living Leadership for Aboriginal Youth program was developed to select 18 Aboriginal youth leaders (three youth per region) to participate in a series of SALL workshops conducted as part of the Gathering Our Voices (GOV) Aboriginal Youth Conference held in Penticton March 19-22, The Partners Council will provide ongoing support for the 2013 SALL youth cohort after the third annual SALL conference. Periodic teleconference calls, communication and a SALL Facebook group will keep the SALL 2013 group connected throughout the year. As with the 2011 SALL program, candidates are expected to serve as a youth representative on their corresponding Partners Council Regional Committee for a minimum of 1 year ending March 31, 2014, and develop their own community-based initiatives designed to increase local participation in physical activity. 4 4. Regional Update & Activities The program delivery in the Northwest region is based on the feedback we receive from our host application call-outs. These call-outs have taken place in the spring & summer of 2013 that had a closing date of April 22, The most recent call-out closed this month on September 13 th, for the upcoming fall & winter programming. Based on the feedback we received there has been an emphasis on youth sport camps throughout the region. We have delivered lacrosse, soccer, basketball, & athletic camps in recent months reaching communities from Houston to Hartley Bay and some in between. There has also been an Aboriginal Coaching Module course hosted in Houston to help prepare and certify our Team BC Soccer Coaches so they will be ready to lead our teams into the 2014 North American Indigenous Games. 5. Positive Community Effects This is Fun! When can we play this again? - Community Host U15 TeamBC Soccer Team The youth were very respectful, hardworking and willing to learn. The fact that they wanted the camp to continue was pretty strong evidence of the level of enjoyment. Basketball Coach/ Facilitator Partner Council Northwest Region QUARTERLY REPORT, Summer
