4 Captains Corner Great Venue Sanctuary Cove was a little wet in patches but still in great condition and perfect weather for winter golf. A most enjoyable day at this fantastic venue! Great to see such a huge turnout to the game and this is the biggest field we have had to date with 84 players enjoying the challenging layout on this fantastic course. We had the pleasure of our National President Derrick Jones visit us and hope he had an enjoyable day it could not have been too bad as he won the C Division on 33 points. It was my pleasure to induct two new members, Brad Horne and Rob Goldie, which brings our membership number to 95 full members with 12 prospective members. PAGE 4

5 Please remember gentlemen that we need members not only to play the games and enjoy what Nomads has to offer, but to get involved with the committee to ensure the growth and continuity of the club. The new Nomads shirts were worn for the first time and again we thank Dave Pichanick and Laurens Hamman for their effort in arranging these. I m sure you all agree that they re much cooler and smarter than our previous shirts. The Charity Day held at Gailes GC was an outstanding success and a great effort by Laurens Hamman and his team. The day raised nearly $15,000 for our beneficiary YoungCare which I have no doubt will be put to very good use. We will make a presentation to them at a later date when the final amount will be handed to them. The National Tournament is creeping closer and we have 110 entries to date, including 24 from New Zealand and 10 from South Africa. Entries close on the 31 st July and I urge all the Brisbane members to support this great event. As we are growing and our fields are getting bigger it puts pressure on preparing the prize sheet. Please ensure that the captain of the fourball (the first named on the timesheet) hand the scorecards in before you take your clubs to your cars as this further delays the process. Please also ensure that the last fourball playing the short holes or the longest driving hole remember to bring in the markers as this causes a major delay if we need to go out onto the course to fetch them. 6 Around the course Tricky Greens A record field of 84 players enjoyed the day at the challenging Sanctuary Cove GC on a fantastic winter morning. The course was a little wet in patches however it is great to be able to have one of our monthly games at this venue. The greens are raised and pin placements can make scoring tough, however there were many who that did not seem to bother. Our Divisional winners, Ryan Broodryk (31pts), Brad Horne (34 pts) and Derrick Jones (33 pts) all played very well and will no doubt look forward to a return to this venue next year. Paul McIlroy had a day he would rather forget and joined the crying towel brigade scoring 15 points off a 6 handicap. PAGE 6

9 Annual Competitions Competitions explained There are several competitions that are ongoing throughout the playing year as follows: Best Odd The 3 best scores of the odd calendar months of the playing year. Best Even The 3 best scores of the even calendar months of the playing year. Best Golfer of Year The cumulative score of all your games played during the playing year. The more games played the more chance you have of winning. Best Worst Golfer The winners of the crying towel each month will play for this and the winner will be the golfer who scores the most points on Gold Cup day Gold Cup Winner The winners of each division at the monthly games will compete in a separate competition on the last monthly meeting, referred to as Gold Cup. This is separate from the normal monthly competitions and will only be open to the qualifiers. The golfers competing in the Gold Cup will play off an average of your handicaps played during the year which may not necessarily be the same as your handicap on the day for the normal monthly game, which you are still eligible to play on the day. Peter Thompson Knockout This is an optional competition played as a combined stableford on a straight knockout basis with the final played on Gold Cup day by the two remaining teams. PAGE 9

10 Forthcoming Events Next Meeting What s on The next game is at McLeod GC on Sunday 21 st July There are 72 spots available, with a 6:30am two tee start. The places will be allocated as the registrations are received. Please register via the Nomads website at and book early as numbers are limited and must be confirmed by 15 th July Knockout The Peter Thompson Knockout competition will start with the qualifying round in August. This is a combined two ball competition, played during the monthly games and is open to all full members. National Tournament The fifth National Tournament is to be held at Noosa Springs Resort from 25th - 27th October The Noosa Springs golf course has 18 superb holes in a spectacular and beautiful setting that is inspirational. Maintained in immaculate condition and enjoying a subtropical climate, the course is playable all year round and in almost all weather conditions. 11 From the Rule Book Slow Play Without a doubt the most annoying thing on the golf course is slow play. Here are some hints: 1) Always walk at a brisk pace to your ball; 5) A reminder that in Nomads we putt out when on the green so don't mark your ball. Finish putting once you have started; 6) If you can no longer score PICK UP. 2) Talk / tell jokes whilst you are walking and not when teeing off or hitting/putting; 3) Don't look for a player s ball unless you are in the same area as the lost ball or have picked and cannot score; 4) Whilst waiting for your turn to putt, clean your ball and check your putting line so when it is your turn you are ready to play and you don't have to go through your lengthy pre- putting routine; PAGE 11

13 On the lighter side Golfer and the Dentist A man and his wife walked into a dentist's office. The man turned to his wife and said, "Open your mouth honey, and show him." The man said to the dentist, "Doc, I'm in one heck of a hurry. I have two buddies sitting out in my car waiting for us to go play golf, so forget about the anaesthetic, I don't have time for the gums to get numb. I just want you to pull the tooth, and be done with it! We have a 10:00 am tee time at the best golf course in town and it's 9:30 already... I don't have time to wait for the anaesthetic to work!' The dentist thought to himself, "My goodness, this is surely a very brave man asking to have his tooth pulled without using anything to kill the pain."so the dentist asks him, "Which tooth is it, sir?"
