We S e r v e The Sandwich Lions Tale July - August 2017 Visit Our Web Site at: http://snd-lions.weebly.com Hello Lions, Another year is in front of us, and I am very excited. First, I would like to thank Lion Ed Carter and all the officers finishing their terms. They helped make last year a successful year along with a great membership. When I was president in 1984 things were a lot different. I was skinny and looked young. Now, I look like Grandpa, fat and old. Lion Larry Phillips was Lion of the Year. The membership was mostly teachers and Caterpillar people. Our meetings were at St. Paul s with Edwina Vincent cooking our meals. See how times change! We had a busy July of activities starting with Freedom Days Parade, fireworks selling popcorn, Fishing Derby, cruise night and Vision Screenings. So far, we have helped approximately 250 people at the Fishing Derby, and we referred 82 people to the eye doctor from our vision screenings. This is a positive impact upon our community. Our club s generosity is a blessing to so many! The Steer Raffle Project is coming soon with Lions Ed & Sue Carter being chairmen. As you know this is the biggest project of the year. We will need everyone s HELP! The dates are Sept. 6th thru Sept. 10th. Sign-up sheets will be available during the August 9th picnic in the fairground building across from the Round House. In closing, I would like us all to continue our compassion we have for helping people. The Fair starts on Wednesday, September 6 th. Co-chairs, Lions Ed and Sue, will be looking for this information at the picnic, so that they can begin to fill in the work schedule. If possible attempt to work at least 2 shifts during the fair. There will also be times before and after the Fair, in which maintenance and/or clean-up of the building will require additional assistance. Our District Governor - Lion John, who did our Installation of Officers in May, has been in and out of the hospital along with a couple of surgeries since the start of the International Convention in Chicago last month. He is now home, but is not accepting phone calls at the current time, and hopefully will be back to full strength in the next month or so. Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers and if possible send him a card. DG John s address is: DG John Hilliard, 12330 Russet Lane, Huntley, IL 60142. The 1st SW zone meeting - for Lions year 2017-18 will be on August 31st. The zone meeting, sponsored by the Sycamore Lions Club, will be at Regale Center, 124 ½ S. California, Sycamore (6 p.m. Socialization hour, 7 p.m. Dinner).
I will need to know who will be attending no later than August 23 rd. If you think that you want to attend, let me know and I will contact you when we get back. The Birdies Count - at the John Deere Classic a couple of weeks ago was 1918. If you made a pledge, attempt to round your payment up to at least the next highest dollar amount or even to $25 if possible. This money will ultimately return to our LIF. Our annual picnic - will be on Wednesday, August 9 th at the Sandwich Fair Grounds. The picnic is counted as one of our regular dinner meetings with the start time being 6:30 pm. -- Use the entrance to the Fairgrounds as if going to our Steer Building, the proceed toward the round building. Our meeting is across the road in the church building that services meals. -- You need to bring your meat of choice, something to drink, table service, and a dish to pass. -- Our Club provides a grill for the cooking of your meal. -- If you would like to bring a guest to the picnic, please do so. On July 13 th, we held - a LIF vision screening with the Sandwich YMCA as part of their Healthy Heroes Week; followed by the same unit at the Plano YMCA during the afternoon. For four short hours in the morning 55 were screened, with another 27 screened in 3 hours that afternoon. A very good turnout for something requested a few days after our screening at the Fox Valley Older Adults during May. Much credit must go to two ladies at the Y for getting information out and handling the other arrangements. MEDICAL CTR MAIN & COUNTY LINE ROAD Used eyeglasses, hearing aids, cell phones, and keys are collected by our Club and forwarded to our Lions of Illinois Foundation. If you have any of the above, bring them to our Club meeting (any month is okay). We pick up glasses at several locations, if you are aware of a location that would possibly save glasses for us let me know. Our September dinner meeting will return to our regular meeting night and the Fox Valley Older Adults building on September Wednesday, September 13 th. A Membership key award - is one method that LCI recognizes current Lions members who bring in new members. A new Lion must remain a Lion for at least one year and one day from their date of inducted into Lions for their sponsor to receive credit toward the next key award. The first six key awards could be attainable by any Sandwich Lion. These awards range from two (2) new members through twenty-five (25) members that meet the criteria. See the attached LCI form at the back of this issue of the Lions Tail. SLC 2017-18 Roster updates - If anyone wants to add a telephone number or make changes to their data that is displayed on the roster you need to contact me. If all goes well this document will go to the press just after the middle of August. The next Sandwich Cruise night - will be on Friday, August 18 th. Probably everything will be the same. If not either Lions: Bob, Gary, or Leo will probably provide the information at the picnic.
