OVER 5,000 PEOPLE TRIED GOLF AT OLYMPICS Be Active Truro Week Over 5,000 people were introduced to golf at the Olympics Live Sports Arena on Weymouth beach in the start of August. The Cornwall Golf Partnership took part in Be Active Truro week in August and over 600 people tried golf on Lemon Quay, Truro City Centre. Cornwall joined forces with all the other South West County Golf Partnerships to promote and increase awareness of golf at the Olympics, especially with the introduction of golf at the 2016 Olympics. Be Active Truro was organised by the Cornwall Sports Partnership to get more people active and into sport. This was the second year that Be Active Truro has taken place and there were over a dozen sports and activities on offer for people to try. Four local PGA Professionals helped with the project and offered free follow up taster sessions for everyone who took part at local golf clubs and driving ranges. There were over 90,000 people that attend the Live Sports Arena over the two week Olympic period and golf was one of eight different sports available for members of the public to try. County Development Officers from Devon, Dorset, Gloucestershire, Somerset and Wiltshire, as well as England Golf s Jamie Woodford and the Golf Foundation s Sam Stephens gave free golf lessons during the three days. We had three inflatable golf nets, two Huxley putting greens and the Sweet Spot Golf simulator. It was fantastic that golf had its own part to play in the 2012 Olympics! It was great to get local golf clubs involved and we hope to increase the number of golf clubs and ranges that take part in public venue events in 2013! The Cornwall Golf Partnership would like to thank Russell Binney (St Austell GC), Nick Martin (Mullion GC), Phil Brookes (St Kew GC) and Mark Hawkey (Treloy GC) for their help during the Be Active Truro project.
