Delmarva went into the All-Star break as the hottest team in the league, but has struggled out of the gate in the second half. The Birds lost three one-run affairs in Kannapolis before taking yesterday s series finale, 5-3. But Delmarva s pitching staff has remained it s backbone, as they now lead the league with a 2.99 ERA. Greensboro started the season as the worst team in league, opening 12-24 after a loss to the Shorebirds on May 15th. Since then, Greensboro is the best team in the league with a 29-9 record. Since the Shorebirds opened the season with a 4-6 mark and lost two of the first three series, they have a series record of 12-4-2 over their last 18 sets, going 39-24 over that stretch. TONIGHT S OPPONENT: Left-hander Justin Jacome makes his first career appearance against the Shorebirds tonight in the series opener. Jacome was selected by the Marlins in the 5th Round of the 2015 MLB First Year Player Draft out of UC-Santa Barbara. Tonight marks his 21st professional appearance and his 16th career start. This is his first start since April 22nd - his last four appearances in June have been out of the bullpen after he missed some time with an injury. LAST GAME QUICK HITS: The Shorebirds trailed 1-0 early in the game before they got three runs on a little-league 3-run homer by Cedric Mullins (it was ruled a single and a 3-base error, but three runs scored). After Bradley Strong tied the game for Kannapolis with a 2-run shot in the bottom of the seventh, Ademar Rifaela and Austin Anderson delivered with RBI singles in the top of the eighth inning and Christian Turnipseed came on to seal the 5-3 win. Turnipseed earned his 11th save of the campaign. Mike Costello was brilliant over six innings, allowing one run on five hits. PLAYER TO WATCH WHO S HOT/WHO ELSE YERMIN MERCEDES C Yermin Mercedes just earned his second South Atlantic League Player of the Week Award this season after torching the league last week. Mercedes homered four times in his last eight games in the first half and is now hitting.335 on the year, good for third in the league. WHO S HOT CEDRIC MULLINS Mullins has been as steady as anyone could hope for a lead-off hitter to be, as well as the defensive anchor in the outfield. Mullins has two 3-hit games in his last six contests and leads the team with 27 extra-base hits and 17 stolen bases. WHO ELSE DREW TURBIN Turbin has gotten off to a nice start in the second half. In the series against Kannapolis, he is 6-for-13 with a pair of doubles and two walks.

It will be his 36th career appearance and 35th career start. He has an electric fastball and the Orioles are hoping to see him continue his development, as he just turned 19 years old in mid-april. He has worked in rookie ball each of the last two seasons, so this is his first full season of pro ball. In 2014, he pitched for the Orioles affiliate in the Dominican Summer League as a 17 year old. Last season in 2015, he pitched for the Gulf Coast League Orioles. The Shorebirds seem to play well as a team when Peralta pitches - even though he has a 3-3 record, the team is 10-3 in games that he starts. ARSENAL: 2-seam Fastball, 4-seam fastball, slurve, circle change LAST OUTING: Peralta is coming off of the worst outing of his career, after allowing 10 hits and six earned runs to the Hickory Crawdads last Sunday. He got through the first three innings with only one run and two hits against him, but he allowed a total of five runs on eight hits in the fourth and fifth frames. He was removed with two outs in the fifth. AGAINST THE GRASSHOPPERS: This is Peralta s third career outing against Greensboro. He ll always remember his first back on May 12th when he earned his first professional win, firing five innings and surrendering just one unearned run on two hits. Last time out, he struggled on June 3rd. Peralta gave up five runs on six hits in just three innings in Greensboro and took a loss. 2016 HIGHS CAREER HIGHS Low Runs: 0, 6/9 vs. LWD Low Runs: 0, six times (min 3 IP) High Runs: 6, 6/19 vs. HIC High Runs: 6, DSL Nat (6/9/14) Low Hit: 2, three times Low Hits: 0, five times High Hits: 10, 6/19 vs. HIC High Hits: 10, 6/19 vs. HIC Innings: 6.0, 5/22 vs. LWD Innings: 6.0, 5/22/16 vs. LWD Walks: 5, three times Walks: 5, eight times (5x in 2014) Strikeouts: 10, vs. CSC (4/30) Strikeouts: 10, vs CSC (4/30/16) 2016 MISCELLANEOUS NUMBERS W L ERA GS IP ER Home 3 1 1.82 7 34.2 7 Road 0 2 5.88 6 26.0 17 Day 0 0 0.82 2 11.0 1 Night 3 3 4.17 11 49.2 23 AVG AB H HR BB SO vs. Left:.267 75 20 0 17 15 vs. Right:.239 142 34 1 21 41 TOTALS:.249 217 54 1 38 56 2016 INNING-BY-INNING Inning ERA IP H R ER HR BB SO AVG GIDP 1 3.46 13.0 9 6 5 0 12 14.205 2 2 2.77 13.0 9 4 4 0 7 13.205 2 3 3.55 12.2 13 8 5 1 4 12.271 0 4 3.27 11.0 10 4 4 0 10 5.263 1 5 5.79 9.1 13 7 6 0 2 11.342 0 6 0.00 1.2 0 0 0 0 3 1.000 0 7 8 9+ 2016 MONTH-BY-MONTH Month Record ERA IP H R ER HR BB SO AVG April 0-1 2.60 17.1 15 6 5 0 11 21.234 May 2-1 2.52 25.0 17 11 7 0 16 23.200 June 1-1 5.89 18.1 22 12 12 1 11 12.324 July August CAREER STATISTICS Season Team W-L ERA IP H R ER HR BB SO 2014 DSL 0-4 3.12 43.1 28 20 15 0 37 33 2015 GCL 0-2 5.61 25.2 20 20 16 0 19 31 2016 Delmarva 3-3 3.56 60.2 54 29 24 1 38 56 TOTALS 3-9 3.82 129.2 102 69 55 1 94 120 TOMORROW S STARTER: The Shorebirds give the ball to Reid Love in the middle game of the series. His last start was shortened to 3.1 innings because of a suspended game (rain) to open the second half.

Game #75 Delmarva Shorebirds vs. Greensboro Grasshoppers (Marlins) Arthur W. Perdue Stadium MANAGER RYAN MINOR Minor, 42, returns for his eighth season on the Shorebirds coaching staff, and his sixth as the team s manager. In 2015, he led the Shorebirds to 71 wins, the most victories for the franchise since 2009. This is Minor s second stint in Salisbury, having previously managed the Shorebirds for three seasons (2010-12) and spent two seasons (2008-09) as the hitting coach for the Shorebirds. In between, he managed the Frederick Keys (Advanced-A) in 2013. During his tenure as manager of the Shorebirds, the team compiled 302 wins, the most of any Delmarva manager. Minor aided the development of current Orioles, Manny Machado and Jonathan Schoop, who played for the Shorebirds in 2011. Minor, a longtime resident of Salisbury with his wife Allyson and two children Reagan and Finley, enjoyed a four-year run in the major leagues from 1998 through 2001. He spent his first three years with the Orioles and his final season with the Montreal Expos. Minor s playing career is best remembered for replacing Cal Ripken, Jr. at third base on September 20, 1998 when the consecutive games streak of 2,632 came to a close. The Orioles drafted Minor in the 33rd round of the 1996 First Year Player Draft out of the University of Oklahoma. In 1997, he played for Shorebirds and was an SAL All-Star third baseman. He batted.307 with 24 home runs and 97 RBIs. Minor still owns the franchise single season records for doubles (42). Minor also owns a decorated college basketball career. He is seventh all-time in scoring at Oklahoma with 1,946 points. He was selected in the second round (32nd overall) of the 1996 NBA draft by the Philadelphia 76ers. STREAKY DEFENSE: Delmarva s defense has either been superb or costly as the season nears the halfway point.
