And from Leon Tec., M.D. A sailor without a destination cannot hope for a favorable wind. Now that one is so true. How often we find ourselves out, sailing around just enjoying our boats but not really making any headway whatever. It s like taking a trip but not knowing where to! Directions are important. COMMODORE Bev Duff commodore@cmcs-sail.org So the point ~ What is the direction of CMCS? Now that we re in the final quarter of 2007 we re tacking to make progress towards next year. The Nominations Committee consisting of myself, Forest Banks, Fran Chapman and Joel Andrews soon will start our deliberations to decide the course for next year. We re looking for a few good sailors looking to help us chart our course. There are many positions to fill and if you are of the mind to help, please let one of us know your interest and availability. There are positions of Officers, Directors and Committee Chairmen to fill. Please step up to join the leadership crew of CMCS. Once again the Liberty Ashore Committee put together a great membership evening ~ good company, good food and even a floor show! What more could one ask. Thank you to all of you for your very hard work this year!!! Bill Misenheimer is our Legislative Committee Chairman and he has been following the Marco Island Anchoring Dilemma affecting all the waters of Florida. There is a hearing on Oct. 12 th at 9:00 a.m. at the Collier County Court House to address this issue. I know that several of us will be there representing the boating community on this issue. This item and many others on the horizon greatly affect the lifestyle and enjoyment of the waterways that we sailors hold so dearly. A very special public thank you to Steve Romaine, our PR Guru, for his up and beyond efforts to for Summerset Regatta! Pictures and articles about our event were in many of the local publications. There was some really great press. Bobbie Lee was kind enough to host the media on his boat for the event. Thanks guys for really stepping up! Our member renewal forms are going out in October and we have a very pleasant surprise for our members ~ dues reduction! With everything else going out of sight, the Board of Directors chose to give back to our great membership. Please complete your renewal and return in a timely manner so that the members putting together the Annual Directory and Calendar aren t pushed to make date lines. You re all volunteers here. NEW LOCATION! VICE COMMODORE Forrest Banks vcommodore@cmcs-sail.org Summerset was a great success due to the efforts of a lot of people. I thanked everyone at the dinner. I have two stories. Elise Missal is the one person that kept the whole program together. She set up the rooms on her credit card, planned the Saturday night party and the Sunday dinner. Between them figure $10,000. that takes a lot of work and she has done it for two years. Whenever there was a hole she plugged it. There were times when I would just not let her do something because you know Elise's favorite comment is, "Do you want me to do that?" Jim Shenko entered the race, bought dinners, tee shirts and the $100 boat sleeve. He could not make it, but never asked for anything back. We were able to resell his dinners for him. Then there is Bobby Lee who signed up and bought the boat sleeve. On Saturday he brought the press out into a brisk south wind to a course moved down the way; asked for nothing. Add Monica Smith who put the Northern Trust Skipper's Meeting on her credit card and with Darrell ran it. She sold raffle tickets and tee shirts on both nights in Naples. And like I said, I don't do it without approval from my admiral. However she had nothing to do with the cheerleader gig. There were others and I can't get to all of them, but I know who most of them are. Some I will probably never know because each activity is run individually. It is a $20,000 event and at least 50 people are involved some way in putting it on. We did well. I'll tell you how well in October. If anyone has any bills to turn in the deadline is the 28th. WEST FLORIDA PHRF I was just appointed to the BOD of West Florida PHRF. Not the rating committee, but the governing body. Let me know if there are non-rating PHRF issues on your mind. I am interested in improving sailing skills. One of the best ways is through racing. May sound macho, but racing teaches you what to do in conditions you may find yourself in that otherwise you may not have experience in. Forrest Membership Renewals... It's That Time Again 9-07 We will be collecting renewal membership dues for next year (2008) during October and November this year (2007). In order for you to be listed in the CMCS 2008 calendar, the dues must be received before December 1, 2007. Your Board of Directors, at its September meeting, approved the following dues structure for 2008 renewals: Family/boat membership - $120 (from $125 in 2007) Crew membership - $60 (from $80 in 2007) As we all know, the Chowder Chatter is now available for everyone - members and nonmembers - to view on, and print from, our website. However, if you prefer to have the Chowder Chatter printed and mailed (snail mail) directly to you, then we will ask that you simply add $12 to the dues amount above. The membership renewal form (in draft at the time of this writing) will be posted to our website no later than October 1, 2007. Please send us the completed form along with your check. RACE REPORT: Summer is almost over. The Summerset Regatta was how I noticed! It was typical Summerset weather with the breezy morning off Ft. Myers Beach which gave way shortly to the mid-day zephyr which in turn yielded to light sea breezes. Same old story, a beautiful day. The boats that made it as far in as the shorebreak were rewarded with a steady wind that seemed to bend enough to allow them to finish without tacking whle keeping more boat speed than the deepwater sailors offshore. This tactic paid off large for Capt. Roger Horton and his 7 year old Grandson crew. Wiley Coyote had the best corrected time in fleet and corrected out an hour ahead of second place..gordon Coffman (Ariel), Deb Shoman (Illusion), Diane Fowler (Windy City), Steve Romaine (Air Supply), Steve gave instruction on how to win big in class and Dave Naumann (Sand Dollar) all used this approach to garner top finishes in the Non-Spinnaker classes. Joe Bonness on Maria quietly left the Spinnaker fleet far behind. This is a frequent occurrence in light airs. Forrest Banks also went to the beach and kept Midnite Rider moving well for a second. In the Melges class Big Jim Gunderson took to the, you guessed it, beach. It worked for Gone Mad and the Plonski's also. Colgate Instructors Ken Martin and Doug Sparks sailed their Colgate 26's solo as I understand and finished in the mentioned order. The Multi-hulls had a more relaxing day than they wanted. The early moderate breeze gave them hope of big speed but when the breeze died Robert Libby kept Anhinga moving well and took first. Venerable Ned Christensen on Passion III hung on for second. Sunday's first was sailed (?) in no wind. All the Non-Spinnaker classes failed to finish in a contest of tide management. The Spinnaker, Sport and Multi-hulls sailed a shorter course and finished. The results were disappointing to some after finishing close in distance behind faster boats but long in time. Maria again worked the light air voodoo with Tippecanoe and Judy finishing well. Obsession led the Melges and John Kremski floated past the Multi-hull best. After a pause for swimming and lunch, the wind filled in lightly and a good race got off. The Race Committee Captain, Jeff Butzer and wife Jeanne stopped the first attempt at Race two due to a big wind shift. They restarted with minimum delay due to excellent work by the Mark Boat crew of Jimmy Doane. Throughout the Regatta, the Professionalism of the Race Committee was evident. The third race ended with many of the names frequently heard in light air races, heard yet again. Four classes out of six were decided on tie-breakers. So never give up, that last race is the important one. Myers Beach. The only thing resembling a Hurricane was the counter-clockwise course. Seven boats started a 5.5 mile course and all finished, albeit very slowly. Judy, the lone Spinnaker boat found the almost nonexistent wind to there liking. The only problem they had was loneliness. Steve Romaine kept Air Supply moving well enough to best Sand Dollar twice. Sand Dollar is not easy to top in light wind. Tim Stier sailed what looks to be a new boat, Blank Check, a Seaward 32. It seems to have a short mast but nevertheless moved along nicely and took both top spots in True Cruising. Roger ( I think like a wind ) Horton was seen on board with Tim. All the Boats in this race are to be commended for tenacity. They all hung in and finished despite the pain of drifting contrary to desired direction. September 29 is the Festival of the Islands Race off Ft. Myers Beach. We will make it fun so enter early and often. October 13, Kayusa Cup Race to South Seas Plantation. This will be a pursuit race. Highest ratings first and then boat for boat to the finish. Mike Kayusa has volunteered to be Race Committee for this race, named in honor of his Mother Betty. Thank you Mike. REAR COMMODORE CRUISING Jerry Canning cruising@cmcs-sail.org The only cruise we conducted during September was the 42nd Summerset Regatta. Five of us left Friday and spent the night in Champney Bay. The cocktail hour on Rum Daze was spent enjoying the view of beautiful, multi-million dollar houses that surround the bay and are only lived in a few months of the year. We moved to our docks in Naples on Saturday. We joined the racers for cocktails at the Bay Front Inn on Saturday night before moving to McCabe s Irish Pub for a great meal and great fellowship. On Sunday, a number of the cruisers went by fast dingy or by shoal draft Zydeco to Keywaden Island where we managed to squeeze into shore among all the boats that were partying on the island. I would like to extend my appreciation to Lynda and Mike for graciously making their boat available to help us get the cruisers who wanted to go down to the island. Those of us with dinghy s made an excursion of the return trip. We went down to Marco Island and returned via the inland waterway and covered over 25 miles roundtrip. In October, with the return of cooler weather, the cruising schedule picks up. We are scheduled to return to Pelican Bay October 5-7,2007. Rum Daze will again be leading that cruise and more information (including a chart of Pelican Bay with waypoints) will be forthcoming via e-mail as I get my information together. We have an overnight cruise scheduled to the beautiful South Seas Resort on October 13 & 14 with our racing members in association with the Kayusa cup. By now you should have made your reservations at the marina. Finally, Judy and Charles Tomlins are working on again hosting the annual CMCS Halloween cruise to Danger Island on October 26 to 29th. Based on the response to my e-mail, we are changing the Thanksgiving cruise from Panther Key to points north along the ICW. Tim and DeeDee Cheek are going to lead us on this new adventure. They describe the changed trip as follows: There s been some interest in changing the Thanksgiving cruise so we re heading north this year to the Cabbage Key area. This way if the weather kicks up, we are in friendly waters close to home but still far away from the daily routine. On Wednesday, head north to either Pelican Bay, or the east side of Useppa Island. We ll determine the final destination based on the weather and we ll let everyone know which anchorage we ll go to. Wednesday night we ll have happy hour on Miller Time. On Thursday, Thanksgiving Day we ll pack a lunch and take a trip through CheeDix Cut to the beautiful shores of the Gulf of Mexico. Two options for dinner; dine aboard or Cabbage Key. We ve had dinner there for the last three years and their Thanksgiving Dinner is excellent. I called Cabbage Key and they don t have a price for the meal this year; last year it was $21.95 and well worth it. They did say they would have their traditional Thanksgiving Dinner along with select items from their dinner menu. They do request reservations that we ll work out at the anchorage. Friday we ll lead a dingy trip to Bokeela and have lunch at the Lazy Flamingo or there s the beach at Cayo Costa. Friday night s cocktail hour will be a little different a SCHRU. Weather permitting; we re going to have a Sunflower Cocktail Hour Raft Up. We will somehow manage to get all our dingies tied up in a circle and we ll pass around our appetizers. So please keep this in mind when you are figuring out Friday s appetizer. No table, just your plate/bowl/ whatever that will hopefully make it full circle. Saturday we re planning on heading back to Sanibel Bight. Now is the time you can decide to stay put, head north or head south. I have also started the process of assembling the cruising schedule for 2008. Information on the tentative schedule has been distributed to the 2007 Cruise Leaders and Cruisers for their input. Watchdog Alert to CMCS members...here is the latest update on the Marco Island Anchoring issue that will go to court on October 12th. 9 A.M. Collier County Courthouse 3301 Tamiami Trail E. Naples, Fl. The CMCS Watchdog committee will be there. More details to follow as they happen. This is an excerpt from Clayborn Young's Cruisers' Net: Fellow cruisers, this is undoubtedly the most important message concerning the Marco Island anchoring controversy that we have posted here on the Salty Southeast Cruisers' Net since this whole mess began. Everyone concerned with the Salty Southeast Cruisers' Net strongly urges the entire cruising community to heed Captain Diebler's call to arms. We call on everyone who cruises the waters of the Sunshine State to make EVERY effort to be present at the Collier County Courthouse on October 12. I, myself, have been asked to be an "expert" witness for the defense, and will be flying down entirely at my own expense to make a court appearance. Don't be too impressed though. The real heroes in all of this are Captain Diebler and his fellow Marco Island cruisers who have had the courage to take a stand, and see it through the many, many delays imposed by the local legal system It bears saying one more time that a decision in the Marco Island anchoring case has the potential, nay, the likelihood, of affecting how all of us anchor (or don't anchor) on Floridian waters for many, many years to come. It's really that important! If this case is decided in favor of the local cruisers, I strongly suspect that communities and counties all over Florida will be very hesitant to enact, and particularly, to enforce, local anchoring regulations, UNLESS they establish state of Florida approved mooring fields. This would be a TREMENDOUS victory for the entire cruising community! There is a court decision requiring EPA to develop and implement by September 30, 2008, a national permit system for ALL vessels in the United States for a variety of normal operational discharges. I'm waiting to hear more from Connie Mack s office on permitting and how he will vote. UPDATE: The Watchdog Committee has received word that Connie Mack our House Rep. will Co-Sponsor the HR 2550 Recreational Boating Act and he is on the Committee. This is encouraging news. This year, the 42nd in our Sail the Tradition event was pre-publicized well. Members went the extra yard to encourage fellow members, guests and all those who love to sail to enter. The weather and winds were good on Saturday as 46 boats assembled and cameras clicked during the 6 starts off Ft. Myers Beach. Mary Naylor, SW Florida s Official Race Photographer, positioned herself on Bobby Lee s Press boat Drambouy as did News-Press photographer Marc Beaudin. The Fort Myers Beach Observer s photographer Saul Taffet with writer Kyle Mulligan at his side took the stern position and Fox4 stationed themselves on the bow for the action. Action it was as the wind and sea built prior to the start causing our media friends to feel squeamish! Regatta watchers near the pier were treated to several firsts: Separate starts for one-design Melges 24 s and Colgate 26 s, and the awesome sight of a Maxi 80 foot sloop in the race. As the fleet sailed southward to Naples, the press went to work. Ed Reed and his team from the News-Press coordinated articles by Dave Kempton and freelance writer Betsy Clayton. (see photos on News- Press.com/galleries-summerset regatta) Saul s photos appeared many times in the Beach Bulletin accompanied by Kyle s articles. Valerie Harring at the Cape Coral Daily Breeze, sister newspaper to the Observer, placed Summerset on the front page of the Shopper. Isabelle Thies, Ken Rasi, Michael Heider, and Tish Molloy of the River Weekly and Sanibel Sun posted race results in their publications. Mary Naylor s photos will be shown at our monthly meetings and will appear in the next Southwinds magazine in an article about Summerset. Photos are also available from Mary at photosail@aol.com. On Sunday, Wink TV travelled to Naples and ventured out in the Press boat. They showed their video of the regatta several times on TV that evening. A special thank you to the editor of the National Flight Magazine USA 3000 who listed our regatta in their calendar of things to do in September, and to Shelly Walton who posted CMCS Summerset information on the Lee County Website www.ftmyerssanibel.com.
