Aside from last year s MPSF Tournament finals, won by the Beach, the teams also met three times in the MPSF quarterfinals in matches held in Honolulu (2015 - UH won; 2005 - LBSU won; and 2002 - UH won). IN THE SHIP: In 24 seasons as a member of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, Hawai i advanced to the championship match four times with an 0-4 mark. UH lost in the 1995, 2001, 02, and 17 title matches. WHAT S AT STAKE?: The winner of the Big West Tournament earns the league s automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament, which will be held in Los Angeles. The tournament consists of seven teams and will feature three play-in matches (April 28 & May 1) in addition to the semi-finals (May 3) and finals (May 5). Currently, UH is ranked No. 5 in the latest NCAA RPI rankings, which is used to determine the field. ALL-CONFERENCE: UH placed six members on the inaugural All-Big West teams, including four on the first team - outside hitter Stijn van Tilburg, setter Joe Worsley, middle blocker Patrick Gasman, and libero Larry Tuileta. Opposite Rado Parapunov was an honorable mention selection while defensive specialist Gage Worsley was named to the all-freshman team. WINNING SEASONS: With a 19-7 mark, UH is assured of a winning record for the fifth consecutive season and seventh time under head coach Charlie Wade. UH s 19 wins ties for the 10th-most in program history. PLAY THE BEST: UH has faced 10 nationally ranked teams this season with an 12-7 record. All seven losses have come against teams ranked in the Top 10. BRING OUT THE BROOMS: The Warriors have made quick work of their opponents this season. Thirteen of the team s 19 wins have come in straight sets with eight occurring at the Stan Sheriff Center. Last season, 18 of the team s 27 wins were sweeps including 10 straight during a 15-match win streak. RARE COMPANY: Stijn van Tilburg became the 17th player in program history to reach 1,000 career kills in UH s win at UC Santa Barbara, April 7. Currently, the Amsterdam, Netherlands native has 1,053 kills during his three-year career, for an average of 3.82 per set. NATIONAL LEADERS: UH leads the country in a pair of categories - kills per set (13.71) and assists per set (12.82) and is No. 3 in hitting percentage (.346). Hawai i is also No. 9 in blocks per set (2.41) and No. 11 in aces per set (1.60). MANOA ROOFING COMPANY: Over the last three weeks, UH s block has come alive with at least 10 team blocks four times. The Warriors accumulated 22.5 blocks and held the nation s best offense, Long Beach State, to.278 hitting in last week s series. Sophomore Patrick Gasman is the team s top blocker, averaging 1.12 per set, which ranks No. 10 nationally. UH has totaled 10 or more blocks in seven matches this season including a seasonbest 13.5 in a four-set win at UC Santa Barbara. WEEKLY HONORS: Several Warriors have earned weekly recognition for their performances this season. Opposite Rado Parapunov earned the Big West Player of the Week award the past two weeks following a sweep of UC Santa Barbara and a series split with Long Beach State. Also winning the BWC Player of the Week award was Stijn van Tilburg (Feb. 26) while three players earned Defensive Player of the Week - Joe Worsley (Jan. 29), Larry Tuileta (Feb. 26) and Patrick Gasman (April 2). Four Warriors have earned VolleyMob s National Player of the Week award - Stijn van Tilburg (Feb. 27), Austin Matautia (March 13), Rado Parapunov (April 10), and Joe Worsley (April 17). In addition, van Tilburg and Matautia were named Off the Block/Molten National Outside Attacker of the Week during their breakout performances. LETHAL LEFTY: After a stretch of six straight matches without reaching double-figures in kills, opposite Rado Parapunov has found his groove back with seven straight matches of 10+ kills, including back-to-back matches of 20 kills versus UC Santa Barbara and Long Beach State. Against UCSB, the sophomore also tallied a career-high 10 blocks and averaged 4.43 kills per set in the series while hitting.404. He has 14 double-figure matches this year, including three 20+ kills, and is second in kills (3.56 kps) and third in aces (21) and blocking (0.81 bps). BRETT THE HIT MAN: After losing his starting job last month, junior outside hitter Brett Rosenmeier has made a successful return to the lineup. More importantly, he has helped to steady the team s passing game while also reaching double figures in kills in four of the last eight matches. He tallied a season-high 14 kills, with no errors, in 19 attempts (.737) against UC San Diego and also had 14 kills (.346) against Pepperdine. Rosenmeier leads the team with a.945 reception percentage and is second with 22 aces. He also sports averages of 1.99 kills and 1.21 digs per set, while hitting.301. NOT YOUR AVERAGE JOE: The reason for UH s offensive success is the play of setter Joe Worsley, who is making a strong run at All-America honors this season. The junior is second nationally at 11.08 assists per set while also averaging 1.89 digs per set, which ranks eighth in the Big West. The junior has directed the UH offense to a.346 attack percentage including nine matches in which the Warriors hit.400 or better. In four tournaments this season, Worsley has been selected to the all-tournament team each time, including twice being named the Most Outstanding Player (Texaco Classic and Waikiki Beachcomber Classic). STIJN THE MAN: All-American Stijn van Tilburg has adjusted quite comfortably to his new outside hitter position this season. Last year s Off The Block s Bryan Ivie Award recipient as the nation s best opposite, van Tilburg is averaging a team-best 4.00 kills per set, which ranks No. 4 nationally while also hitting at a.335 clip. He matched his career-high in kills with 27 in a loss to UC Irvine. van Tilburg was named to the alltournament team in all four of the team s tournament appearances Texaco Classic (4.00 kps,.513 hit%), Grow the Game Challenge (4.40 kps,.462 hit%), Waikiki Beachcomber by Outrigger Classic (4.00 kps,.490 hit%), and Outrigger Invitational (3.80 kps,.378 hit%). 2018 Rainbow Warrior Volleyball Weekly Release 2 HawaiiAthletics.com

HEAD COACH CHARLIE WADE 9th season Alma Mater: CS Fullerton, 1991 In eight years as head coach, Charlie Wade has resurrected the University of Hawai i men s volleyball program and into a national contender. The Rainbow Warriors have made two NCAA Tournament trips in the last three years while the 2017 squad advanced to the national semifinals and tied the program record with 27 wins. Wade has guided UH to postseason play six times, including a trip to the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation championship match in 2017. His teams also reached the semifinal round two other times, including in 2015 when the Warriors earned an at-large berth to the NCAA Tournament. That team finished with a 24-7 mark their best since 2003 and finished second in the MPSF standings (18-4) while ascending to the No. 1 national ranking for five weeks for the first time since 2004. During the 2016 season, Wade became the program s third head coach to reach 100 career victories with a thrilling four-set victory over No. 1 UCLA, February 5. Under Wade, UH has regained its title as national attendance leader, with averages of 3,671 in 2015 and 3,794 in 2017. After rebounding from a disappointing 7-20 season in 2012, Wade guided the Warriors back to the postseason in 2013 and not for a controversial call at match point in the fifth set against the Cougars in that quarterfinal match, UH may have pulled off the most improbable upset in tournament history. In 2011, Wade guided the Warriors to their second straight MPSF Tournament appearance and finished fifth in the final league standings. In his inaugural year, Wade led the Warriors to a 19-10 mark and a trip to the MPSF Tournament semifinals for the first time since 2003. Prior to Wade s arrival, UH had missed postseason play the previous two seasons and suffered through three straight losing seasons. YEAR-BY-YEAR RECORD (AT HAWAI I) OVERALL CONFERENCE Season W L Pct. A FIRST FOR EVERYTHING: UH s 2018 schedule featured five first-time opponents and the Warriors went 6-0 against them - Juniata (Texaco Classic), Lincoln Memorial and Barton (Grow the Game Challenge), Lees McRae (Waikiki Beachcomber by Outrigger Classic), and Concordia-Irvine (two-match series). MUSIC CITY WARRIORS: UH s appearance in the Grow the Game Challenge in Nashville, Tenn., marked the program s first regular season tournament outside the state of Hawai i since the 1994 Asics Grand Prix in San Diego, Calif. UH went 3-0 in the tournament with wins over Barton, Grand Canyon and Lincoln Memorial. Last season, UH travelled to the Midwest for matches against McKendree and Lindenwood, its first non-conference road matches since 1996. HOME SWEET HOME: Earlier this season, UH finished a seven-week homestand the longest since 1998 with a 9-3 record (2 wins were exhibition and did not count toward its record). UH has been nearly unbeatable at the Stan Sheriff Center in recent years, finishing last season with an undefeated regular season home record for the first time since 1988 with an 18-0 mark. Hawai i is 13-4 at the SSC this season. UH has an all-time record of 291-129 (.693) and 160-74 (.684) in conference play at the SSC since 1995. PRESEASON ALL-AMERICA: A trio of Rainbow Warriors were picked to the 2018 Off the Block/ Springbak, Inc. Preseason All-America teams. Returning AVCA All-Americans Stijn van Tilburg and Larry Tuileta were selected to the 10-member first team while Rado Parapunov was honorable mention. In addition, several Warriors were picked to OTB s preseason list watch lists Joe Worsley (Lloy Ball Award); Stijn van Tilburg (Bryan Ivie Award); Brett Rosenmeier (Karch Kiraly Award); Larry Tuileta (Erik Shoji Award); and Patrick Gasman (Ryan Millar Award). REPRESENTING THE USA: Outside hitters Brett Rosenmeier and Austin Matautia, middle blocker Patrick Gasman, and libero Gage Worsley were part of the 12-member U.S. Men s Junior National Team which competed and placed 14th at the FIVB Under-21 World Championship in the Czech Republic. UH had the most players represented on the squad. Libero Larry Tui Tuileta also competed for Team USA at the Pan American Cup in Canada, which took fifth place. ACADEMIC WARRIORS: UH was recognized by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) as one of just 19 men s collegiate teams to earn the AVCA Team Academic Award for 2017. It is the first time that the Rainbow Warriors earned the prestigious national honor. In addition, five Rainbow Warriors earned MPSF All-Academic honors last season. UH INKS THREE FOR 2019: Three players will join the Warriors in 2019 Cole Hogland, Devon Johnson, and Filip Humler. Hogland of Iolani School is regarded as one of the best players in the state of Hawai i, Johnson, of the Westlake Village High, he was a member of the gold medal-winning team representing the southern California region at the USAV High Performance Championship. Last summer, Humler helped the Czech Republic to a seventh place finish at the 2017 Youth World Championship and a European Championship. In addition UH has secured verbal commitments from two additional local players for the 2019 season. REGULAR PARTICIPANT: Hawai i has appeared in the NCAA Tournament in two of the past three seasons (2015 & 17). Last season, UH reached the semifinals for the first time in 15 years after defeating Penn State in an opening round match. The Warriors posted 27 wins a year ago, tying the most in program history with the 1996 squad that advanced to the NCAA title match. BEACH BOWS: Brett Rosenmeier and Colton Cowell represented UH at the USA Volleyball Collegiate Beach Championships last May in Hermosa Beach, Calif. The tandem finished fourth among a dozen pairs. The tournament was the first stop of the Team USA Summer Champions Series. 2018 Rainbow Warrior Volleyball Weekly Release 3 HawaiiAthletics.com
