Hello Viking Families! I hope y all are enjoying a relaxing, fun summer with family and friends! It is almost time to start dialing back the bedtimes, taking care of last-minute school supplies and setting alarms on phones for August 21 st. Fortunately, our campus had no major repairs over the summer, so we aren t behind on construction (unlike last year), so we ll be ready to roll when the young uns return! Though there aren t changes in our facilities, we are changing aspects of how we operate and ensure our students are learning. The most readily apparent change is a different bell schedule to accommodate what we are calling our VFND period, which will provide our teachers 30 minutes daily to address learning deficits that we identify during class time. Students will also be able to make up quizzes or tests missed due to school-related absences during the VFND period. If a student has demonstrated that he/she thoroughly understands the class content to that point, the student can use the VFND period to work on homework or, with the teacher s guidance, take their learning in that particular class to a higher level. The change in our bell schedule is just one aspect of a more holistic approach to educating our students. Our staff has worked since last January on what we call the Four C s : collective responsibility, concentrated instruction, convergent assessment and certain access. In short, collective responsibility is a shared belief that the primary responsibility of each member of the organization is to ensure high levels of learning for every child. Sounds obvious for an educational institution, but we need to intentionally maintain our focus in the hustle and stress of everyday school life. Concentrated instruction is teachers within their disciplines agreeing on and teaching 3-5 essential standards per semester that will provide students with knowledge and skills that will: be of value beyond a single test date, be of value in multiple disciplines, and will provide students essential knowledge and skills necessary for success in the next grade or level of instruction. Teachers will, of course, teach more than 3-5 topics per semester, but our aim is to ensure that our students have a deep understanding of the essential standards. Convergent assessment is an ongoing process of teachers collectively analyzing targeted evidence to determine the specific learning needs of each student and the effectiveness of our instruction. Teachers will look at assignments, quizzes and tests to determine how well our kids understand the essential standards, they ll reflect on how they taught those standards, and collaborate on re-teaching the essential standards to those students needing more instruction. Certain access is a systematic process that guarantees every student will receive the time and support needed to learn at high levels. The new VFND period, which will fall after the second class period every day, is our commitment to providing that time and support, where teachers and students can focus exclusively on learning essential standards. We will have more information on our new bell schedule, as well as how it synchronizes with the new AISD Career & Tech Center s bell schedule, at our student class schedule pick up during the second week of August. We ll also have the information posted on our website at www.aisd.net/lamar. VikingFest will be on August 30th from 6:00-8:00. Our teams, clubs and organizations will be on full display, and there will be tons of Lamar gear available for purchase, as well as food! It s a great time to see the extra-curricular opportunities Lamar has to offer our kids, and everyone could use more navy, gold and Viking logos in their wardrobe! Please check out our website regularly, and you can also keep up with us on Twitter at @LamarHigh and on Facebook at www.facebook.com/lamarvikingsaisd/, to stay abreast of all that s happening at Lamar. We are looking forward to welcoming our returning students and incoming freshmen, and we re going to have a fantastic 17-18 school year! VFND, Andy Viking Vignette Aug 2017 - Lamar PTA Page 2

The Lamar Band hasn t slowed down all summer! All new and returning band members attended a short camp during the first week of June and then performed in the Arlington July 4 th Independence Day Parade. We are very proud of how well the band and color guard represented Lamar. This was the first performance for the freshmen and a great way to jump right in. We are excited to welcome our new freshman class! The amazing new leadership team has been working hard to welcome and teach our new members. We are very proud of how you are showing your leadership skills and dedication to the band program. Band registration is coming up on August 5 th. At this time, band members will pay fees, try on uniforms and tie up any additional loose ends before school starts. Marching season began July 31 st and our band and color guard has begun learning the music and routines for this year s show. The beginning of school brings with it school work, marching practice, private lessons, football games, pep rallies, fundraisers, and competitions. Before we know it, it ll be time for All-City and All-Region band, jazz band, drumline contests, and marching competitions, including UIL. We are excited to show off our new show and hope you ll come out to watch and support your band! Finally, the Lamar Band Booster Club supports our band students with anything they need to succeed. We hope that every band and color guard family will join the LBBC and help with chaperoning, volunteering, and organizing during the coming school year. You can also help by setting up your Tom Thumb or Kroger grocery store cards to contribute to the band. Our Kroger number is 22022. Also, you can use Smile Amazon and choose the Lamar band as your beneficiary. Thank you for your help! We are looking forward to an exciting 2017-2018 school year!
