From the Commodore A message from Paul our Commodore It gives me great pleasure to welcome you all to this inaugural edition of the new look Newsletter. In so doing, I must firstly thank our past scribe and editor Chas Kimber who did such a sterling job for many years, and secondly, equally thank Mike Robb and Richard Palmer who have nobly volunteered to pick up the mantle. In the process, you will see that they have adopted an entirely new look and feel, with content that is designed to compliment the website. In the oft repeated words of our press officer, Bill Crawford. This is a great club! Wherever you happen to be, have a wonderful summer with fair winds and great sailing. Best wishes, Paul H-A Regatta Update The PISC Summer Regatta was held from the 24th to 26th June, the results are as follows: REGATTA WINNERS and FELICITAS TROPHY WINNERS 1st Richard Peacock, Sharon Kimber 2nd David Brown, Barry Levick 3rd Dave Smith, Chris Ergatides Prizes were also awarded for Laser, Kestrel, Wayfarer and General Handicap winners. From The Editors On behalf of Paphos International Sailing Club, Mike Robb and myself have been elected to continue the excellent work previously carried out by Chas Kimber. This entails the monthly editorial of the club website newsletter, available to all members informing them of topics and events relating to sailing and general activities. It has been a successful first year at the new clubhouse with sailing, ten pin bowling, bbq's and many social events. An influx of new social members has increased the need for new ideas. Mike Robb, an enthusiastic avid experienced sailor and long time member of the club with his wife Carol, is an excellent choice as editor with his wealth of knowledge. I on the other hand, a writer for many years, know little about sailing but with my wife Linda, enjoy the charisma and like to give our full support as social members. Mike and myself feel that although the website is available, this new newsletter available in printed format in the clubhouse will be an asset to members and guests. We would like to thank everyone who has contributed and welcome your views, letters, advertising and ideas. Rich Palmer (Co-Editor) Editor Profile Richard Palmer Rich Palmer retired to Peyia three and a half years ago with his wife Linda having run 'Firkin House', their B & B in Hoylake, Wirral for thirteen years. Prior to that many years were spent in the 'car business' and eleven years in Merseyside Police Force. Rich welcomes his free time to carry out pleasures of playing piano, guitar, mouth organ and the odd song writing. Two years ago he was appointed secretary of Paphos Writers Group, Peyia and is due to publish his first book in the next few weeks. He enjoys meeting people and looks forward to his role of Co-Editor with Mike Robb in producing 'The Main Sheet ' Monthly Mugs! And the Winners Were... April 2016 - Jon Hicks and Paul Johnson May 2016 - Dave Brown and Barry Levick Thursday Sailing at A.G. Mike Robb, Dinghy Secretary, explains the idea behind the Thursday Sailing Programme Several weeks ago John Morren and I decided that we would like to make Thursday sailing at A.G. more interesting and productive. The idea is to have a programme that will mix an element of training and practice together with fun races. So far we have had a Round the Islands race and several pursuit races as well as sailing topics explained by experienced sailors before sailing. A pursuit race lasts for a set time, maybe 40 minutes, and the lower handicap helms start first followed by the quicker sailors. In theory everyone should finish at the same time but of course this doesn t happen! Another objective of this programme is to get novice and newer sailors on the water so that they can practice skills and techniques in a relaxed and enjoyable environment. We have had a tremendous response from our top helms who have been happy to crew for less experienced members. So if you fancy a go, and you don t need to have any experience at all, come on down to A.G. at about 10am on a Thursday or better still email me at piscdrcs@gmail.com before arriving. Yeronisos Island Race See the complete set of photographs on our website www.pisc.com.cy The crews before the race! Optimist Nationals The Cyprus Sailing Federation held the Optimist Nationals from April 23-26 in Limassol, at which the Commodore was a member of the protest committee under the chairmanship of an international judge from Israel. The third day was a blow out in very strong winds, but the large fleet enjoyed competitive racing on the remaining three days. There was only one protest, but the protest committee was kept busy every day judging rule 42. It was great to see so many youngsters having fun on the water. (Rule 42 - Illegal methods of propelling the boat! - Ed.) K.O.A. News Claire Lambert is Chairman of the Kestrel Owners Association and gives some news from the KOA. The Kestrel celebrates its 60th year this year and was the first ever dinghy to be build in GRP! The first 6 Kestrels ever made were of clinker design and we are fortunate enough to have Kestrel number 1 in our safekeeping as a Class Association, she is stored in a barn in deepest Devon at present but soon to be proudly displayed in Hartley Boats Showroom in Derby. This summer we have a full programme of events taking place up and down the UK and our Cyprus Open. Contact editor@kestrel.org.uk or Chairman@kestrel.org.uk for more details. Our own fleet here has grown from two boats in 2010 to in excess of 14, we are still waiting for one to reach our shores from the UK as she has been delayed due to shipping. We have an active Kestrel Owners Association with most owners here being members and this helps to keep the class alive and publicised along with hints tips and good advice from members for members! If you are interested in finding out about the Kestrel come down to the beach and the Kestrel Owners will be delighted to speak with you. Cruising News 20 PISC members and 2 guests took part in this year's Spring Rally organised by Chas Kimber, Offshore Secretary. Most of the Rally goers met up at Athens, Alimos Marina where we rented two charter yachts for the event. Other Club members joined us with two additional yachts. Bob Vart, Lesley and I sailed their Beneteau 41 SUNCATCHER from Orhaniye, Turkey across the Aegean to join the other yachts. We saw two days of Force 7 which allowed us to make great time. We stopped overnight at Symi, Nisyros, Nisos Astipalaia, Nisos Paros and pushed on to Alimos Marina, Athens. All in all, a great trip over 4.5 days. Their crew were Jenny and Ed who had flown in from Australia to take part. Trevor Hutson onboard LUCIFER was at his home base in Poros. His team for the 45 foot Gibsea was Tony Crow, Alan Mansell, Peter Bruce and Carol Richards. They then sailed for Aegina Island, Perdika harbour for the first club party night on the 15th May. Peter A s Beneteau KOS 411 was only two months old and all shiny complete with bow thruster and bells and whistles (so to speak). His crew were Martin and Janet Newlands. The big catamaran Lagoon 450 I was going to skipper was also in great form and the crew were Brian and Joann Layng, Dave and Jan Smith, Gaynor and Sharon Kimber and Jon and Rosemary Garratt. The rally fleet then visited Aegina Island, Perdika harbour, Epidavrou and Poros and several other ports. Teka Nova Completes 10 year Circumnavigation On the 9th May 2016, PISC Club Members Terry Baverstock and Christine Jarvis arrived in Limassol at the end of their amazing ten year circumnavigation of the world in their 62 foot Cutter Rigged Ketch, Teka Nova. Details of this remarkable voyage can be found on the PISC website, www.pisc.com.cy and also on Terry and Christine s website Terry & Christine in Limassol terryandchristine.com. Cruising News Exuma Gal Cruises the Eastern Aegean. By Tony Davenport Paul Hutton Ashkenny, his wife Penny, Paul s brother, Chris, and I spent nearly three weeks on his new yacht Exuma Gal, a Dufour 405 in May this year. Several days were spent in port during which time the boat Exuma Gal in Gocek, Turkey was scrubbed from bow to stern. The next 12 days were spent sailing along the Turkish coast giving her a good shakedown. We visited Ciftlik, Bozuk Baku, Symi (Greece), Bozboron, Ekincyk, Gocek, Sarsala and Fitiyhe on our travels. Chris and I left the boat just after Grandma Penny had arrived from the birth of her granddaughter Isabel. By the end of their trip the boat had travelled over 300 miles and Paul s wallet was dry. There is much to be said for the adage Break Out Another Thousand! Paul commented The wine cellar wasn't as full when we returned :-( and we had many adventures along the way, but gladly nobody got hurt Social News 90 Years Young - The Queen s 90th Birthday. Report by Liz Unwin, Court Correspondent. Tuesday 7th June saw a full house gathered to greet the arrival of Her Majesty the Queen and His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh (aka Marissa and Bill). Amidst much clapping, cheering and clinking of glasses the esteemed couple made their stately way (stopping for a few selfies that needed to be taken with some of their loyal subjects) A magnificent selection of sandwiches, scones with jam and cream and cakes awaited the party-goers, prepared by Jacqui Biggs and her team of ladies in the kitchen. Musical entertainment was provided by Trina and involved lots of audience participation, culminating in much flag-waving and lusty vocalising of all the well known songs White Cliffs of Dover, Jerusalem and inevitably, Rule Britannia! Social Secretary Chris Hall is to be congratulated on such a successful event her first as Social Secretary. Social News PISC Summer Ball at the Kamares Club On Saturday 11th June about 80 PISC members and their guests, had a splendid evening of entertainment, food, wine and very good company until "carriages called" at about midnight. The ladies in their finery looked very elegant, - their partners paying them the compliment in their own smart dress ( being well scrubbed!) The evening went with a swing led by Marisa Williams whose singing and choice of music kept the dance floor busy. More fun was had by light hearted competitions to vote for the sexiest/ most elegantly dressed woman and men present. Much hilarity was evident with each of the three male finalists hamming it up until the lady winner selected from them blindfolded. Your matching bow ties and hankies, still made my evening Mr(s) Mantz and Hodnett. An evening to remember, role on next year! Look at the photos of this event (and others) on our club website. Chris Hall, Social Secretary See the complete set of photographs on our website www.pisc.com.cy Tuesday Evenings at The Clubhouse The regular Tuesday evenings at the clubhouse now include a series of special events and the second of these attracted a big audience on the 14th June. We were privileged to welcome Professor Joan Connelly from New York University. Joan has been coming to Cyprus every year for about 25 years, to dig for historic artefacts on Yeronisos Island and to interpret their findings significance to life there both BC and AD. Joan gave us a fascinating talk on these discoveries, illustrated with slides and laced with humour. Then, with her students, and having warned us they expected a song from us, they tunefully rendered an appropriate ditty to much acclaim from their appreciative audience. Led by a bold member we did not let our Club down, replying with gusto "We do like to be beside the seaside...". Much laughter and mutual appreciation. Rounding off the evening with burgers and chips washed down with Budweiser gave our visitors a feeling of home! Enjoyed by all. We look forward to the next special visitor event on a Tuesday. Keep your eyes open for that information. Draw Winner! Allen Barrow was the lucky winner of the Club Draw on Tuesday 14th June. P.I.S.C. 30 Agiou Georgiou Avenue, Pegeia, Pafos 8560, Cyprus Page 6

Training News Courses Recently Completed Congratulations to Mike Robb, Dave Brown and Chris Cuthbert all of who successfully completed the three days Assistant Instructors course in May. Their addition to the instructor cadre is very welcomed and I wish them luck in the future. Four members completed the Rescue Boat Crew course. Congratulations to Dave Richards, Paul Johnson, Sheila Godfrey, Dimitrios Kotsis. The first Instructor Single Handler course was held on 30th May as preparation for teaching TLC students. John Lay, Chris Cuthbert and Dave Brown got to grips with the Pico and practiced various manoeuvres. The course also provided an opportunity for Safety Coxwains John Tremain, Pete Bagshaw and Dave Fraser to practice some specific rescue techniques associated with Pico s and students as preparation for potential eventualities they may face during the youth sail training. Courses Scheduled in June Basic Dinghy Sailing course scheduled for 13th 17th June to which four members have signed up to attend. Twelve members are due to attend the Emergency First aid at Work course scheduled for 14th June. Youth Sail Training Project Youth Sail Training Project Update (TLC) by Phil Mutton Training Officer Your donations have been put to good use with 4 Pico s purchased from UK now positioned at AG. Work is underway on all the background formalities that must be completed before students can be trained. Selected volunteers have applied for Clear Criminal Record Certificates from the Police, Welfare Officers have been appointed, Child Protection Policies have been written, training of volunteers has commenced and so the list goes on. With 4 of the 6 boats now in position we have been looking for a further two boats to purchase subject to funding being available. Kit Whitehouse may have come to the rescue by purchasing an old Pico that is in need of some renovation to bring it to a seaworthy condition and if that is achieved Kit has stated his intention to donate it to the project. We look forward to formally receiving it in time for the project start date. So potentially just one more boat required and now that TLC has started its fund raising there is every possibility we will be able to purchase one boat plus covers, buoyancy aids, helmets and various other essential assets. Subject to availability The Picos being tested Pico rigged and ready to go of the above the project proposed start date for training of the 16 and 17 years old students is 8th September 2016. ESSC has given us a scrap Pico hull to use as a land trainer. It will need some adaption and a turntable made to get the best effect when teaching tack and gybe drills but will avoid having to use a good boat for such training. If you have some spare time and are prepared to help get this prepared then please contact Phil Mutton or Chris Cuthbert. P.I.S.C. 30 Agiou Georgiou Avenue, Pegeia, Pafos 8560, Cyprus Page 7

Club Merchandise Dorothy Govaerts takes over as Merchandise Officer by a Staff Reporter! Our new Merchandise Officer Dorothy Govaerts took over from Brigitte Davenport following the Club AGM in April this year. Brigitte built up an excellent range of clothing whilst in office and our thanks go to her for her hard work. Dorothy told our reporter After a long standing experience of 27 years in fashion, I never thought I would be back in business here in Cyprus! I am planning to introduce some new items embroidered with the well known PISC logo. Having spoken to a few female club members, it appears there is a distinct demand for 100% cotton in various styles. New lines could also include a PISC towel and a PISC windbreaker. Dorothy also spotted some fleeces, lightweight jackets, aprons and tabards for officers. The "shop" will be opened on Fridays from 12 am until 3 pm. She will regularly visit AG harbour on Saturday for those that don't have the occasion to come to the clubhouse or you can always contact her on her mobile 996 50 145 or by email dorothy.govaerts@gmail.com. Membership Brian Parker, Membership Secretary explains the Temporary Membership arrangements at P.I.S.C. The club offers temporary membership to visitors for a period of 4 weeks at a cost of 10.00. This is for: Members and family of other sailing clubs from Cyprus or abroad. Family or friends of existing members. Long-standing friends of PISC. The offer is NOT intended for tourists/holidaymakers, irrespective of their sailing abilities. Temporary membership allows access to the clubhouse facilities and social events. Temporary members may be invited to crew for full members in their private or club boats, as circumstances permit. Due to the unique sailing conditions at Agios Georgios, the helming of boats by temporary members may be possible only in special circumstances. Please note: We do not hire out boats to visitors or temporary members. Alternatively members may introduce guests for a maximum of 4 visits per annum. Guests may not visit the clubhouse unless accompanied by the member. Those wishing to apply for temporary membership should contact any Committee member who will be happy to attend to your request.
