SAILING ASSOCIATION OF MARCO ISLAND P. O. BOX 61, MARCO ISLAND, FL 34146 www.samisailor.org March 2017 COMMODORE S CABIN Ken Bardon, Commodore ADVICE FROM THE VICE Micki Gobeil, Vice Commodore February was another good month. A well attended meeting with presentations by Lorelei Diamond and Lil Bardon on "living aboard without having to make your partner walk the plank". Later in the month, SAMI members were invited to participate in the Blessing of the Fleet sponsored by the Marco Island Yacht Club. Two SAMI boats participated, Lady M with Gilles and Micki Gobeil, along with Moonbeam with me and Lil. Both boats had lots of SAMI members along for the Blessing. Bob Diamond is continuing to promote joint cruising activities with the various SW Florida clubs. Rob Reiley, our Fleet Captain, is doing the same for the various regattas. Joint participation in these events bring more boats and members and make each activity more fun for all. I hope to see you all at the March 9th meeting in Capri. In This Issue. We are so glad we participated in this traditional maritime ceremony and glad to see it has been introduced to the boaters here on Marco Island. Commodore Lois Dixon, the Bridge, and Staff at Marco Island Yacht Club and Marina are to be commended for the outstanding job they did in the planning, organizing and orchestration of this event and introducing this tradition to our boaters. By 10:30 the participating boats that had been circling around in the river near the base of the Jolly Bridge began to fall into their assigned positions. At 11:00 am, as planned, the ceremony began with the Pledge Of Allegiance to the American flag. Then the band began to play as everyone on shore and on board joined in to sing the National Anthem, followed by the Blessing. The cannon was fired and the vessels began to move forward with a 100 yard separation so each vessel would have the opportunity to be acknowledged, the Captain introduced, the name of the vessel and the names of the crew and special guests on board. In the background, the band played John Phillip Sousa marches for each branch of the Military Service for those on board who had served. In our crew, we had two Army veterans, Don Mills and Peter Coggins. Lady M had 10 crew members on board, each one having an assigned position. Gilles Gobeil, Captain, at the helm. Micki Gobeil, Vice Commodore, VHF Radio Communications. Peter Coggins, Rear Commodore, and Paul Tateo, Casting off and Docking Vessel. Don Mills, Past Commodore, 1983-1984, and Henry Salisbury, Point Men, maintained the 100 yard separation. Wendy Coggins, Safety (continued on page 3)

CRUISIN ABOUT Peter Coggins, Rear Commodore AROUND THE BUOYS Rob Reiley, Fleet Captain I am happy to be able to say that I am making good progress with understanding my job requirements and responsibilities as your SAMI Rear Commodore. We in Marco are blessed with fabulous weather and very interesting cruising venues. To be able to better serve you folks I am planning to contact each of you to allow me to know more about your cruising interests what you really enjoy doing be it group participation or solo sailing and what you really do NOT enjoy doing and have little or no interest in participating. SAMI did send out a survey recently that was an initial attempt at collecting this kind of information. But I will now be doing one-on-one personal communication with you, starting immediately. For your information, I will be presenting a narrated slide show at our next SAMI Membership Meeting on 9 March at the Capri Community Center. This will be an account of our cruise in Maine with The Corinthians a sort of virtual yacht club of 250 or more sailors and power boaters from the Chesapeake to the far reaches of Maine. On the even years we cruise a different region of Maine. This time a fleet of 45 boats from the Chesapeake to Maine gathered in Booth Bay and participated in a very wellplanned and organized 7-day cruise (with some racing) to Maple Juice Cove (in the St. George River), Rockport, Carver Cove (at the far end of the Fox Islands Thorofare), Dark Harbor (on Seven Hundred Acre Island), Tenants Harbor, Christmas Cove, and back to Booth Bay. This cruise had beautiful winds and weather well we did have one very challenging day! More on that when we see you at the meeting on the 9 th! Don t forget, our next cruise is a SAMI- hosted event a Cruise to Everglades City on 24-25 March! I will post some appropriate information on the marina dockage opportunities and shore-side activities VERY shortly. 2016 Audit Report SAMI Members: I have completed an audit of the SAMI books for 2016 and found them to be in order. The account is in balance and all expenses are properly documented. Balance at the end of 2016 was $5,626.66. Respectfully Submitted, Rob Reiley The Bud Light Regatta is shaping up to be a funfilled weekend! We have an international judge, Irene McNeill, for the event. She has graciously offered to host a seminar on racing rules/management. This will be held at 1:00 pm on Friday, April 7 th, at the Yacht Club. The Yacht Club will welcome us to dine with them, off of the menu, for lunch at noon. All are welcome to attend the Captains Meeting on Friday evening at 18:00. It will be held on the pool deck at the Yacht Club and FREE Bud Light will be served. The actual Bud Light race will be held off of the Marco Island Marriott on Saturday, April 8 th at 10:00. This is a BOTY event. Following the race the Yacht Club will host a Margarita themed dinner at 18:00. There will be music, a Margarita special, and several entrees to choose from. Captains are admitted free and guests are $25.00 per person. We are encouraging ALL SAILORS to participate in the fun race starting on Sunday at 10:00. This will be a pursuit race, so there is no scary start to deal with. It should be a fun day on the water. The weekend will conclude Sunday evening with dinner and awards at the Old Marco Lodge. We will order off of the menu and FREE Bud Light will be served. Cocktails at 17:30 and the ceremonies start at 19:00. The Ladies Day Race will be held on Saturday, April 22 nd. We want to see all of our female Captains out on the water for a day of camaraderie and fun. A post race party will be held at the Yacht Club. A flyer will be sent out shortly. Other Upcoming Regattas SAMI racers are invited to participate in the following local regattas: GCSC Towers Race March 11-12, 2017 GCSC AVOW Hospice Cup March 18-19, 2017 If you are interested in participating in a Southwest Florida regatta as a registered competitor, or as a crew member, contact me at 239-389-0057 for more information. 2

SPOTLIGHT on JAE KELLOGG Who knew that we had a celebrity in our midst?! At the Everglades City Cruise last fall, I learned about the following from Patrick Kellogg (Jae is too unassuming to tell anyone this). Doing a little more searching on my own, I found the following on the Purdue University website and wanted to share it with all of you. Also, you may be interested to know that the Purduette s will be performing on Marco Island on March 13 at 7:00 pm at the United Church of Marco Island. Purduette 75th Anniversary Legacy Fund in honor of Jae Israel-Kellogg The Purduette 75 th Anniversary Legacy Fund honors Jae Israel-Kellogg due to her decades of service and leadership of the Purduettes and for Purdue Musical Organizations (PMO) as a whole. For 25 years, Jae served as Director, Assistant Director, Musical Accompanist, Arranger, and Mentor for not only the Purduettes, but for many other musical ensembles including the Purdue Varsity Glee Club, University Choir, PMO Express, Choral Club, and the Purdue Indiana Extension Music Program. Jae s influence can still be felt in several musical selections in the Purduettes current repertoire, and her legacy lives on to continually enrich and benefit the lives of current PMO students. Not only was Jae a fundamental leader in developing the Purduettes into the premier vocal ensemble that it is today, but she was also an avid supporter of PMO and a champion for enriching the students educational experience. Throughout her tenure, Jae had the opportunity to travel with many different PMO ensembles including the 1999 international tour to Australia, Fiji, and New Zealand with the Glee Club and members of the Purduettes, University Choir, PMO Express, and the Black Cultural Center s Black Voices of Inspiration. During Jae s 25 years at PMO, she embodied the favorite adage, no fun without music, no music without fun, and truly left an impact on the Purduettes. CONGRATULATIONS JAE!! ADVICE FROM THE VICE (continued from page one) and over all Watch Person. Dawn Snyder, Doreen Hertel and Debra Kimack, Photographers. We could not have chosen a more alert, enthusiastic, enjoyable crew and they have all signed on again for next year. We are all hopeful that The Blessing of the Fleet will become a life long Tradition for the boaters of Marco Island to participate in and be Blessed by. The next SAMI Membership/Dinner Meeting will be on Thursday, March 9th, at 6:00 pm at the Isles Of Capri Community Center. The Topic will be CRUISING and the guest speaker is our Rear Commodore Peter Coggins. The theme for dinner is Italian; the menu will include Lasagna, Caesar Salad, Pasta Salad, and Italian Bread, with Tiramisu, Cannolli's, Chocolate Brownies and cookies for dessert. So PLEASE RSVP EARLY and SIGN UP for the dish you will bring so we will know how many to prepare for and be sure we do not all bring the same dish! Also, please remember to bring your own utensils, plates, cups, and napkins. RSVP by March 4th at 642-4241 or e-mail mickigo@embarq mail.com. 3 SAMI Membership Meeting Thursday, March 9, 2017 Isles of Capri Community Center Italian Night 6:00 PM Cocktails 6:30 PM Dinner Speaker: Rear Commodore Peter Coggins The Corinthians Annual Cruise in Maine RSVP to Micki by March 4 642-4241 or mickigo@embarqmail.com
