Myrick February 8, 2012 I would like to thank everyone that called to check on me while I was sick. This was the first time that I can remember missing a local ski trip because of illness. I am happy to report that I have fully recovered from the bad cold that I had and I am looking forward to this Saturday s trip to Seven Springs. I hated to miss the Holiday Valley trip but I am pleased to know that the trip was well attended and that everyone had a great time. I would like to thank Pat Stinson and her grandchildren for agreeing to be the annual captains of this trip. A special thanks to Pat s grandson Chris Carson who took some time off from his studies at The Ohio State University to help his grandmother and sisters captain this trip. (Continue, page 4)

...(COVER, LETTER FROM PRESIDENT) A big thank you to Marcia, Erika and Ebony Hood on the very fine job that they did as captains of our annual Family & Friends trip to Peek N Peak on January 7. Marcia, Erika and Ebony have started planning for next years Family & Friends Peek N Peak trip. They are planing to make next years trip a weekend trip, which will enable our new and not so new skiers to have two full days of skiing. STAY FIT, STAY HEALTHY! Former club member, Marcia Watson has been an active participant with the Team Marathon running club. If you recall, they have visited our club to promote weekly running/walking. Recently, a number of Esprit members have joined with Team Marathon and Black Girls Run, in an effort to stay fit and stay healthy. Please read about these awesome running groups and consider joining fellow members. Both groups train year round. TEAM MARATHON GROUP PHOTO February 14, 2012 is the date of our next executive board and general body meetings, which will be held at the Shaker Heights Library. The executive board meeting is from 5:00PM-6: 15PM and general body meeting is from 6:30PM-8: 30PM. I look forward to seeing everyone this Saturday at 5:00AM on the Seven Springs bus or Tuesday at either the executive board or general body meetings. Sincerely, Chuck Myrick The problems in life come when we re sowing one thing and expecting to reap something entirely different. Team Marathon has been running together in the greater Cleveland area since 1982. Our philosophy is to promote and encourage running and walking, with support to health and fitness of all sports for healthy lifestyles. Our objectives include providing a forum for education and a fraternity for runners, walkers, members and the running public. Our goal is to foster physical education through running and goal seeking skills for children aged 12-17, with a special focus on urban adolescents. www.teammarathon.org By Stephen R. Covey Black girls run? Of course we do. In 2009, Toni Carey and Ashley Hicks created Black Girls RUN! in an effort to tackle the growing obesity epidemic in the African-American community and provide encouragement and resources to both new and veteran runners. The mission of Black Girls RUN! is to encourage African-American women to make fitness and healthy living a priority. According to the Centers for Disease Control, 80% of African-American women are overweight. BGR! wants to create a movement to lower that percentage and subsequently, lower the number of women with chronic diseases associated with an unhealthy diet and sedentary lifestyle. www.blackgirlsrun.com

Slavery by Another Name Official Selection of the 2012 Sundance Film Festival premieres on PBS,Monday, February 13, 2012 at 9pm ET / 8pm CT (check local listings) Slavery by Another Name is a 90-minute documentary that challenges one of Americans most cherished assumptions: the belief that slavery in this country ended with the Emancipation Proclamation. The Sunday film tells how even as chattel slavery came to an end in the South in 1865, thousands of African Americans were pulled back into forced labor with shocking force and brutality. It was a system in which men, often guilty of no crime at all, were arrested, compelled to work without pay, repeatedly bought and sold, and coerced to do the bidding of masters. Tolerated by both the North and South, forced labor lasted well into the 20th century. For most Americans this is entirely new history. Slavery by Another Name gives voice to the largely forgotten victims and perpetrators of forced labor and features their descendants living today.
