RED BELT YOUR GRADING DATE IS: - -

INTRODUCTION TO YOUR GRADING Well done you have earned enough tip stripes to grade! With multiple schools in the area Ares Combat operates a policy of rotating the grading locations across all the schools to ensure that no single school is favoured. Now you are ready to progress to your Red belt, you have worked hard during this period and hopefully learnt lots of new and exciting skills. So lets put them to the test and see how much you have remembered. Once you have registered you will be split into sections. Each section will have a directing staff assigned to them, this is your liaison should you have any questions about grading or simply need advice. Directing staff can be identified by either a red t shirt or a full red uniform. Each section will rotate round the three sections of a grading Discipline Fitness Combat As you progress through the belts at Ares the emphasis will shift from one aspect of the grading to another, so for example at present a lot of emphasis is placed to physical fitness as we need to get you to a good level of fitness before you move on to Phase 2. But as you progress higher the emphasis will shift towards Discipline for Phase 2 and then Combat once you are in Phase 3. This is not to say that the other sections are not important, but at your currently level you are able to enhance your results by scoring highly in the fitness sections. Soon this will stop and you will be expected to do equally well across all three sections. A note to all students on failure Throughout our lives we are taught that failure is a bad thing, this is an idea you need to rid yourself of. We only truly learn once we have failed at something. If you fail your grading, do not leave disheartened just think to yourself great, now I know where I am good and where I am weak. Now I can train even harder and next time I will not only pass I will pass with a Higher Grade so I can have a Black stripe on my belt! Parents it is important that children learn to fail, it is also important that as parents we do not chastise them or project our own disappointment on to them, they will in time learn that failure is the greatest tool for progression that a person can possess.

INTRODUCTION TO YOUR GRADING Understanding the grading and the belts at Ares We all know that each student is an individual and as such they should be allowed to progress at their own rate, not forced to move forward when they aren t ready or held back because other students aren t ready. So here at Ares we have a unique grading structure that allows for a much more independent progression for each student. Failure and dealing with failing the grading At the end of grading those students who did not meet the required standard will be spoken to as a group so that no one is singled out as a failure. We will explain to them that failure is a great learning tool and that everyone fails sometimes. Each student will then be able to review their scorecards and work out where they struggled so that they can increase their focus for next time. First Degree Pass Pass Students who have shown a good level of skill and passed at least two out of the three sections will be awarded their first degree belt. This means they still need to show a lot of focus in class and prove to the instructors that they deserve their new belt. Students who have passed two or more of their sections and achieved over 80% in total will be rewarded with a full pass. This means they are of a slightly higher standard than their first degree counter parts and as such they will be allowed to do more detailed training in the class from now on. Higher Degree Pass Students who manage to pass all three sections of their grading to an exceptionally high standard (+90%) will be rewarded with a higher degree pass, this singles them out as someone who has achieved an extremely difficult level of skill in the grading and as such on their following grading they will not be able to fail, the lowest level they can achieve is First Degree pass.

ARES COMBAT DISCIPLINE

DISCIPLINE THE SYSTEM Discipline You are no longer graded according to how many points you score. You will simply receive either a pass or fail from the examiner. Siu Nim Tao Siu Nim Tao is the most important and the most difficult form in Wing Chun Kung Fu, as dedicated students you should already be practising this form at home as well as in class. During your grading you will be able to perform Siu Nim Tao once as a group and then you will be expected to stand on your own and perform it without any instruction what so ever. You will no longer get points for each section, you must show you can perform the entire Siu Nim Tao slowly and confidently. The examiner will be looking to see not only can you remember Siu Nim Tao but that you can show good control and keep all the shapes on the centre. Lat Sao Lat Sao is a simple enough drill that you will have practised a lot in class, during grading we are looking to see that you understand the exercise and maintain your form. Nok Sao Nok Sao is a variation on the Lat Sao drill and you will have practised it during class. During Grading the most important thing is not to rush the Nok Sao try to do it to a high quality rather than fast. Shape & Punch The Shape & Punch drills are a variation of Nok Sao designed to allow a student to practise alone. The Drills should be practised and performed calmly and not rushed. Belt Tying Students must demonstrate they can tie their own belt without any assistance, they will be given 3 separate attempts to complete this task.

ARES COMBAT COMBAT TRAINING

COMBAT ARES COMBAT TRAINING THE SYSTEM Combat Training - As part of Phase Two you are expected to show that you can use Wing Chun to close the COMBAT gap and take control of your opponent s centre. Padwork A senior student will work with you holding a pair of focus mitts for you, you must then show how you can deliver the correct punches when the senior student calls them out. They will also randomly TRAINING throw strikes with the pads you must either slip them or duck them. Defending Punches Now the senior student will be wearing a pair of gloves and they will try and punch you in the head. It is your job to defend them with the techniques you have learned. Defending Grabs Your senior student will now grab your uniform and you must quickly and successfully control them using the restraints you have been shown. Defending a Push A senior student will now push you with a single hand, you will be expected to use the techniques you have learned in class to demonstrate your skill and deal with a forceful push. Defending a Headlock A senior student will now put you in a headlock, once again you must demonstrate that you have learned what has been taught by dealing with a real headlock. Defending a Kick Your senior student will now grab your uniform and you must quickly and successfully control them using the restraints you have been shown.

DISCIPLINE POINTS SYSTEM Defending a Throw A senior student will now attempt to throw you, you will be expected to use the techniques you have learned in class to demonstrate your skill and deal with a throw, if you are thrown you will be expected to show good form when falling to prevent injury. Sparring Your senior student will now put on a head guard and a gum shield, as will you. You will touch gloves and then spar for 2x 1 minute rounds with a 30 second break in between. You will also be expected to spar for 1 minute with each Phase 2 student.
