Will the Barnstormer Biplane Fly Again? By Dave West Most of you know of the Barnstormer Biplane. It's the club "mascot" that's been hanging in the Bloomingdale Library for well over 20 years. It was designed and built by Ron Hilger and a group of members as a club project all those years ago. However, you may not know that before it became a display model it was actually flown (making it a true airplane). Since we've moved our meetings to the Itasca Library the Barnstormer Biplane has been removed from its long-time perch. What now? Ron suggested that we fly it. Fly it?!! Is that even possible? Is it structurally sound? What about the ancient glue joints, dusty covering, the hinges? The prop doesn't turn at all -- does it have an engine? A quick overview shows it to be in remarkably good shape. Although it has been stripped of its servos and receiver, it still has its original K&B Sportster.45 engine (albeit totally gummed up). Perhaps all the plane needs is a good cleaning, an engine rebuild, and a radio dropped into it. I've started the disassembly and cleanup. The goal is to get it back together and ready to fly for the club Fun-Fly event on May 15th. Will the Barnstormer Biplane fly again? Come out on the 15th and see for yourself!
